Mr. Lacy F. Weeks
RALEIGH - Mr. Lacy F. Weeks, 89, of Raleigh, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998.
A native of Sampson County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nell Weeks, who survives. He was a 1932 honors graduate of N.C. State College. He served as an agriculture teacher in Sampson County from 1934 to 1939 and as an assistant farm agent and later county farm agent in Duplin County from 1939 to 1952. He was director of field service and treasurer of Tobacco Associates Inc., from 1952 until his retirement in 1976. He was a former member of the Lions Club, a Mason and a member of Fairmont United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife include a daughter Mrs. Fred (Jean W.) Partin of Raleigh; two brothers, Mr. Clayton Weeks of Burlington and Mr. Mayon Weeks of Fayetteville; a sisters, Ms. Helen Whitfield of Newton Grove; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2p.m. Friday at Fairmont United Methodist Church. Entombment will be in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will be at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary’s Street, from 6 to 8 this evening.

Mr. Broadus Baucom
ELLERBE - Mr. James Broadus Baucom, 99, of Windsor House of Rockingham, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at Windsor House. He was a former resident of 1200 Firetower Road.
Born June 16, 1899 in Union County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Pauline Bennett Baucom and the late Mrs. Edna Love Baucom. He was the son of Mr. James Allen Baucom and Mrs. Abagail E. Helms Baucom. He was a barber in Rockingham before his retirement, and was a farmer. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Ellerbe, and attended McLean Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one son, Mr. Paul Baucom of Burlington; one daughter, Ms. Del Bidelspach of Palmyra, Pa.; a stepson, Mr. W. Emerson Love Jr. of Rockingham; one stepdaughter, Ms. Mary L. Harris of Ellerbe; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Keith Baucom.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carter Funeral Home, Ellerbe Chapel by the Rev. John Muse. Burial will be in Ellerbe Cemetery.
The family will be at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe from 7 to 8:30 Friday evening.
Mr. Harry Madden
BURLINGTON - Mr. Harry Lee Madden, 68, of 870 Willie Pace Road, died at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at his home.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Alice King Madden who survives, and the son of Mr. Arthur A. Madden and Mrs. Robena Debrula Madden, both deceased. He was retired from the N.C. Highway Department after 23 years, and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ where he was a moderator of the church, choir member, former deacon and superintendent of the Sunday school department.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include one daughter, Mrs. Joyce M. Sally of Burlington; one son, Mr. Joey Lee Madden of Burlington; one brother, Mr. Lawrence Madden of Burlington; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Scott Madden.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Bethel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Paul Stennett and the Rev. Homer Frye. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

The Rev. Jeneus Torain
The funeral for the Rev. Jeneus H. Torain will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Zion AME Church by the Rev. Larnie G. Horton Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Mount Zion AME Church, 5124 N.C. Highway 86, Hillsborough from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Brenda K. Torain of the home; two sons, Mr. Willie J. Torain of Hillsborough and Mr. Larry W. Torain of Mebane; one sister, Ms. Satherine Leath of Burlington; one brother, Mr. Harvey Torain of Pleasant Grove; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Miss Margaret Brown
BURLINGTON - Miss Margaret Ethel Brown, 89, of 208 Gilmer St., died at 5:25 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
A native of Guilford County, she was the daughter of Mr. Percy H. Brown and Mrs. Mattie McDaniel Brown, both deceased. A graduate of Elon College, she taught in the Alamance County School System in the high school level for 44 years. She was a charter member of Alamance County Home Economics Club and a member of the National Education Association, the North Carolina Association of Retired Teachers, and the North Carolina Education Association. She was serving as correspondence secretary of the Fidelis RHO Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa at the time of her death. She was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church and a church circle.
Survivors include a nephew.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Pauline W. Brown Faucette.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by Dr. William Simpson, pastor of Front Street United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 2 to 3 Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Samuel C. Hiatt
MEBANE - Mr. Samuel C. “Sam” Hiatt, 76, of 3717 Barnett Road, died at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after six years of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Marlboro County, S.C., he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Ruth Self Hiatt, who survives, and the son of Mr. Gurley Hiatt and Mrs. Clara Crowley Byrd Hiatt, both deceased. He was retired from Textile Manufacturing and the Times-News. He was a Baptist.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Kay Williams of the home; six grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and five great-step grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Graham Memorial Park by the Rev. Rainey Qualls Sr., pastor of Landmark Baptist Church, and the Rev. Rainey Qualls Jr., assistant pastor of Landmark Baptist Church. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

Mr. James McCulloch
BURLINGTON - Mr. James “Jim” Huss McCulloch, 59, of 1519 Durham St., died at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after one month of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Hallie Murray McCulloch, who survives, and the son of Mr. Benjamin Maynard McCulloch and Mrs. Jessie Huss McCulloch, both deceased. He was formerly employed by Stadler Hams in Elon College and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elon College, where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sisters, Mrs. Carlyle (Ruth) Craven of Raleigh and Mrs. Cliff (Becky) Berrier of Greensboro.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Randall Innes, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Elon College, and the Rev. Eric O. Murray, retired Methodist minister. Burial will be in Stony Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Mrs. Sue Phillips
LEXINGTON, S.C. - Mrs. Nannie Sue Phillips, 79, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998.
A native of Royston, Ga., she was the wife of the late Mr. Sam Jones Phillips Jr. and the daugher of Mr. Joe Ballenger and Mrs. Matt Ballenger, both deceased.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Patricia Brown of Blythewood, S.C.; four sons, Mr. Joe R. Phillips of Graham, Mr. James T. Phillips of Sanford, Mr. Robert W. “Bob” Phillips of Lexington and Mr. Benjamin R. “Ben” Phillips of Gaston, S.C.; three sisters, Ms. Naomi Ayers, Ms. Polly Bowers and Ms. Christine Correira, all of Royston; two brothers, Mr. John Ballenger of Elberton, Ga., and Mr. Nelson Ballenger of Royston; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, S.C. Entombment will be in Woodridge Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Mr. Theodore Crespo Jr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. Theodore F. “Ted” Crespo Jr., 69, of Burlington for the past two years, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, in Birmingham, Ala., after one year of failing health, three days critical.
A native of Baton Rouge, La., he was the husband of Mrs. Jeanette Crespo, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Alvina Crespo, who survives, and the late Mr. Theodore F. Crespo. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Association, the Service Corp. of Retired Executive and was a lay prison minister. He was the owner and operator of several small businesses in the Los Angeles and Birmingham areas, from which he retired. He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church in Birmingham.
Survivors other than his wife of Helena, Ala., and mother of Cook Springs, Ala., include three daughters, Mrs. Lynette Clark of Azusa, Calif., Mrs. Cheryl Eppard of Glendora, Calif., Mrs. Darlene Repp of Centreville, Ohio; a son, Mr. Theodore F. Crespo III of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Delores DeNova of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Junita Crowson of Pell City, Ala.; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Foydel Erickson.
A memorial service was conducted Monday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Burial was in Jewella cemetery in Shreveport, La.
Mr. Gene Ridner
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. - Mr. Gene Ridner, 69, First Sergeant, U.S. Army, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at his home after an illness of two years. He was a longtime resident of Neptune Beach, Fla., before moving to Orange Park, Fla.
A native of Kentucky, he was the husband for 45 years of Mrs. Silvaleen Ridner, who survives. While serving in the U.S. Army, he saw action in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. After retiring from the U.S. Army, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired after 17 years of service.
Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Ms. Joyce Ridner of Green Cove Springs and Ms. Janie McAvoy of Burlington; a son, Mr. Jon Ridner of Gainesville, Fla.; a brother, Mr. Hewerl Cordell of Washington State; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Va.
The family will be at Clay Funeral Home from 6 to 8 Thursday evening.

Mrs. Gertrude Faircloth
GRAHAM - Mrs. Gertrude Norris Faircloth, 83, of 404 N. Main St., died at 8:32 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after a sudden illness.
A native of Sampson County, she was the wife of the late Mr. John David Faircloth and the daughter of Mr. Harmon J. Norris and Mrs. Berta Herring Norris, both deceased. She was retired from Alamance County Hospital. She was a member of Garland Baptist Church and attended First Baptist Church in Graham.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Melvin of Graham and Mrs. James (Faye) Blake of Greenville; a sister, Mrs. Beaulah N. Smith of Fayetteville; a brother, Mr. George W. Norris of Garland; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Howard Thompson, pastor of Burlington Assembly of God. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
