Mr. Shields C. Maynard
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Mr. Sheilds Cramer Maynard, 89, of Bakersfield, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, in Bakersfield.
Born May 23, 1909, in High Point, he was the husband for 69 years to Mrs. Birdie Maynard, who survives, and the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Levi Maynard. He moved to Bakersfield in 1943. He worked for Shell Oil until his retirement in 1972.
Survivors other than his wife include three daughters, Mrs. Audrey Hobbs and Ms. Janet Rowe, both of Bakersfield, and Ms. Ruth Renfro of Ohio; three sons, Mr. Joe Maynard, Mr. Glen Maynard and Mr. Norman Maynard, all of Bakersfield; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other relatives in the Mebane area.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Myrtle Strickland and Ms. Blanche Snider; and one brother, Mr. Vance Robert Maynard.
A graveside service was conducted Sept. 26 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield by Pastor Danny Elliot.

Mrs. Ann P. Edwards
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Ann P. Edwards of 309 Peele St., died at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center, after 10 years of failing health, six weeks critical.
A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Judson Reid Edwards, and the daughter of Mr. Joe Marshall Perry and Mrs. Evelina Bradley Perry, both deceased. She was retired from textile manufacturing, and was a member of Powerline Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Bessie Faucette of the home; three half sisters, Mrs. Frances Everhart of Lexington, and Mrs. Hazeline Rudd and Mrs. Evelyn Smith, both of Burlington; and a half brother, Mr. J.M. Perry of Reidsville.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Bertha Cobb and Ms. Myrtle Perry; two brothers, Mr. James O. Perry and Mr. John Will Perry; and a half brother, Mr. Delmar Perry.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Tim Taylor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington one hour before the service and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Gladys B. Perkins
REIDSVILLE - Mrs. Gladys Bell Perkins, 92, of 240 Purcell Road, died at 9:10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at Greensboro Health and Rehabilitation Center.
A native of Cohoes, N.Y., she was the wife of the late Mr. Lester Warren Perkins, and the daughter of Mr. Albert Bell and Mrs. Ida Patterson Bell, both deceased. She was a member of Springwood Presbyterian Church and the Women’s Morning Circle. Before retirement, she was a member of Morningside Baptist Church in Pittsfield, Mass. She retired to Whitsett in 1972.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Kenneth Warren Perkins of Reidsville and Mr. Franklin Wallace Perkins of Northport, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Thelma B. Harrison of Virginia; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Robert Eugene Perkins.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at Springwood Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jonathan Freeman, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening.

Mr. Austin H. Clampitt
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. - Mr. Austin H. “Whitey” Clampitt, 76, of 912 Old Barnwell Road, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at Prividence Hospital in Columbia.
Born Sept. 27, 1922, in Alexandria, Mo., he was the husband of Mrs. Glenda Keck Clampitt, who survives, and the son of Mr. John J. Clampitt and Mrs. Gladys Marie Pucket Clampitt, both deceased. He was a paratrooper in the 101 st Airborne during World War II from January 1943 to October 1945. He received the Purple Heart for being wounded in Vagal, Holland in September 1944. He was in the first wave of 45 planes of men who jumped on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was an ironworker and started in business soon after the war and continued working up until his death. He was employed by Capitol City Erectors Inc. He was a 32 nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He attended Lexington Presbyterian Church in Columbia.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three daughters, Mrs. Sharon Boyd and Ms. Diana Clampitt, both of Quincy, Ill., and Miss Amber Clampett of the home; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Charesse Gerringer Gause of Irmo, S.C.; two stepsons, Mr. Sonny Gerringer and Mr. Glen Gerringer, both of Gilbert, S.C.; two grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church cemetery by Dr. Tommy Willis, pastor of Andrews Memorial Baptist Church.

Mrs. Brenda R. Miller
RALEIGH - Mrs. Brenda Reynolds Miller, 52, of 1908 Thropshire Drive, died at 1:40 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh after an illness of 10 days.
Born Nov. 8, 1945, in Alamance County, she was the wife Mr. Charles S. Miller, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Gilmer Reynolds and Mrs. Bernice Tester Reynolds, who both survive. She was employed by the Junior League of Raleigh and an accountant.
Survivors other than her husband of the home and parents of Burlington include two brothers, Mr. Don Reynolds of Burlington and Mr. Corkey Reynolds of Greensboro.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham.

Mr. Dennis G. Walker
BURLINGTON - Mr. Dennis Gerald Walker, 43, of 6043 N.C. 49 South, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at Friendship-Patterson Mill Road due to injuries received in an automobile accident.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Teresa Hyder Walker, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Ester May Walker, who survives, and the late Mr. Calvin Walker. He was employed by Keck Construction as a carpenter and attended Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church.
Survivor other than hi s wife of the home and mother of Graham include two sons, Mr. Scott Clinton Walker of Haw River and Mr. Jordan Hunter Walker of the home; and a sister, Mrs. Loretta Walker Rose of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church by Dr. Charles Adams, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Dallas Horne
DURHAM - Mr. Dallas McLendon Horne, 75, of 6121 Dellow St., died at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at his home after nine months of failing health. He was a former resident of Burlington.
A native of Durham County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Frances Turner Horne, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Donie Fisher Horne, who survives, and the late Mr. James M. Horne. He was retired from Tire King in Durham and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother include a son, Mr. Jerry Lane Horne of Durham; a sister, Mrs. Erma Bisvens of Salisbury; three brother, Mr. Donald Horne and Mr. Sam Horne, both of Burlington, and Mr. Harold Horne of Graham; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Laura W. George
MEBANE - Mrs. Laura Wilkerson George, 71, of 506 N. Fifth St., died at 6:43 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at her home after an illness of two months.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Samuel Donald George, and the daughter of Mr. Banks Holt Wilkerson Sr., and Mrs. Myrtle Hinshaw Wilkerson, both deceased. She was retired from Kingsdown Inc. in Mebane. A member of Mebane Presbyterian Church, she served as an elder and was an active member of the Chancel Choir and Presbyterian Women, where she received honorary life membership.
Survivors include two daughters Dr. Sherron K. George of Austin, Texas, and Ms. Cindy G. McKey of Jackson, Miss; two sons, Mr. S. Donald George and Dr. Marhsall A. George, both of New York City; three sisters, Mrs. Ruby West Woodstock of Georgia, and Mrs. Rebecca Poe and Mrs. Rosa Flynt, both of Mebane; four bothers, Mr. Wallace Wilkerson of Mebane, Mr. Leo Wilkerson of Winston-Salem, Mr. Steven Wilkerson of Fancy Gap, Va., and Mr. Woodrow Wilkerson of Burlington; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Edith W. Thomas and Mrs. Louise Utsman Smith; and two brothers, Mr. Banks Holt Wilkerson Jr., and Mr. Paul T. Wilkerson.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Mebane Presbyterian Church by Dr. Sharon K. George. Burial will in Oakwood Cemetery.

Ms. Brenda A. Holt
BURLIGNTON - Ms. Brenda Annette Holt of 320 W. Holt St., died Saturday, Oct.3, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical center after a long illness.
A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mrs. Sherdina Holt, who survives, and the late Mr. Alandrew Holt. She was disabled and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio. She was a member of New Covenant Holy Church, where she was a member of the Senior Choir.
Survivors other her mother of the home include two daughters, Miss La Tonya Z. Holt and Miss La Rissa Lynn Holt, both of Burlington; son, Mr. Chivaz D. Holt of Burlington; and two brothers, Mr. Barney Lee Holt and Mr. Ronald Lee Holt, both of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at New Covenant Holy Church by Bishop Harry Cohen, pastor. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
The family will be at the church 30 minutes before the service and at other times at the home.
Mr. Edward L. Smith
WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Edward Leonidas Smith, 86, of Monticello Drive, died Monday, Oct., 5, 1998, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 15, 1912, in Raleigh, he was the husband for 57 years to Mrs. Helen Louise Barney Smith, who survives, and the son of Mr. Lonnie Smith and Mrs. Eleanor Conn Smith, both deceased. He grew up in Apex and graduated in 1933 from Wake Forest College, where he was a cheerleader and an All-American debater. Following college, he taught high school in Mingo and Enfield. He was the principal of Enfield High School, coach of the basketball and football teams and was the town’s recreation director.
During World War II, he was employment manager for Goodyear Aircraft in Akron, Ohio. Following the war, he and his family moved back to Burlington. He was the first employee hired in the North Carolina Works of Western Electric. He was with Western Electric for 31 year in the Personnel and Labor Relations Departments, for several years serving as principal bargaining agent of the company and for labor contracts with the AFL-CIO and IBEW.
Before moving to Winston-Salem in 1961, he was active in the Burlington area in many church and community activities. He served as recorder’s Court Judge at Elon College, directed drama and musical productions and emceed many local and state events, including the Miss North Carolina Beauty Pageant. In August 1977 when he retired from the Winston-Salem Lexington Road Plant of Western Electric as Labor Relations Manger of the North Carolina Works, his No. 1 Employee number was retired also. Following retirement he spent several years as a consultant in labor relations in the Greensboro area. An active Mason, he held the offices of secretary-treasurer and chaplain of the Winston-Salem Pioneer Lodge No. 685. He was currently active in the King Swingers Senior Citizens Band and played drums at their weekly performance at the King Senior Citizens Center. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, where he had been a deacon, choir member and was a Sunday school teacher in the Baraca Class for the past 20 years. Survivors other than his wife include a daughter, Ms. Eleanor Smith Hartley of Florham Park, N.J.; a son, Mr. Edward Leonidas “Lon” Smith Jr. of Lawrenceville, N.J.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church by Dr. David Hughes. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park.
The family will be at Vogler and Sons Reynoda Chapel from 7 to 8 this evening,
