Mr. Thomas Dougherty
ELON COLLEGE - Mr. Thomas Joseph Dougherty, 68, of 115 Forestview Drive, died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after an illness of nine months.
A native of Jersey City, N.J., he was the husband of Mrs. Lois Gardner Dougherty, who survives, and the son of Mr. Joseph Francis Dougherty and Mrs. Helen Eliese Best Dougherty, both deceased. He was retired from Lucent Technologies and retired from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. William W. (Helen) White of Bel Air, Md.; a son, Mr. Michael S. Dougherty of Orlando, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lakeside Memorial Garden in Angier by the Rev. Henry Lee, pastor of Angier Memorial United Methodist Church.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Joann Marie Key, 45, of 411 Hamilton St., died at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, two months critical.A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Jerry Arvil Key, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Kenneth Walter Davis and Ms. Carrie Lee Overman, both deceased. She was a homemaker. Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Ms. Wendy Hall and Ms. Sandra Clark, both of Burlington; a son, Mr. Joey Key of Graham; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Dawn Euliss of Kimesville; a stepson, Mr. Jerry Timothy Key of Burlington; and four sisters, Mrs. Linda Newbold of Florida, Ms. Patricia Hartley and Miss Doris Davis, both of Burlington, and Ms. Barbara Day of Graham; a brother, Mr. Danny Davis of Haw River; two grandchildren; and one step grandchild. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Eugene Webb. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park. Mrs. Virginia G. Welch
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Virginia Griffin Welch, 90, of Rehabilitation and Health Care Center of Alamance in Graham, died at 3:05 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at her home after four years of failing health. She was a former resident of Shadylawn Drive. A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William Tippitt Welch, and the daughter of Mr. Seburn 'Dock' Hatch Griffin and Mrs. Sarah McPherson Griffin, both deceased. She was a retired supervisor at Glen Raven Finishing Plant with more than 28 years of service.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Norine Aderhold of Bassett, Va. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Lula Dixon and Mrs. Blanche McPherson; and three brothers, Mr. George Griffin, Mr. Prince Griffin and Mr. Fred Griffin. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Pine Hill cemetery by the Rev. Howard Spray, pastor of Pleasant Hill Christian Church. The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening.

ROXBORO - Mr. Paul Wadell Conner Sr., 63, of 747 Oak Grove Church Road, died Tuesday evening, June 23, 1998, at Person County Memorial Hospital. A native of Halifax County, Va., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Meredith Delorse Jackson Conner, and the son of Mr. Wadell Conner and Mrs. Bertha Briggs Conner, both deceased. He was retired from the city of Roxboro and served in the National Guard from 1958 to 1961. He was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Debra Conner Underwood of Roxboro and Ms. Joni Conner Belcher of Sutherlin, Va.; two sons, Mr. Paul W. Conner Jr., of Roxboro and Mr. Wendell Conner of Sanford; three sisters, Ms. Ruth C. Reaves and Ms. Maude Reaves, both of Roxboro, and Ms. Patty Bowen of Burlington; five brothers, Mr. Bobby Conner, Mr. Henry Conner and Mr. Ernest Conner, all of Burlington, Mr. Wade Conner of Marion, S.C., and Mr. Joseph Conner of Roxboro; two half brothers, Mr. Walter Shotwell of Burlington and Mr. Hubert Shotwell of Louisiana; and six grandchildren. EFLAND - Mrs. Hazel Jeanette Reid Johnson, 72, of 4101 W. Ten Highway, died at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Born Nov. 8, 1925, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of Mr. Henry Burton Reid and Mrs. Daisy Belle Stowe Reid, both deceased. She was a retired employee of AT&T and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Jeanette Hazel Ross of Durham, Mrs. Barbara Ann Williams of Haw River, Mrs. Joyce Sheila Ireland of Swepsonville and Mrs. Sylvia Jean Bolick of Bethlehem; two sons, Mr. James B. Johnson Jr. of Greenville, S.C., and Mr. Kenneth B. Johnson of Mebane; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Johnson and Mrs. Zell Redman, both of Efland; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. MEBANE - Mrs. Alma T. Conley, 81, of 4913 Mebane Oaks Road, died at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at her home after a long illness. A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Eugene Conley. She was a member of Mary's Grove Congregational Christian Church where she was a soloist with the choir and secretary of the church for 40 years. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. James N. (Sarah) Woods of Burlington, Ms. Margaret Julia Conley of the home, Mrs. Charles (Betty) Watkins of Mebane and Mrs. James (Eunice) Bryant of Rocky Mount; a son, Mr. Douglas Eugene Conley of Mebane; a brother, Mr. Norfolk Oldham of Mingo Junction, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. PITTSBORO - Mrs. Ruth Phillips Shaw, 73, of 556 Pete Thomas Road, died at 12:02 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after three years of failing health, three days critical. A native of Chatham County, she was the wife of Mr. Griff Shaw, who died in 1980, and the daughter of Mr. Junie Phillips and Mrs. Ettie Brewer Phillips, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Lynelta Carroll of Pittsboro; a brother, Mr. Ralph Phillips of Siler City; three grandchildren; one step grandchild; six great-grandchildren; and three great-step grandchildren.

GRAHAM - Mrs. Ethel Marie White, 78, of 2220 E. Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Fannie Alston, after a long illness. A life-long resident of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William F. 'Ned' White, and the daughter of Mr. George White and Mrs. Bertha Allen White, both deceased. She was a custodian in the local school system. She was a member of Burnett's Chapel Church, where she served in the Senior Choir, Missionary Circle, as Pastor's Aide and Church Deaconess. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Fannie Alston and Mrs. Patricia Lloyd, both of Graham; five sons, Mr. Walker White of Snow Camp, Mr. Harold White of Burlington, Mr. Coy White of the home, and Mr. Thomas White and Mr. Joseph White, both of Graham; three sisters, Mrs. Georgia Rogers, Ms. Charlotte White and Mrs. Phyllis Wiley, all of Graham; two brothers, Mr. Clemon White and Mr. Ezikel White, both of Graham; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. BURLINGTON - Mr. C. Vernon Durham, 76, of 102 Darrell Davis Road, died at 10:35 p.m. Monday, June 22, 1998, at his home.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nellie Agnes Tate Durham, who survives, and the son of Mr. Walter Harrison Durham and Mrs. Nannie Chatham Durham, both deceased. He owned and operated Durham Real Estate Company. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Panama. He was a member of Faith Bible Chapel.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Michael, Mrs. Frances Nance, Mrs. Ruth McIntyre and Miss Polly Durham, all of Gibsonville; and a brother, Mr. Harrison Durham of Gibsonville.
He was preceded in death by a stepmother, Mrs. Ella Dameron Durham; a sister, Ms. Annie Lee; and two brothers, Mr. Fred Durham and Mr. Elmo Durham.

SNOW CAMP - Mrs. Leota Womack Pittman, 80, of 4026 Willard Road, died at 2:40 p.m. Monday, June 22, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after six months of failing health.
A native of Chatham County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Jerry Ray Pittman Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Alonzo Lee Womack and Mrs. Daisy Brown Womack, both deceased. She was a retired care giver and a member of First Baptist Church of Graham.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Linda Pittman Burrow of Prattville, Ala.; a son, Mr. Jerry Ray Pittman Jr. of Graham; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
