Mr. Aaron I. Athey
SPENCER - Mr. Aaron Isaac “Abe” Athey, 75, died at 10:50 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at his home after five years of failing health.
Born May 2, 1923, in Rowan County, he was the son of Mr. Frank Isaac Athey and Mrs. Bertie Elizabeth Dunn Athey, both deceased. He was educated in Rowan County Schools and was a retired weaver for Burlington Industries. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include three daughters, Ms. Donna Athey Teslovic of Colorado Springs, Colo., Ms. Gail Athey Bohley of Burlington and Ms. Brenda Athey Wagoner of Washington, D.C.; three sons, Mr. Jonathan Kelly Athey of Roxboro, Mr. Walter Holder of Burlington and Mr. Michael Watkins of Salisbury; two sisters, Mrs. Zelma Athey Redwine of Salisbury and Ms. Mary Trexler of Norfolk, Va.; a brother, Mr. Cordell Athey of Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Norma Darlene Athey, and a son, Mr. Ronnie Athey.
The body will be cremated. There will be no visitation or service.

Mrs. Shirley Thompson
YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Shirley “Peggy” Long Thompson, 59, of Suncrest, Apt. 214, ldied Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va.
Born Jan. 27, 1939, in Mecklenburg County, Va., she was the wife of Mr. James Thompson, who survives, and the daughter of the late Ms. Robena Long Jones. She was employed by Villines Rest Home in Hillsborough.
Survivors other than her husband of Roxboro, include five daughters, Mrs. Brenda Yvonne Glass of Yanceyville, Ms. Jeannie Vernee Jefferies, Ms. Carol Lisa Jefferies and Ms. Sharon Theresa Jefferies, all of Newark, N.J., and Ms. Juliet Thompson of Roxboro; four sons, Mr. James L. Rone of Blanch, Mr. Donnie Ray Long of Durham, Mr. Ronnie Leon Jeffries of Newark and Mr. Darryl Thompson of Roxboro; a stepson, Mr. Ricky Thompson; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Southern of Burlington and Mrs. Julia Johnson of Indian Head, Md.; a brother, Mr. Wilbert Jones Jr. of Durham; 20 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted a 1 p.m. Thursday at Beulah Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph Harris. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Fulton Funeral Home from 7 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Brenda Yvonne Glass, 140 Barber Shop Drive, Yanceyville.
Mr. Guy T. Wilkinson
MEBANE - Mr. Guy Thompson Wilkinson, 66, of 5707 Five Sisters Court, Fayetteville, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Walter E. Apple
REIDSVILLE - Mr. Walter Everette Apple, 75, of 4002 Ashland Road, died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 13, 1998, at his home.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Maggie Harris Apple, who survives, and the son of Mr. Elisha Apple and Mrs. Pat Walker Apple, both deceased. He was a retired carpenter and a Baptist. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the 30th Infantry Division, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was a Member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Walter Terrell Apple of Elon College; three sisters, Ms. Mary A. Manley of Caswell County, Ms. Nina A. Wicker of Sanford and Ms. Lela A. McKinney of Reidsville; two brothers, Mr. Tony D. Apple of Reidsville and Mr. George A. Apple of Burlington; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Eva McKinney Waynick; and two brothers, Mr. Robert L. Apple and Mr. Tommy Walker Apple.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Apple Family cemetery on Ashland Road.

Mr. G. Lewis Bradley
MEBANE - Mr. George Lewis Bradley, 71, of 207 E. Green St., died at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Louise H. Bradley, who survives, and the son of Mr. Ellis Anderson Bradley and Mrs. Jane Kimbro Bradley, both deceased. He was the retired owner of G. Lewis Bradley Insurance Agency. He was a life member of Bingham Lodge 272 AF&AM of Mebane. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Mebane.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Miss Jo Ellen Bradley of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Janet Perry and Ms. Leone Bradley, both of Burlington; and two brothers, Mr. James Roy Bradley of Mebane and Mr. Ellis A. Bradley of Orlando, Fla.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by Dr. Terry Farmer, pastor of First Baptist Church of Mebane, and the Rev. Charles Fleshman, associate pastor of First Baptist Church of Mebane. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The Lodge will open for emergent communication at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7:30 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Grace Brewer Moody, 62, of 5513 Pagetown Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998.

The Rev. Daniel Stewart
BURLINGTON - The Rev. Daniel David Stewart, 59, of 1239 Pollard Ave., died at 3:39 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after an illness of seven months.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Violet Mae Ward Stewart, who survives, and the son of Mr. John Wesley Stewart and Mrs. Edna Merritt Stewart, both deceased. He was employed by Commercial Levin and was pastor of West Hill Baptist Church in Hillsborough for 10 years. He was a member of West Hill Baptist Church, and a former member of Wicker Street Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and a deacon.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Torri Danine Lambert of Burlington; four sons, Mr. Danny Ray Stewart, Mr. David Michael “Mike” Stewart, both of Burlington, Mr. Robert Dwayne Stewart of Ocracoke and Mr. Tracy Dane Stewart of Hillsborough; two sisters, Mrs. Shelba Ward and Mrs. Carolyn McAdams, both of Burlington; four brothers, Mr. John Wesley Stewart Jr. of Snow Camp, Mr. Charlie Thomas Stewart, Mr. Hal Merritt “Red” Stewart and Mr. James Calvin Stewart, all of Burlington, and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at West Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Love, pastor of Wicker Street Baptist Church, and the Rev. Todd Martin, interim pastor of West Hill Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mrs. Virginia Clyburn
MOORESVILLE - Mrs. Virginia Carrie Warren Clyburn, 72, of 1005 Vance St., Greensboro, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at her home after a long illness.
Born July 17, 1926, in Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Conlest P. Clyburn, and the daughter of Mr. James Robert Warren and Mrs. Annie Bell Warren, both deceased. She was a member of The Greater Deliverance Tabernacle Fellowship Church in Greensboro, serving as Fellowship Mother and Prayer Warrior for many years. She was a Prayer Warrior at Deliverance Tabernacle Church in Hillsborough in her younger years.
Survivors include two daughters, the Rev. Conlest Clyburn-Jones of the home and the Rev. Therethia Devon Jones of Mebane; three sons, Elder James Alfred Nixon of Haw River, Ret. Sgt. Randy Pearlee Clyburn of Orlando, Fla., and Bishop Michael Leon Clyburn of New Haven, Conn.; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at The Greater Deliverance Tabernacle Fellowship Church, 600 E. Washington St., Mebane, by Bishop Michael L. Clyburn. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
The family will be at the home of the Rev. Therethia Jones, 607 Lancaster Road, Mebane, and at the home of the Rev. Conlest Jones, 1005 Vance St., Greensboro.

Mrs. Elizabeth B. Smith
HUNTERSVILLE - Mrs. Elizabeth Blythe Smith, 93, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at University Hospital.
Born Feb. 10, 1905, in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter, Mr. Franklin Brevard Blythe and Mrs. Mary Alice Dunn Blythe, both deceased. She was a member of the Huntersville Presbyterian Church, Women of the Church, Circle No. 2 and the Huntersville Presbyterian Friendship Sunday School Class. She was retired from Winchester Surgical Supply as a salesperson.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. P.W. (Dorothy S.) Scott of Mebane and Miss Linda B. Smith of Carrboro; a sister, Mrs. Rebecca Rhodes of Mooresville; two brothers, Mr. Edwin Blythe and Mr. Harry Blythe, both of Huntersville; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Huntersville Presbyterian Church by Dr. Michael Armistead. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Almond Raymer and McConnell Funeral Home in Huntersville from 7 to 8:30 this evening.

Mr. Dwight W. Totten
REIDSVILLE - Mr. Dwight Wilson Totten, 74, of 2309 Belmont Drive, died Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, 1998.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nancy Young Totten, who survives. He retired as a detective sergeant with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington D.C., He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the Reidsville Elks Lodge No. 1723.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mr. Kim (Teresa Totten) Smith of Chapel Hill; three sisters, Ms. Frances Cobb of Reidsville, Ms. Ruby Perkins of Burlington and Ms. Nancy Cobb of Ruffin; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Camp Springs United Methodist Church.
The family will be at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Mr. Paul R. Hoffner Sr.
GIBSONVILLE - Mr. Paul Rothrock Hoffner Sr., 63, of 305 Church St., died at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, of leukemia after three and one-half years.
Born Jan. 30, 1935, in Salisbury, he was the husband for 45 years of Mrs. Sylvia Miller Hoffner who survives, and the son of Mr. James L. Hoffner and Mrs. Florence Rothrock Hoffner Fleming, both deceased.
He was a graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury. He received a degree in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the U.S. Armed Forces, 82nd Airborne Division, MP Company, from 1954 to 1956.
An employee of Laboratory Corporation of America, formerly Bio-Medical Reference Laboratories and Roche Bio-Medical Laboratories, since 1970, he served the company as senior vice president of sales, marketing, pathological services, national accounts and special projects. He served Hoffmann-LaRoche as assistant vice president of sales after joining Bio-Medical Reference Labs as its first and only salesman. Prior to 1970 he was employed with Lloyd Brothers Pharmaceuticals, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals and Bio-Dynamics Inc.
He and his family lived in Raleigh from 1960-1975, at which time he was a member of the Raleigh Jaycees, AMBUCS, and St. Giles Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Gibsonville United Methodist Church..
Survivors other than his wife include two sons, Mr. Paul R. Hoffner Jr. of Charlotte and Mr. Christopher J. Hoffner of Salisbury; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Saundra) Magee of Charlotte and Mrs. Gregory (Stephanie) Chen of Winston-Salem; one sister, Mrs. Joseph (Martha) Casey of Salisbury; and seven grandchildren.
The family will be at the home.
A memorial celebration of life service will be held at the Gibsonville United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday by Dr. John Franklin Howard.
