Mr. Otis E. Miles
GIBSONVILLE - Mr. Otis Ervin Miles, 72, of 7161 Powerline Road, died at 10:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at his home after a short illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Gladys Stanley Miles, and the son of Mr. Lee Abner Miles and Mrs. Rena Underwood Miles, both deceased. He was retired from Lemco Mills Ind., and was recently employed by Stadler Country Hams and was a farmer. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gibsonville, where he served as a deacon, choir member and former Sunday school superintendent.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Peggy) Litten and Mrs. Tony (Hope) Neese, both of Gibsonville; four sisters, Mrs. Eva Walker and Mrs. Elsie Ammons, both of Gibsonville, Mrs. Hazel Ammons of Asbury, N.J., and Mrs. Lois Lee of Reidsville; three brothers, Mr. Robert A. Miles of Gibsonville, Mr. Homer B. Miles of Reidsville and Mr. Harvey C. Miles of Burlington; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Louise Oliver; and two brothers, Mr. Felton Miles and Mr. Elbert Miles.
The family will be at the home.

Mrs. Julia Porterfield
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Julia Melissa Pore Porterfield, 95, of 323 Baldwin Road, died at 2:10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at White Oak Manor after three months of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Randolph County, she was the wife of the late Mr. John Lee Porterfield, and the daughter of Mr. John Franklin Pore and Mrs. Margaret Shipton Pore, both deceased. She was a retired inspector for Aircraft Manufacturing Co., and was a former employee of Graham U-Wash-It. She was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Mrs. Cecil (Judy) Kimbrey of Efland; and a brother, Mr. Gilbert Harmon Pore of Burlington.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Graham Memorial Park.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 1 p.m. until the service.

Mr. Freeman L. Henley
BURLINGTON - Mr. Freeman Lee “Bill” Henley, 72, of White Oak Manor and formerly of Climax, died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at White Oak Manor after several years of failing health.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Ila Felts Henley, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Sallie Price Henley, who survives, and the late Mr. Charlie Henley. He was a heavy equipment operator and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of Rock Creek Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.
Survivors other than his wife of Burlington and mother of High Point include two sisters, Mrs. Juanita Smith of High Point and Mrs. Mary “Lib” Hicks of Greensboro; and a brother, Mr. Roy Henley of Annandale, Va.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel by the Rev. Carlton Wilson, associate pastor of Towe Memorial Baptist Church, and the Rev. Tommy Gregory of Light of the World Ministry. Burial will be in Rock Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Whitsett.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home, 611 Harris St., Burlington, or at the home of the mother, 600 E. Fairfield Road, High Point.

Mrs. M. Alene Gentry
GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Myrtle Alene Smith Gentry, 79, of 407 Whitesell St., died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at his home.
She was the wife of Mr. Joseph “Joe” Felbert Gentry, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Manuel D. Smith and Mrs. Emma Ruth Sexton Smith, both deceased. She was retired from Glen Raven Mills after 30 years of service and a member of First Baptist Church of Gibsonville.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include six daughters, Ms. Delma D. Roberts of the home, Mrs. Bill (Grace) Overman of Gibsonville, Ms. Jane Matherly of Mebane, Mrs. Douglas (Shirley) Baity of Whitsett and Mrs. Jimmy (Frances) Beal of Elon College; two sisters, Mrs. A. Jay (Beulah) Harrell of Chester, Va., and Mrs. Staley (Ollie) Dawson of Gibsonville; one brother, Mr. Theodore “Jeep” Smith of Gibsonville; and 13 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Fannie Pearl Smith and Ms. Ruth Smith Gerringer; and three brothers, Mr. Joe D. Smith, Mr. Hubert Smith and Mr. Cecil Smith.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bill Skenes, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Whitsett and the Rev. Harold Proffit Sr. of White Dove Baptist Church in Glen Raven. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mr. Matthew Dickens Jr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. Matthew “Mac” Berkley Dickens Jr., 71, of 306 S. Beaumont Ave., died at 6:29 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health.
A native of Reidsville, he was the husband of Mrs. Lorraine Hall Dickens, who survives, and the son of Mr. Matthew Berkley Dickens Sr. and Mrs. Lottie Lillard Dickens, both deceased. He was retired from Alamance Electric and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. Raymond E. “Ray” Dickens of Burlington and Mr. Roy B. Dickens of Reidsville; a sister, Mrs. Daisy Johnson of Eden; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at Lower Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Carlton Wilson, retired Baptist minister, and the Rev. Frank Thacker, pastor of Victory Baptist Church. Burial and a private graveside service will be held Tuesday at Alamance Memorial Park.
There will be no visitation. The family will be at the home.

Mr. Lonnie L. Smith
BURLINGTON - Mr. Lonnie Lee “Buddy” Smith, 83, of 279 S. Cobb Ave., died at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Hospice Home after an illness of four months.
A native of Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Rachel White Smith and the son of Mr. Grover Cleveland Smith and Mrs. Lucy Cora Pettigrew Smith, both deceased. He was a former salesman with Home Security Life Insurance Co., United American Life Insurance Co. and Alamance Memorial Park. He was former owner and operator of Smith Coin Laundry and Bud-Ray Cafeteria. He was a former member of the Burlington Moose Lodge and a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church, where he was active in the senior choir and a former deacon.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Barbara McClure of the home; a brother, Mr. Thomas A. Smith of Burlington; three sisters, Mrs. Frances S. Braxton of Dover, Del., Mrs. Lucille S. Turner and Mrs. Ethel S. Martin, both of Burlington; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Clifford Michael Smith Sr.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Glen Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Stephenson, interim pator of Glen Hope Baptist Church, and the Rev. James Rosser, pastor of Haw River Christian Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Mr. J.B. Bruner
BURLINGTON - Mr. J.B. Bruner, 61, of 166 Old Glencoe Road, died at 11:20 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after one month of failing health.
A native of Amelia County, Va., he was the husband of Mrs. Gaynell Cobb Bruner, who survives, and the son of Mr. Lester Bruner and Mrs. Ida Mae Woods Bruner, both deceased. He was an automotive body repairman and a member of Prospect Hill Hunting Club, where he trained beagles for Johnny Bruner. He was a member of Wicker Street Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Lisa Bruner Church of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Eaton of Burlington and Miss Betty Bruner of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Mr. Lester Bruner Jr., Mr. Bobby Bruner and Mr. Charlie Bruner, all of Burlington, and Mr. Harold Bruner of Graham; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Larry James Bruner; and three brothers, Mr. W. W. Bruner, Mr. Smith Wayne Bruner and Mr. John Bruner.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Tommy Love and Elder Wallis Smith. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Miss Marion Campbell
BURLINGTON - Miss Marion G. Campbell, 96, of 414 Tarpley St., died at 10:02 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Staten Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of Mr. George Washington Campbell and Mrs. Minnie DeBeer Campbell, both deceased. She was retired after 41 years of service with Mobile Oil Co. in New York City. She was active with the Ladies Auxiliary at the former Alamance Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Women’s Circle and performed volunteer work for many years.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mrs. Norman (Phyllis) Campbell of Burlington; and three nieces, Mrs. Stephen (Karen) Johnson and Mrs. James (Donna) Harper, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Patrick (Brenda) Keany of Greensboro.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Norman Jay Campbell and Mr. George Winston Campbell.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Front Street United Methodist Church by Dr. William C. Simpson Jr., pastor, and Dr. G. Robert McKenzie, pastor emeritus. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Ms. Margaret A. Medlin
ROCKY MOUNT - Ms. Margaret A. Medlin, 54, of 1016 Williford St., died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Nash General Hospital.
She was the wife of Mr. G. Bill Medlin, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. William Lloyd Avery and Mrs. Naomi Faircloth Avery, both deceased. She was a member of Rocky Mount Church of God.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a son, Mr. John W. Medlin of Burlington; one daughter, Mrs. Stacie Medlin Abdeljawad of Milwaukee, Wis.; five brothers, Mr. James Avery of Wilson, Mr. Tommy Avery of Wake Forest, the Rev. S. W. Avery of Erwin, the Rev. Carlye Avery of Greensboro and Mr. Ricky Avery of Charlotte; four sisters, Ms. Janet L. Avery of the home, Ms. Doris A. Beck of Lexington, Ms. Ruth Lawrence of Dunn and Ms. Elease Harrell of Climax; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at South Rocky Mount Church of God by the Rev. Olin Tatum and the Rev. Troy Baggett. Burial will be in Middlesex Church of God cemetery.

Mr. Robert Salmons Jr.
ELON COLLEGE - Mr. Robert “Bobby” Donald Salmons Jr., 43, of 414 Manning Ave., died at 4:20 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after 18 months of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mrs. Margaret Rich Salmons, who survives, and the late Mr. Robert Donald Salmons Sr. He was employed by Hinshaw Tile for more than 10 years.
Survivors other than his mother of Phoenix include one son, Mr. Joseph Donald Salmons of Phoenix; one sister, Mrs. Patricia Ann Alexander of Phoenix; and a paternal grandmother, Ms. Dorothy Salmons of Burlington.
A graveside service will be conducted at Magnolia cemetery in Elon College at 11 a.m. today.
