Mr. Roderick Vanhook
BURLINGTON - Mr. Roderick Lavar Vanhook, 15, of 7471 N.C. 62 North, died at 12:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after an illness of one week.
A native of Orange County, he was the son of Ms. Sallie Ann Vanhook and Mr. Michael Rogers, who both survive. He was a 10th-grade student at Eastern Alamance High School.
Survivors other than his mother of the home and father of Burlington include four sisters, Ms. Deidre L. Vanhook of the home, Ms. Sharnita Rogers, Ms. Sharnel Rogers and Ms. Brittany Rogers, all of Burlington; three brothers, Mr. DeRon L. Vanhook of the home, Mr. Kirkston Rogers and Mr. Michael Rogers, both of Burlington; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Vanhook of Burlington; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Rogers of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Christian in Mebane Church by the Rev. Rory Garrison Sr., pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the Enoch Family Cemetery.
The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 7 to 8 Thursday evening, and at other times at the home.
Mr. Allen Horne
BURLINGTON - Mr. Allen “Bill” Horne, 79, of 743 E. Davis St., died Tuesday morning, Sept. 29, 1998, at his home after a sudden illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Sidney Allen “Tink” Horne and Mrs. Clytie Cates Horne, both deceased. He was a former employee of Horne Dry Cleaners and Davis Street Pharmacy. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Burlington.
Survivors include a stepmother, Mrs. Dollie D. Horne of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Dale (Pat) Barber of Burlington and Mrs. Barbara H. Durham of Elkridge, Md.; and a stepsister, Mrs. Dolores W. Planavsky of Grand Blanc, Mich.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pine Hill cemetery by Dr. Craig McMahan, pastor of First Baptist Church of Burlington.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 10 to 11 Thursday morning, and at other times at the home.

Miss Brenda F. Newell
ELON COLLEGE - Miss Brenda Faye Newell, 46, of 962 Elon-Ossipee Road, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
A native of Guilford County, she was the daughter of Mr. Shirley Newell and Mrs. Carolyn Wheeley Newell, both deceased. She was a hair stylist and a certified nursing assistant at Wesley Long Community Hospital in Greensboro. She attended Gibsonville Church of God.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Jack T. (Cathy) Myers Jr. of Salisbury; and a brother, Mr. Richard Newell of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Gibsonville Church of God by the Rev. Billy Dunigan, pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at the home.

GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Myrtle Alene Smith Gentry, 79, of 407 Whitesell St., died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at her home.
She was the wife of Mr. Joseph “Joe” Felbert Gentry, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Manuel D. Smith and Mrs. Emma Ruth Sexton Smith, both deceased. She was retired from Glen Raven Mills after 30 years of service and a member of First Baptist Church of Gibsonville.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include six daughters, Ms. Delma D. Roberts of the home, Mrs. Bill (Grace) Overman of Gibsonville, Ms. Jane Matherly of Mebane, Mrs. Garland (Joyce) Whitt of Burlington, Mrs. Douglas (Shirley) Baity of Whitsett and Mrs. Jimmy (Frances) Beal of Elon College; two sisters, Mrs. A. Jay (Beulah) Harrell of Chester, Va., and Mrs. Staley (Ollie) Dawson of Gibsonville; one brother, Mr. Theodore “Jeep” Smith of Gibsonville; and 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Fannie Pearl Smith and Ms. Ruth Smith Gerringer; and three brothers, Mr. Joe D. Smith, Mr. Hubert Smith and Mr. Cecil Smith.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bill Skenes, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Whitsett and the Rev. Harold Proffit Sr. of White Dove Baptist Church in Glen Raven. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mr. William B. Guthrie
PROVIDENCE - Mr. William Byrd Guthrie, 73, of Providence died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at his home.
Born July 30, 1925, in Caswell County, he was the husband for 47 years to Mrs. Sarah Ware Guthrie, who survives, and the son of Mr. Samuel Iry Guthrie and Mrs. Mary Hudgins Guthrie, both deceased. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, and was retired from the State of North Carolina Highway Department.
Survivors other than his wife include a daughter, Ms. Vickie Guthrie Craddock; a sister, Ms. Frances G. Wiley; a brother, Mr. Henry S. Guthrie; and a grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Melvin H. Guthrie, and a grandchild.
The funeral was conducted Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Danville by the Rev. David McGuire. A graveside service with military rites was conducted by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 in Highland Burial Park.

Mrs. Joan A. Edwards
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Mrs. Joan Ann Edwards, 59, of Columbus, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at her home.
A native of Burlington, she was the wife of the late Mr. Lee M. Edwards Sr., and the daughter of Ms. Corina Dorsett, who survives, and the late Mr. Henry Banks. She was the owner of Edwards Antiques and Fine Arts. She was active with St. Thomas Catholic School Youth Program and was a Board of Education Community Service member. She was a member of Bexley United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than her mother include five daughters, Ms. Vickie Dorsey, Ms. Brenda Neal, Ms. Pamela Mitchiner, Ms. Denise Edwards and Ms. Jameelah Wharton; two sons, Mr. Lee M. Edwards Jr. and Mr. Douglas Edwards; a sister, Ms. Linda Goins; a brother, Mr. Thirl Dorsett; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Earl Dorsett.
The funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. today by the Rev. Steven Fewell. There will be a private family burial.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Vance H. Isley of 438 Quintas Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Graham after an illness of several weeks.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Phyllis Isley, who survives, and the late Mrs. Edna Walker Isley. He was the son of Mr. Walter Isley and Mrs. Ida Banks Isley, both deceased. He was a member of Woods Chapel AME Church and the Senior Choir.
Survivors other than his wife of Miami include five daughters, Mrs. Michelle Clark of Bronx, N.Y., Mrs. Lori Thornton of Miami, Mrs. Andrea Kay Lee of Burlington, Mrs. Linda Robinson of Mebane and Mrs. Rita Lynch of Baltimore; a son, Mr. Vance William Isley of Graham; two sisters, Mrs. Theresa Chaplin of Graham and Mrs. Alberta Pettiford of Durham; and 14 grandchildren.

GREENSBORO - Mrs. Ethel Leonard Rogers, 77, of 4428 Cove Cay Lane, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
A native of Davidson County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Carl E. Rogers. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class. She retired after 34 years of service with Western Electric Co., and after retirement she was active in the Telephone Pioneers and in the Santa Ambassadors Program. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Liberty.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Diane Rogers) Barbee of Holly Springs; three sons, Mr. Danny Carl Rogers of Greenwood, S.C., and Mr. Jack Stephen Rogers and Mr. Timothy D. Rogers, both of Greensboro; a brother, Mr. Paul Leonard of Thomasville; and 10 grandchildren.

MEBANE - Mr. Coy Leonard Dixon Jr., 46, of 311 Fitch Drive, died Saturday morning, Sept. 26, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after a sudden illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mrs. Rachel C. Dixon Hester, who survives, and the late Mr. Coy Leonard Dixon Sr. He was a graduate of Graham High School and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors other than his mother of Mebane include his stepfather, Elder Norman K. Hester Sr. of Mebane; two sisters, Mrs. Shelby H. Pittman of the home and Ms. Cynthia Dixon of Raleigh; two brothers, Mr. William Derrick Dixon of Elon College and Mr. Norman K. Hester Jr. of Burlington; two foster sisters, Mrs. Cyntress Brunson of Fayetteville and Mrs. Vanessa Graves of Burlington; a foster brother, Mr. Perry Wyatt of Durham; a grandmother, Mrs. Beulah Cousin Tanner of Hillsborough; and a grandfather, Mr. Daniel Martin of Charlotte.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Minnie Torain Snipes of 5580 Byrd Road, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of Mr. Raymond Snipes, who survives, and the daughter of the late Mrs. Annie Torain. She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Baptist Church of Leasburg.
Survivors other than her husband include two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Yarborough of Graham and Miss Shelia Snipes of Burlington; six sons, Mr. Jimmy Snipes and Mr. Charles Snipes, both of Burlington, Mr. W.D. Snipes of Mebane, Mr. A.J. Snipes of Durham, Mr. Thad Snipes of Caswell and Mr. Sanford Snipes of Rougemont; 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
