Miss Aretta M. Norris
GIBSONVILLE - Miss Aretta Marie Norris, 10, of 6501 Friedens Church Road, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital of injuries received when struck by an automobile.
A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., she was the daughter of Ms. Melinda Lynn Marion of Bloomington, Ind. She was the adopted daughter of Mr. Sydney Norris and Mrs. Ethel Walling Norris, who survive. She was a fifth-grade student at Gibsonville Elementary School, and a member of the school choir.
Survivors other than her mother and her adoptive parents of the home include one sister, Ms. Barbara Aldridge of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Bartlett Funeral Home by the Rev. Henry Reece. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Bartlett Funeral Home from 7 to 9 Sunday evening, and at other times at the home.
Mr. Claude C. Fitch
BURLINGTON - Mr. Claude Carl Fitch, 98, of 4292 Red Bluff Road, Loris, S.C. died at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields after several years of failing health, four days critical. He was a former resident of Burlington.<
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Lucille Creech Fitch and Mrs. Ruth Todd Fitch who survives, and son of Mr. Jasper Harrison Fitch and Mrs. Susan Scott Fitch, both deceased. He was a retired welder, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Burlington.
Survivors other than his wife include one daughter, Mrs. Hellen Fitch Groves of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Carl Fitch of Graham and Mr. Jasper Harrison Fitch of Burlington; one stepdaughter, Ms. Princess Ann Buffkin fo Loris, S.C.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and two great-step grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by Dr. Howard Thompson, pastor of the Burlington Assembly of God and the Rev. L.C. “Butch’’ Troxler, assistant pastor. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times, at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Helen F. Groves, 1214 Williamson St., Burlington.
Mrs. Emma H. Cheek
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Emma Holland Cheek, 71, of 1864 White Kennel Road, #30, died at 1:14 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after five years of failing health, three weeks critical.
A native of Rockingham County, she was the wife of the late Mr. David Wesley Cheek, and the daughter of Mr. Ruben Reid Holland and Mrs. Fannie Baker Holland, both deceased. She was retired from Lemco Hosiery, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Sherre Cheek Hogan of Burlington; three sons, Mr. Alan Holland of Fredricksberg, Va., Mr. Tony Holland of Graham and Mr. James Cheek of Charlotte; three sisters, Mrs. Ruby Holland Adkins and Mrs. Barbara Holland Garland, both of Haw River, and Mrs. Margaret Holland Carden of Burlington; six brothers, Mr. James “Dink’’ Holland, Mr. Frank Holland and Mr. Otis Holland, all of Burlington, Mr. Charlie Holland of Madison, Mr. Leon Holland of Alamance, and Mr. Richard Holland of Graham; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Mr. Clarence Holland, Mr. Johnny Holland and Mr. Bill Holland.
A memorial service will be conducted at 5 p.m. today at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Jack Phillips.
The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 4 to 5 this evening, and at other times at the home of a son, Mr. Tony Holland, 2155 Quail Drive, Graham.
Mr. Coy E. Mabe Sr.
PROSPECT HILL - Mr. Coy Ephriam Mabe Sr., 95, of 14286 Highway 86 South, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after several months of failing health.
A native of Alleghany County, he was the husband for 70 years of Mrs. Lillian Chandler Mabe who survives, and the son of Mr. Fielden Mabe and Mrs. Emma Joines Mabe, both deceased. He attended Alleghany County Schools and was a graduate of Elon College. He taught public school for 42 years. He was a member of Lea Bethel Baptist Church and the Caswell Brother Hood Masonic Lodge 11.
Survivors other than his wife include two sons, Mr. Coy E. Mabe Jr. of Durham and Mr. Harrell Mabe of Yanceyville; one sister, Mrs. Boyd Bryant of Laurel Springs; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Lea Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Claude Harrelson, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Hooper Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 this evening.

Mr. George L. Benton
BURLINGTON - Mr. George L. Benton, 85, of 3951 Mossy Rock Road, Greensboro, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Verchial Benton of the home; one son, Mr. Phillip C. Benton of Greensboro; two daughters, Ms. Mary Stewart and Ms. Carolyn Simmons, both of Greensboro.
The funeral will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the Goldie Hargett Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Nolden Swynn
YANCEYVILLE - Mr. Nolden Gwynn of 1044 Foster Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, in Annie Penn Memorial Hospital in Reidsville.
Born Sept. 30, 1916 in Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Beatrice F. Gwynn who survives, and the son of Mr. Monroe Gwynn and Mrs. Edna Palmer Gwynn. He was a self-employed tobacco farmer. He was a member of Blackwell Baptist Church where he served as an usher.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Jean Brown of Nyack, N.Y.; one brother, Mr. Robert Gwynn of Pelham; four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Allen, Mrs. Ann Miller, Mrs. Inez Arnold and Mrs. Lucille Martin, all of Reidsville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 this evening at Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville. The family will be at the home.
Mrs. Hazel C. Wilson
FLORAL CITY, Fla. - Mrs. Hazel Coleman Wilson, 71, of Floral City and formerly of Burlington, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at her home after an extended illness.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Howard Luther Wilson and the daughter of Mr. Osie V. Coleman and Mrs. Fannie H. Coleman, both deceased. She was a graduate of Burlington High School in Burlington. She worked for May Hosiery Mill for several years and for Tommy’s Mini-Mart on Trollinger St. for 14 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Burlington.
She is survived by a son, Mr. Edward Luther Wilson of the home; and a daughter, Mrs. Susan Wilson Walker of Burlington.
A memorial service will be held at 11:15 a.m. Monday at Brookwood Baptist Church in Burlington by the Rev. Gary Gates, associate pastor, and the Rev. Charles Little.

Mrs. Loma K. Glenn
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Mrs. Loma Kate Glenn, 94, of Westminster Retirement Community, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at Westminster Towers.
She was a teacher for 30 years and was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Rock Hill.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Vicky Gallman of Rock Hill and formerly of Burlington; a son, Mr. Robert Henry Glenn Jr. of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Rock Hill.
Mr. Richard S. Bell Jr.
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. - Mr. Richard S. “Rick” Bell Jr., 46, of 301-A Miami St., died the first week of September 1998 at his home after six months of failing health.
A native of Iredell County, he was the son of Mr. Richard S. “Dick” Bell Sr. and Mrs. Rebecca Hobbs “Becky” Bell, who both survive. He was a graduate of Glade Valley High School and Wingate College and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He owned and operated Bell’s Blue Ribbon Food Co. He was a Presbyterian.
Survivors other than his parents of Burlington include a sister, Mrs. Med Bell Hoyle of Florence, S.C.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pine Hill cemetery by Dr. Charles Williams, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of the parents, 436 Tarleton Ave., Burlington.
Mr. William Buckland
ALAMANCE - Mr. William H. Buckland, 86, of 4470 Alamance Road, died at 3:10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health.
A native of Beaver, W.Va., he was the husband of Mrs. Barbara Y. Buckland, who survives, and the son of Mr. Elbert Buckland and Mrs. Ada Pearl Pittman Buckland Love, both deceased. He worked in the coal mining industry in Raleigh County, W.Va., from an early age. He retired to North Carolina in 1970. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Louise Hensley of Graham and Mrs. Hilda Menasian of Waynesville; four sons, Mr. James Buckland Sr. and Mr. Carl Buckland, both of Burlington, Mr. Glenn Buckland of Greensboro and Mr. Larry Buckland of Ocala, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Davis of Beckley, W.Va., and Mrs. Ida Prince of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Tim Robinson, pastor of First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Peter Kemeny, associate pastor of First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 1:45 to 2:45 Sunday afternoon, and at other times at the home.
Mrs. Inez McPherson
GRAHAM - Mrs. Inez Marlette McPherson, 74, of 3615 Brundage Lane, Mebane, died at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a critical illness of one day.
A native of West End in Moore County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Oliver Roscoe McPherson Jr. and the daughter of Mr. William Henry Marlette and Mrs. Maud Brown Marlette, both deceased. She was retired from AT&T and was a member of the AT&T Pioneers. She was a life member of the First United Methodist Church of Graham.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frances M. Holland of Mebane and Mrs. Melinda M. Johnson of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Thompson and Mrs. Opal Snipes, both of Graham; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandchild.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church of Graham by the Rev. Paul Phillips, pastor.
The family will be in the church parlor one hour before the service and at other times at the home.
