Mrs. Fannie Hanninen
MEBANE - Mrs. Fannie F. Hanninen, 74, died at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center after two years of failing health, one week critical.
Born March 17, 1924, in Sardis, Miss., she was the wife of Mr. Paavo V. Hanninen, who survives, and the daughter of Col. Alfred B. Friend and Mrs. Ruth Jackson Friend, both deceased. She was a teacher for 42 years in the Mississippi, Ohio and North Carolina school systems. She received a bachelor’s degree at the University of Mississippi and did post-graduate work at Youngstown State University and Ohio University. She was a member of Chi Omega social fraternity; a life member of Sigma Alpha Iota, a professional music fraternity, and the National Retired Teacher’s Association. She was also a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Burlington, where she was active in the church choir and participated in the Morning Circle.
Survivors other than her husband include four daughters, Ms. Fannie F. Howard of Fort Pierce, Fla., Ms. Martta Ruth Edwards of Stafford, Va., Ms. Paula H. Boyd of Mebane and Ms. Laina T. Saul of Evergreen, Colo.; a son, Mr. Paavo V. Hanninen of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; three sisters, Sister Mary Clare of Jemez Springs, N.M., Ms. Ruth Jackson Rea of Arlington, Va., and Ms. Rosa Smith of Marietta, Ga.; and 11 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at McClure Chapel in Mebane by the Rev. Joyce Taipale. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the Boyd home, 5198 Virginia Pine Trail, Mebane.

Mr. Zealious Brandon Jr.
MILTON - Mr. Zealious Brandon Jr., 67, of 125 E.C. Jones Road, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the son of Mr. Zealious Brandon Sr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Brandon, both deceased. He was a textile worker and a member of New Zion Baptist Church in Milton.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Melissa Brandon of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Ms. Delois Ross of Philadelphia, Mrs. Jean William of Washington, D.C., and Ms. Kathy Lipscomb of Temple Hill, Md.; and two brothers, Mr. Cleophia Brandon and Mr. Donald Brandon, both of Washington, D.C.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Syvilla Brandon and Ms. Frances B. Poteat, and a brother, Mr. George Brandon.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Zeb Kimber. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Belva L. Brown
GRAHAM - Mrs. Belva Lester Brown, 80, of 120 Shadowbrook Drive, Summerville, S.C., died Thursday evening, Oct. 8, 1998, at her home after a critical illness of four weeks. She was formerly of Orchard Drive, Graham.
A native of Big Rock, Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. Lois Dodson “Pete” Brown and the daughter of Mr. Thomas Lester and Mrs. Addie Bishop Lester, both deceased. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Graham.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ella Cumbee and Mrs. Marietta Jones, both of Summerville; a sister, Mrs. Vertie Fiste of Dayton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverside Baptist Church by the Rev. Curtis Oakley. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 Saturday evening, and at other times at the home of the granddaughter, Ms. Ellen Overson, 505 Mace Road, Mebane.
Memorials may be made to Riverside Baptist Church Senior Citizens, 1568 E. Harden St. Graham, N.C. 27253.

Mr. Roger C. Black
MEBANE - Mr. Roger Carlyle Black, 72, of 4210 Lynch Store Road, died at 7:10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at his home after an illness of three months.
A native of Moore County, he was the husband of Mrs. Doris Lynch Black, who survives, and the late Mrs. Louise Orr Black. He was the son of Mr. John Edgar Black and Mrs. Lucille Nunnery Black, both deceased. He began working with the Burlington Fire Department on Aug. 8, 1949, and was promoted to assistant chief in 1952, where he served until his appointment to chief in 1969. He served as the second paid fire chief in Burlington until his retirement Aug. 1, 1980. He was a member of the Burlington Masonic Lodge No. 721 AF&AM, the Burlington Shrine Club, the York Rite Bodies and the Amran Temple. He was a member of the D.C. Blue Hunting Club in Aberdeen and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Wicker Street Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Wendy Ruth Miller of Burlington; a son, Mr. John Mark Black of Gibsonville; a stepdaughter Mrs. Janet Thompson of Mebane; a stepson, Mr. Murray Lynch of Mebane; a sister, Mrs. Sharon Gero of Greensboro; four grandchildren; and five step grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wicker Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Love, pastor, and the Rev. Todd Martin. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 8:30 this evening.

Mr. Jim Overbey Jr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. William “Jim” Newton Overbey Jr., 66, of 520 Robertson St., died at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
A native of Durham County, he was the husband of Mrs. Glenda Norris Overbey, who survives, and the son of Mr. William Newton Overbey Sr. and Mrs. Annie Parrish Overbey, both deceased. He was retired from Copland Fabrics and was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, where he was a church trustee.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three daughters, Mrs. Ellen Reid and Mrs. Robin Leonard, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Linda Ferguson of Liberty; two sons, Mr. Dennis Overbey and Mr. Dana Overbey, both of Burlington; four sisters, Mrs. Sadie Hall, Mrs. Frances Saunders and Mrs. Jean Hundley, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Pat McGhee of Durham; a brother, Mr. Herman Overbey of Graham; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Marie Moffitt.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Deep Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. James Moon, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the Missionary Fund of Deep Creek Baptist Church.

Mrs. Anna O. Heaton
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Anna Lou Odom Heaton, 85, of 2628 Evergreen Lane, died at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at White Oak Manor after 20 years of failing health.
A native of Hendersonville, she was the wife of Mr. George Benson Heaton, who died in 1991, and was the daughter of Mr. James W. Odom and Mrs. Mamie C. Odom, both deceased. She was a retired sales person with Freeze Northgate Pharmacy in Hendersonville. She was a member of Balfour Baptist Church in Hendersonville.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kay Heaton McCarthy of Burlington; a son, Mr. Harold E. Heaton of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel O. Staggs of Burlington and Mrs. Fredericka O. Barrick of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Shepherd Memorial Park in Hendersonville.
There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Laura W. George
MEBANE - Mrs. Laura Wilkerson George, 71, of 506 N. Fifth St., died at 6:43 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at her home after an illness of two months.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Samuel Donald George, and the daughter of Mr. Banks Holt Wilkerson Sr., and Mrs. Myrtle Hinshaw Wilkerson, both deceased. She was retired from Kingsdown Inc. in Mebane. A member of Mebane Presbyterian Church, she served as an elder and was an active member of the Chancel Choir and Presbyterian Women, where she received honorary life membership.
Survivors include two daughters Dr. Sherron K. George of Austin, Texas, and Ms. Cindy G. McKey of Jackson, Miss; two sons, Mr. S. Donald George and Dr. Marshall A. George, both of New York City; three sisters, Mrs. Ruby West of Woodstock, Georgia, and Mrs. Rebecca Poe and Mrs. Rosa Flynt, both of Mebane; four bothers, Mr. Wallace Wilkerson of Mebane, Mr. Leo Wilkerson of Winston-Salem, Mr. Steven Wilkerson of Fancy Gap, Va., and Mr. Woodrow Wilkerson of Burlington; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Edith W. Thomas and Mrs. Louise Utsman Smith; and two brothers, Mr. Banks Holt Wilkerson Jr., and Mr. Paul T. Wilkerson.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Mebane Presbyterian Church by Dr. Sherron K. George. Burial will in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will be the home.

Mrs. Louise W. Burke
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Louise W. Burke, 84, of 1522 W. Davis St., died at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at her home.

Mr. Charles Storey
CARY - Mr. Charles Storey, 65, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 6, 1998.
A native of Blowing Rock, he was the husband of Mrs. Simone G. Evers Storey, who survives. He grew up in Graham. He attended Mars Hill College and received a bachelor of arts degree in voice from Furman University and a master of sacred music degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as the director of the Church Music Department of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina since 1987 and prior to that, he served as associate in the Church Music Department for 10 years. Previously he served as Minister of Music at Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, First Baptist Church in Kannapolis and Temple Baptist Church in Wilmington.
Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Ellen B. McClay of Angier and Mrs. Carol S. Clark of Fuquay Varina; a son, Mr. C. David Storey of Fuquay Varina; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Nancy E. Pope of Lumberton; two stepsons, Mr. Jerry Evers of Charlotte and Mr. Frank Evers of Salisbury; a sister, Ms. Dare Williams of Kingsland, Ga.; two brothers, Mr. C. Max Storey of Winston-Salem and Mr. B. Jack Storey of Durham; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Cary.
The family will be at the church fellowship hall following the service.

Mr. Lynn W. Blackwell
DETROIT - Mr. Lynn Willie Blackwell, 65, died at 2:40 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, in Detroit after several months of failing health.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Blackwell, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Hallie Pennix Blackwell, who survives, and the late Mr. Albert Blackwell.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Burlington include two daughters; four sons; two sisters, the Rev. Irene E. Farrington and Mrs. Pauline Evans, both of Burlington; three brothers, Dr. Larry Blackwell of Greensboro, the Rev. Delbert Blackwell and Mr. Eugene Blackwell, both of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Swanson Funeral Home in Detroit.
