Mrs. Roberta M. Gant
BRENTWOOD, Calif. - Mrs. Roberta Mayo Gant, 76, of 3319 Delta Road, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at her home.
She was the wife of the late Mr. John K. Gant, and the daughter of Mr. Thomas Mayo and Mrs. Bessie Mayo, both deceased. She was a retired accountant
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Meri G. Walker of the home, and other relatives in Burlington.
A private memorial service will be held at the home at a later date.

Mr. Zelious Brandon Jr.
MILTON - Mr. Zealious Brandon Jr., 67, of 125 E.C. Jones Road, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va., after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Louise W. Burke
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Louise Watkins Burke, 84, of 1522 W. Davis St., died at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at her home after one year of failing health.
A native of Cedar Grove, she was the wife of the late Mr. Carl W. “Bunk” Burke Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Thomas William Watkins and Mrs. Ola Liner Watkins, both deceased. She was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Workers Sunday School Class.
Survivors include three sons, Mr. Carl W. Burke Jr. of Chatham, Va., Mr. Howard Edwin “Eddie” Burke of Roanoke, Va. and Mr. Thomas Watkins Burke of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Christine Shaw of Greensboro and Mrs. Katherine Tripp of Bethel; a brother, Mr. Howard Watkins of Lillington; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Vivian Coleman, Mrs. Vera King and Mrs. Mozelle Caruthers.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Front Street United Methodist Church by Dr. William C. Simpson, pastor, and the Rev. Duke Lackey, associate pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be in the John Wesley Room of Front Street United Methodist Church from 1:45 to 2:45 this afternoon, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Lottie J. Tyner
GAINESVILLE, Ga. - Mrs. Lottie Jenkins Tyner, 85, formerly of Haw River, and a longtime resident of Gainesville, died at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at Winward Nursing Home in Flowery Branch, Ga., after several years of failing health.
A native of Hall County, Ga., she was the wife of the late Mr. Hubert Tyner Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Henry Jenkins and Mrs. Jessie Baugh Jenkins Cheek, both deceased. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Gainesville, and was a former member of First Baptist Church of Haw River.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Robert Tyner of Gainesville; a sister, Mrs. Frances Cheek Phillips of Haw River; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Hubert Tyner Jr.; a brother, Mr. R.J. Jenkins; and a sister, Mrs. Ida J. Humphries.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home in Gainesville. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will be at Memorial Park Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mrs. Bertha M. Marsh
ASHEBORO - Mrs. Bertha McDowell Marsh, 82, of 238 Hampton Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at High Point Regional Hospital.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Mr. H. Baxter Marsh. She was retired from Randolph Hospital and was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Barbara Murray of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Nita Cagle of Asheboro; two brothers, Mr. Everette McDowell of Sanford and Mr. James V. McDowell of Forest Hill, Md.; two grandchildren; and two great-step grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Michael Jordan. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.
The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of her sister, 1517 Browers Chapel Road, Asheboro.

MEBANE - Mrs. Fannie Friend Hanninen, 74, of 7803 York Loop Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Mrs. Emma W. Kelly
PLAINFIELD, N.J. - Mrs. Emma Worth Kelly, 85, of 1454 E. Second St., died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at Plainfield Hospital after several weeks of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Melvin Kelly, and the daughter of Mr. Lewis Worth and Mrs. Letitia Preyer Worth, both deceased. She was a former member of Wayman’s Chapel AME Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Annie Worth Everette of Graham.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Coslow E. Holt Jr. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home 30 mintues before the serivce, and at other times at the home of the sister, 207 Robin Lane, Graham.
Mr. Thomas P. Tumey
BURLINGTON - Mr. Thomas Paul Tumey, 56, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998.
He was the husband for 35 years to Mrs. Patricia Tumey, who survives. He and his family moved to Burlington in 1989 with GKN Automotive. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was a member of Disciples in Mission and Christian Hearts and Hands.
Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Lisa Benz and Ms. Mary Jo Tumey; two sons, Mr. David Tumey and Mr. Rob Tumey; two brothers, Mr. Robert Tumey and Mr. Jack Tumey; and four grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be said at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at a later date.
Visitation and services will be conducted in Jackson, Mich.
Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Mrs. Lillian T. Porter
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Mrs. Lillian T. O’Neill Porter, 90, of Great Kills, N.Y., died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998 at her home.
A native of Boston, she was the wife of Mr. Thomas A. Porter, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. John O’Neill and Mrs. Caroline O’Neill, both deceased. She moved to Hanover, Mass., in the late 1940s, and to Roselle, N.J., in 1952. She settled in Great Kills in 1997. She worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for various companies in Boston and throughout New Jersey before retiring in 1967. She was a former parishioner of St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Clark, N.J.
Survivors other than her husband include two daughters, Ms. Margaret “Peggy” Dodson of Mebane and Ms. Joyce Nemeth of Staten Island; two sisters, Ms. Emily Carson and Ms. Ruthie Gorman, both of South Boston, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Mary Curan; and two brothers, Mr. Joseph O’Neill and Mr. John O’Neill.
The funeral was conducted at 10:15 a.m. Oct. 1 at Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home in Tottenville, N.Y., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Claire’s Roman Catholic Church in Great Kills. Burial was in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood, in Staten Island.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Helen C. Landi
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Helen C. Landi, 90, of Twin Lakes Retirement Center, 100 Wade Coble Drive, died at 2:20 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at the center.
A native of Providence, R.I., she was the wife of the late Mr. Nicholas Landi and the daughter of Mr. Louis Capozzoli and Mrs. Conceta Cipolla Capozzoli, both deceased. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She graduated from Bryant College in 1928 with a business major.
Survivors include a son, Mr. John N. Landi of the home; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of St. Frances Catholic cemetery in Providence. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at Twin Lakes Retirement Center.

Mr. Garland Rook Sr.
MEBANE - Mr. Garland Hayes Rook Sr., 73, a long time resident of Mebane, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at Integrated Health Care in Raleigh after an illness of six months.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Sarah Dale Green Rook. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Mebane. He was the retired produce manager at Winn-Dixie in Mebane.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Kimberly Rook of Durham; three sons, Mr. Jackie Green of Waynesboro, Va., Mr. Garland Hayes Rook Jr. of Mebane and Mr. Timothy Rook of Durham; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tabernacle Baptist Church by the Rev. Doug Ludlam, pastor. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 9 this evening.
