Mrs. Clara M. Thomas
PITTSBORO - Mrs. Clara Mildred Thomas, 89, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at Laurels of Chatham.
A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Louin Edward Thomas. She retired from J.M. Odell Manufacturing Co. after 45 years of service. She was a member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Ms. Betty Lou Jones and Ms. Clarine T. Thomas, both of Pittsboro, and Ms. Anne T. Pitts of Elon College; a son, Mr. Charles Edward Thomas of Pittsboro; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Gilead Baptist Church by the Rev. John Singletary. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Griffin Funeral Service from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of Ms. Betty Lou Jones, 1964 Andrews Store Road, Pittsboro.

Ms. Grace Wagner
GRAHAM - Ms. Grace “Valerie” Wagner, 68, of 221 Graham Road, died at 4:20 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at the Hospice Home of Burlington.
A native of Wana, W.Va., she was the daughter of Mr. James Shriver Strosnider and Mrs. Mary Ruth Rinehart Strosnider, both deceased. She was retired from Western Electric Co., and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was a member of Haw River United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Brenda K. Wagner Willoughby of Haw River; a son, Mr. James Thomas Wagner of Graham; four sisters, Miss Beverly Nell Strosnider and Mrs. Harriett Agnes Dunn, both of Balto, Md., Mrs. Bette Dolores Cumberledge of Brave, Pa., and Mrs. Edna Claire Whipkey of Carmichaels, Pa.; a brother, Mr. James Leslie Strosnider of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; and one great-step grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Kenneth Lee Wagner Jr.; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Marguerite Crider, Mrs. Sylvia Ruth Goetz and Miss Emma Lou Strosnider; two brothers, Mr. Junior Strosnider and Mr. Charles Stuart Strosnider; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Haw River United Methodist Church by Dr. Rod Mullens, pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times at the home of the son, 221 Graham Road, N.C. 27253.
Mr. Bobby L. Fain
GREENSBORO - Mr. Bobby Lee Fain, 55, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at his home.
He was the husband of Mrs. Patricia Puckett Fain, who survives, and the son of Ms. Daisy Mahaley Fain, who survives. He worked at Worchester Controls in Liberty and was a member of First Nazarene Church of Burlington.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Burlington include a daughter, Ms. Debbie Shutt Smythe of Boca Raton, Fla.; a stepson, Mr. Scott A. Lovin of Raleigh; and a sister, Ms. Susan Fain Hughes of Burlington.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. Entombment will be in Guilford Memorial Park.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mr. Charlie A. Haynes
MEBANE - Mr. Charlie Allen Haynes, 80, of 1240 S. Fifth St., died at 3:07 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after an illness of two weeks.
Born July 31, 1918, in Benton, Ill., he was the husband of Mrs. Zola E. Haynes, who survives, and the son of Mr. Charlie Ross Haynes and Mrs. Mamie Ward Haynes, both deceased. He was retired from General Electric Co. in Mebane and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a Baptist.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Pat) Jones of Mebane and Mrs. Wayne (Diane) Westbrooks of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Allen Gary Haynes of Aurora, Ill., and Mr. David R. Haynes of Burlington; eight grandchildren; one step grandchild; three great-grandchildren; and two great-step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Irene Haynes Slavey, and a brother, Mr. John L. Haynes.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Agape Baptist Church of Mebane by the Rev. Steve Hinton and the Rev. Ken Simpson. Burial will be in Hawfields Presbyterian Church cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Mrs. Thelma D. Howe
GASTONIA - Mrs. Thelma Davis Howe, 92, formerly of 3502 Howe Dairy Road, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at the Brian Center in Gastonia.
A native of Gaston County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Paul Grier Howe and the daughter of Mr. Marshall C. Davis and Mrs. Lizzie Faires Davis, both deceased. She was a graduate of Asheville Normal College and was a homemaker. She was a retired teacher from South Gastonia School, which is now H.H. Beam School. She was past president of the Robinson School PTA and the Gaston County Extension Homemakers. She was a life-long member of Olney Presbyterian Church, where she was past president of the Women of the Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Ms. Pauline H. Ratchford of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Mrs. Steve (Peggy H.) Helms of Burlington, and Ms. Jane Rednour and Mrs. Leonard (Mary Lou H.) Armstrong, both of Gastonia; two sons, the Rev. Ray A. Howe of Lake City, S.C., and Mr. Kenneth L. Howe of Gastonia; six sisters, Ms. Hazeline Howell, Ms. Esther Hoffman, Ms. Robbie Lee Robinson and Ms. Aubrey Capps, all of Gastonia, Ms. Isabelle Dickson of Shelby and Ms. Mable Neal Stroupe of Columbus, Ga.; two brothers, Mr. Joe Davis of Morganton and Mr. Gene Davis of Miami; 17 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Buena D. Howell and Ms. Lillian D. Costner, and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Olney Presbyterian Church by Dr. Robert McCully. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be in the church fellowship hall following the service, and at other times at the home of Mr. Ken Howe and Mrs. Rebecca Howe, 3415 Howe Dairy Road, Gastonia.

EFLAND - Mrs. Myrtle Dodson Carden, 84, of 5506 Chestnut Ridge Church Road, died at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at the Hospice Home of Burlington after four months of failing health, two weeks critical.
A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Dexter S. “Red” Carden, and the daughter of Mr. Samuel G. Dodson Sr. and Mrs. Sophronia Howard Dodson, both deceased. She attended Riverside Baptist Church and was a member of the Ladies’ Bible Class.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Helen L. Cates of Burlington, Mrs. Shirley Ecott of Oak Island and Mrs. Linda Deece of Mebane; three sons, Mr. William Carden of Haw River, Mr. Kenneth J. Carden Sr. of Graham and Mr. Jerry R. Carden of the home; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Rosa Dodson and Mrs. Mildred Shue; five brothers, Mr. Eugene Dodson, Mr. Floyd Dodson, Mr. Ernest Dodson, Mr. Banks Dodson and the Rev. Sam Dodson Jr.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Riverside Baptist Church by the Rev. Ron Boysel, pastor, and the Rev. Curtis Oakley, pastor emeritus. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church cemetery in Efland.

Mr. Loy S. Bowland
GRAHAM - Mr. Loy Samuel Bowland Sr., 76, of 510 Oakwood Lane, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Hospice Home in Burlington after six months of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Annie Frank Stockard Bowland, who survived at the time of his death, and the son of Mr. Lon Wallace Bowland and Mrs. Sally Perry Bowland, both deceased. He was a retired health inspector for the N.C. Department of Agriculture and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Graham Presbyterian Church and the Brotherhood Sunday School.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sally Bowland Hall of Graham; a son, Mr. Loy Samuel “Sam” Bowland Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Bowland Pritchett of Greensboro and Mrs. Lucille Bowland Love of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Lon Banks Bowland of Burlington; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Graham Presbyterian Church by Dr. William C. Weckerly, the Rev. Lou East and the Rev. Betsy Severance. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

GRAHAM - Mrs. Annie Frank Stockard Bowland, 73, of 510 Oakwood Lane, died at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at the Hospice Home in Burlington after 18 months of failing health, one month critical.
A native of Graham, she was the wife of the late Mr. Loy S. Bowland Sr., and the daugher of Mr. Frank Warren Stockard and Mrs. Annie Hunter Stockard, both deceased. She was retired from Central Farm Credit Service and was active in the Democratic Party. She was a member of Graham Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sally Bowland Hall of Graham; a son, Mr. Loy Samuel “Sam” Bowland Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. John H. Stockard.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Frances Johnson Council, 74, of 100 Wade Coble Drive, died at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at Twin Lakes Center.
She was the wife of the late Mr. Robert Alvin Council, and the daughter of Mr. Ira B. Johnson and Mrs. Lessie Phelps Johnson, both deceased. She was retired from Kayser-Roth Corp., and was a member of First Baptist Church of Elon College.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Daphne Wagoner of High Point; a son, Mr. Donald Council of Stevens City, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Council of St. Paul’s; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandchild.

ALTAMAHAW - Mr. Charles “Sonny” William McIntyre Sr., 88, of 3094 Cherokee Drive, died at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at his home after two years of failing health, six months critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Ruth Gertrude Cozart McIntyre, who survives, and the son of Mr. William Seymore McIntyre and Mrs. Mary Ella Clark McIntyre, both deceased. He retired from Glen Raven Mills after 50 years of service. He was a member of West Burlington Church of God.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. Charles William McIntyre Jr. of Hampton, Va., and Mr. Michael Allen McIntyre of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Patterson and Mrs. Bela Spoon, both of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Frank MacIntyre of Virginia; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mrs. Jewell Winn, Mrs. Kate Dunn, Mrs. Ethel Tate and Mrs. Lake Hopkins; and a brother, Mr. Everett “Mac” Alfonzo MacIntyre.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Olin Tatum, pastor of West Burlington Church of God. Burial will be in Bethlehem Christian Church cemetery.
