Mrs. Florence Womble
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Florence Evie York Womble, 93, of 803 E. Davis St., died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after one year of failing health, one week critical. A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Joseph Ervin Womble, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Francis York and Mrs. Mary Ann Capps York, both deceased. She was retired from Baker-Cammack Hosiery. She was a charter member of the Burlington Assembly of God, where she was a member of the Golden Touch. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Geraldine Tickle of Melbourne, Fla., and Mrs. Letha Mae Clapp of Burlington; a son, Mr. Joseph E. 'Buck' Womble of Burlington; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Burlington Assembly of God by Dr. Howard Thompson, pastor, and the Rev. Benjamin Howard. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Rev. James Donnell
BURLINGTON - The Rev. James Thomas 'Buck' Donnell, 77, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Born Jan. 28, 1921, in Lebanon, Tenn., he was the husband of Mrs. L'Wanna Wammack Donnell, who survives, and the son of Mr. William Robert Donnell and Mrs. Dora Jackson Donnell, both deceased. He was an ordained Presbyterian Church (USA) minister for 52 years. He recently served as Honorably Retired of New Hope Presbytery. He received his education at Cumberland University and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. He served Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Mebane, Eno Presbyterian Church in Cedar Grove, Fairfield Presbyterian Church in Efland and Oakland Presbyterian Churches at Cleveland Schools, from which he retired. He also served two churches in Texas. Survivors other than his wife of Burlington include two sons, Mr. Ed Donnell of Roxboro and Mr. Bob Donnell of Graham; a daughter, Mrs. Bill (Becky Donnell) Wood of Henderson; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Crossroads Presbyterian Church. A private family burial will be in the Crossroads Cemetery. The family will be at the church following the service. Mrs. Katarina Pieritz
BURGTHAN, Germany - Mrs. Katarina G. Pieritz, 73, died at 12:50 p.m. Friday, June 12, 1998, at her home after a long illness. A native of Zagreb, Croatia, she was the wife of Mr. Hans Pieritz Sr., who survives. Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Renata P. Wall of Gibsonville, and Mrs. Nevenka Buttkereit of Dusseldorf, Germany; a son, Mr. Hans Pieritz Jr. of Burgthan; and five grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Burgthan. AIKEN, S.C. - Mr. Henry Cheeley Jr., 63, of 194 Summers Ave., died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Kentwood Nursing Home in Augusta, Ga., after a long illness. A native of Warrenton, Ga., he was the son of Mr. Henry Cheeley Sr. and Mrs. Ollie Kendrick Cheeley, both deceased. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Kim Cheeley of New York City; a son, Mr. Kevin Cheeley of Atlanta; four stepchildren; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Felton Crump of Burlington; a brother, Mr. James Cheeley of Burlington; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Henry Richmond. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home in Burlington by the Rev. BURLINGTON - Mrs. Kathryn Sawyer Braden, 73, of 1613 N.W. 11th Ave., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, in Ft. Lauderdale. A native of Edenton, she was the wife of Mr. Verne 'Skip' Braden, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Miles Sawyer and Mrs. Nora Catherine Sawyer, both deceased. She was co-owner of The Engraving Place in Ft. Lauderdale. She was a member of Motor Maids and the Gold Wing Riders Association. Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Mrs. John E. (Cheryl) Walker Jr. of Gibsonville and Mrs. Carole H. Cox of Ft. Lauderdale; a son, Mr. Joel 'Jay' J. Huffman of Margate, Fla.; a brother, Mr. John Sawyer of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Irene S. Wallace and Mrs. Madolyn S. Grubb, both of Burlington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Luena Diane Huffman; four brothers, Mr. Ted Sawyer, Mr. Mike Sawyer, Mr. Frank Sawyer and Mr. Edward Sawyer; and two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle S. Miller and Ms. Lillian Gray Sawyer. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Brookwood Baptist Church by Dr. Garry Baldwin, pastor. CONOVER - Mrs. Colleen Travis Brooks, 75, of 3607 Puett Park Drive, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Abernethy Center in Newton. Born Jan. 9, 1923, in Catawba County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Bruce Alexander Brooks, and the daughter of Mr. James Washington Travis and Mrs. Carrie Whitener Travis, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith United Church of Christ in Brookford. Survivors include four sisters, Ms. Ruth Travis Hollar, Ms. Blanche Travis Winstead, Ms. Janelle 'Susie' Travis Drum and Ms. Doris Travis Sigmon, all of Hickory; and a brother, Mr. Henry Fred Travis of Hickory. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Clarence Vernon Travis and Mr. Ted Wes Travis; and two sisters, Ms. Irene Travis Adams and Ms. Nettie Travis Conklin. BURLINGTON - Mr. William Elguy 'Bill' White, 76, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, two days critical. A native of Surry County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Ida Alene Yarbrough White, and the son of Mr. Gilbert L. White and Mrs. Minnie Davis White, both deceased. He was a former salesman with Southland Insurance Company and formerly worked for Roche BioMedical. He attended Wicker Street Baptist Church. Survivors include four sons, Mr. William Glenn White, Mr. Garrette Elguy White, Mr. Harold Gene White and Mr. Ronald Lee White, all of Burlington; five sisters, Mrs. Mattie Mae Durham and Mrs. Lorene Holyfield, both of Dobson, Mrs. Ola Parks of La France, S.C., Mrs. Mary Ann Todd of Elkin and Mrs. Inez McDaniel of Burlington; three brothers, Mr. Adam White of Dobson, Mr. Herbert White of Elkin and Mr. Gilbert L. GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Maggie Boone Coltrane, 96, of 725 Forest Drive, died at 4:15 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Alamance Health Care Center. A native of Sampson County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Percy R. Coltrane, and the daughter of Mr. William Ralph Boone and Mrs. Lillie Simmons Boone, both deceased. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Gibsonville Evangelical Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class and the Ladies Missionary Group. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Younger of Gibsonville; a son, Mr. Paul Coltrane of Gibsonville; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Irene Moore; a son, Mr. Thomas G. Coltrane; two sisters, Ms. Mary Lilly Waters and Ms. Ida Lee; four brothers, Mr. Charlie W. Boone, Mr. Howard T. Boone, Mr. Edgar Boone and Mr. Horace Boone; and two grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Gibsonville Evangelical Methodist Church by the Rev. DURHAM - Mr. Charlie Revels, 85, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, in Durham. Born Feb. 15, 1913, in Faison, he was the husband of Mrs. Alice B. Revels who survives, and the son of Mr. William Revels and Mrs. Florence Revels, both deceased. Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. James Arthur Royal of Oxen Hill, Md.; and four daughters, Ms. Edna Chavis of Cedar Grove, Mrs. Ellen Ruffin of the home and Ms. Carolyn Bryant and Ms. Charlotte Revels, both of Durham. Rev. Garnett L. Walker
DANVILLE, Va. - The Rev. Garnett L. Walker, 77, of 339 Slaughter Ave., died early Saturday morning, June 13, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center, where he had lived for the past 10 days. He had been in failing health for 10 years. Born Sept. 6, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the husband of Mrs. Patsy Lee Payne Walker who survives, and the son of Mr. William Lewis Walker and Mrs. Daisy Mae Hanks Walker, both deceased. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He had spent most of his life in Danville and in North Carolina where he was a retired minister. He attended the Lighthouse Independent Methodist Church. Survivors other than his wife of the home include one son, Mr. Ronnie Lee Walker of Greensboro; one daughter, Ms. Starlett W. Warrenn of Pleasant Grove; one brother, Mr. Charlie S. Walker of Danville; and two sisters, Ms. Louise W. Walker and Ms. Annie W. Kelly, both of Danville. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. W.L. Wade. Burial will be in the Payne Family cemetery at Dry Fork. BURLINGTON - Mr. Maurice Eugene Bruce of 429 Hyde St., died Friday, June 12, 1998, at Raleigh Community Hospital. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, he was the husband of Mrs. Arlethia Laverne Evans Bruce, who survives, and the son of Mr. Lonnie Bruce and Mrs. Wilma Parrish Bruce, who survive. He was a route sales manager with UniFirst in Graham. Survivors other than his wife and his parents include two sons, Mr. Maurice Eugene Bruce II of Burlington and Mr. Marcus Bruce of Des Moines; one daughter, Ms. Kesha Bruce of New York; three brothers, Mr. Carlton Bruce of Columbia, S.C., Mr. Michael Bruce of Winterhaven, Calif. and Mr. Brian Bruce of Atlanta; four sisters, Mrs. Gay Lynn Roach of Biloxi, Miss., Ms. Theresa Bruce and Mrs. Lynette Bruce, both of Des Moines, and Mrs. LaChelle Thigpen of Columbus, Ohio.
