BURLINGTON - Mr. Earl Bates Johnson, 63, of 2707 Spanish Oak Hill Road died September, 1998, at his home.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Norman Bates Johnson and Mrs. Joy Bell Coble Johnson, both deceased. He was a farmer and attended Andrews Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Mr. Roscoe L. Johnson of Kernersville and Mr. Lewis D. Johnson of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at Graham Memorial Park by Dr. Tommy Willis, pastor of Andrews Memorial Baptist Church.

Mr. Clyde L. Corbett
HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Clyde Lindell Corbett, 46, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at his home.
Born Aug. 19, 1952, he was the husband of Mrs. Marcia Massey Corbett, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Mary McAdoo Corbett, who survives, and the late Mr. Louis Corbett.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Efland include a daughter, Ms. Brandy Corbett of Chapel Hill; two brothers, Mr. Carl McADoo of Efland and Ms. Archie McAdoo of Columbia, Md.; two stepdaughters, Ms. Teela Massey and Ms. Keshia Massey, both of the home; and two stepsons, Mr. Nathan Snipes of Chapel Hill and Mr. Brian Snipes of the home.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gaines Chapel A.M.E. Church in Efland by the Rev. Charles Blalock Sr. Burial will be in Gaines Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at Chavis-Parker Funeral Chapel from 7 to 8 this evening.

MEBANE - Ms. Goley Dempsey Graves, 77, of 706 Vance St., died at 2:45 a.m. Monday, September 14, 1998, at her home after a long illness.

Mr. George D. Blackwell
YANCEYVILLE - Mr. George Dabbett Blackwell, 79, of 104 George’s Lane, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at Alamance-Caswell Hospice Home in Burlington.
Born Feb. 20, 1919, in Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mable Covington Blackwell, who survives, and the son of Mr. John Blackwell and Mrs. Senora Blackwell, both deceased. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in World War II, and was a retired chef in White Plains, N.J. He was a member of Blackwell Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sisters, Mrs. Marie Henderson and Mrs. Adelaide Foster, both of Yanceyville, and Mrs. Mattie Sue Watkins of Reidsville.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Fulton Funeral home from 7 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Mr. Charlie H. Cobb
ELON COLLEGE - Mr. Charlie Hughes Cobb, 81, of 1317 Pagetown Road, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after an illness of one month.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mozelle Page Cobb, and the son of Mr. Curry Cobb and Mrs. Jennie Underwood Cobb, both deceased. He was a former employee of Kayser-Roth Corp., and TorqueElastics. He attended Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church and was a member of Cherry Grove Ruritan Club.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Carol) Belton of Burlington and Mrs. Larry (Jo Ann) Williams of Elon College; a brother, Mr. Vester Cobb of Reidsville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Mr. Arthur Cobb, Mr. Allie Cobb, Mr. Chester Cobb, Mr. Lee Cobb and Mr. Willie Cobb.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Wallis Smith, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening.
Mr. Williard L. Barber
GIBSONVILLE - Mr. Williard Lewis Barber, 76, of 813 Burlington Road, died Monday, September 14, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after a short illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Heenan Littleton Barber and Mrs. Anna Gerringer Barber, both deceased. He was a retired employee of Isley Knitting.
Survivors include three daughters, Miss Kathy Barber of Durham, Ms. Susan Barber of Burlington and Mrs. Tammy Ramirez of Elon College; a sister, Mrs. Endora Pyle of Elon College; a brother, Mr. Heenan Cornelius Barber of Burlington; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. C. Max Allman, pastor of People’s Memorial Christian Church. Burial will be in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8 thisevening, and at other times at the home of the sister, 1762 Prince Edward Drive, Elon College.
Mrs. Maggie S. Stewart
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Maggie Marie Stutts Stewart, 70, of 530 Queen Ann St., died at 7:45 a.m. Monday, September 14, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical center after an illness of two weeks.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Rubert Sylvester Stewart, and the daughter of Mr. Ansel Stutts and Mrs. Nannie Carroll Stutts, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Ida Stewart) Hutcherson of Burlington and Mrs. Wayne (Blanche) Tranbarger of Mebane; three sons, Mr. Everette Stewart, Mr. Jesse Stewart, and Mr. Rubert “Sam” Stewart, all of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Ronnie (Martha) Long o f Haw River; two brothers, Mr. Roger Stutts if Burlington and Mr. Herny Stutts of Gibsonville; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

SNOW CAMP - Mr. Thomas Hodgin Pike, 88, of 515 Sylvan School road, Snow Camp, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at his home after a sudden illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Gertrude Thompson Pike and Mrs. Grace Albright Foster Pike, who survives. He was the son of Mr. J. Gurney Pike and Mrs. Clara Dixon Pike, both deceased. He was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was a member of Cane Creek Friends Meeting.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Lee Younts of Snow Camp; a sister, Mrs. Flora Thompson of Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Health Services; a step-daughter, Mrs. Diane Cummins of Graham; three grandchildren; two step grandchidren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cane Creek Friends Meeting by Dale Matthews, pastor, and the Rev. Robert K. Eldredge, Methodist minister. Burial will be in The Meeting House Cemetery.

Mrs. Bessie Henderson
YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Bessie Ann Brown Henderson, 59, of 5043 N.C. 86 North, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at her home.
Born April 22, 1939 in Caswell County, she was the wife of Mr. James A. Henderson, who survives, and the daughter of Mrs. Betty Jones Brown, who survives, and the late Mr. George W. Brown. She was an employee of Bartlett Yancey High School, where she worked in the cafeteria. She was a member of Blackwell Baptist Church, where she was an usher and served in the Missionary Circle.
Survivors other than her husband of the home and mother of Yanceyville include a daughter, Miss Teresa Henderson of Elon College; a son, Mr. Tyrone Henderson of Yanceyville; one sister, Mrs. Mary Daniel of Hackensack, N.J.; and two brothers, Mr. James L. Brown of Reidsville and Mr. George W. Brown of Rocky Point.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Pauline Martines
GREENSBORO - Mrs. Pauline Adams Martines, 90, formerly of 3707 Yanceyville St., died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
She was the wife of the late Mr. Antonio Martines. She retired in 1970 from Cone Mills after 48 years of service.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Frances Everhart of Greenville, S.C.; two sons, Mr. Antonio Martines Jr. of Gibsonville and Mr. James David “Jimmy’’ Martines of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, Mr. Earl Adams of Greensboro; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Margie Blake.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel by the Rev. Randy Pearman. Burial will be at Lakeview Memorial Park.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 this evening.
The Rev. Roy C. Wells
BURLINGTON - The Rev. Roy Crawford Wells, 69, of 5532 Holt Crossroads, died at 10:05 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at his home after six months of failing health, two weeks critical.
A native of Vance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Della Estelle Wilson Wells, who survives, and the son of Mr. Roy Fletcher Wells and Mrs. Mary Cottrell Jones, both deceased. He was a former driver with Associated Transport, and was a former employee of Chandler Office Supply. He was founder and former pastor for 25 years of Temple Baptist Church in Haw River. He was former pastor of Eastside Baptist Church in High Point, and treasurer for the Alamance Baptist Missionary Conference. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Airborne Division.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three daughters, Mrs. Lynn (Janice) Nicks of Charlotte, Mrs. Mike (Patty) Osborne of Burlington and Mrs. Terry (Darlene) Hutchens of Gibsonville; three sisters, Mrs. Louise W. Mullen of Louisburg, Mrs. Elizabeth W. Vester and Mrs. Caroline W. Duke, both of Whitakers; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Robert Edward Wells.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Temple Baptist Church by the Rev. James Black, pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The body will be placed in Temple Baptist Church of Haw River where visitation will be held from 6 to 9 this evening. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service.
At other times the family will be at the home.
