Mrs. Laura C. Sparks
GREENSBORO - Mrs. Laura Calhoun Sparks, 84, of Heritage Greens Retirement Community died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
A native of Fort Mitchell, Ala., she was the wife of the late Rev. Richard R. Sparks Sr. Retiring after serving seven churches, the couple performed three periods of missionary service before settling in Greensboro. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Summerfield.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kay Moses of Ocala, Fla.; a son, Mr. Richard. R. Sparks Jr. of Burlington; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Summerfield by Dr. Deryl Holliday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Louetta S. Headen
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Louetta S. Headed died at midnight Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998.
She was the wife of Mr. Mitchell Headen, who survives.
Survivors other than her husband of Charlotte include relatives in the Graham area.
The funeral will be held at noon Friday in Charlotte.
Mr. William Kehler Jr.
MARION - Mr. William J. Kehler, 67 Jr., died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at his home.
A native of Girardsville, Pa., he was the husband of Mrs. Helen Garrison Kehler, who survives, and the son of Mr. William James Kehler and Mrs. Martha Williams Kehler, both deceased. He was retired plant manager of C.E. Airpreheater and was the owner of Kehler’s Store. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Joppa Masonic Lodge No. 401.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Laurie K. Freeman of Nebo and Mrs. Debra K. Laughridge of Highlands; three sons, Mr. William J. Kehler III of Marion, Mr. David W. Kehler of Nebo and Mr. Donald E. Kehler of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral was conducted Sunday at Westmoreland Funeral Home Chapel in Marion by Mr. Jim Frost. Burial with Masonic rites was conducted by Joppa Masonic Lodge No. 401 at McDowell Memorial Park.

Mr. Marvin Murray Sr.
GRAHAM - Mr. Marvin Denson Murray Sr., 78, of 4655 Coggins Road, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
A native of Chatham County, he was the son of Ms. Thelma S. Murray, who survives. He was retired from Triangle Paving Co., where he served as a truck driver for 26 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of American Legion Liberty Post 81 and Bennett Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Sondra M. Hammer of Asheboro; three sons, Mr. Johnny Murray and Mr. Denny Murray, both of Graham, and Mr. Tim Murray of Mebane; two stepdaughters, Ms. Shirley Highfill of Baltimore and Ms. Lou Ann Mosack of Charlotte; a stepson, Mr. Billy Highfill of Charlotte; two sisters, Ms. Louise Garner of Rural Hill and Ms. Annie Belle Brady of McLeansville; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m Wednesday at Bennett Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Strider and the Rev. Larry Janey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home in Ramseur from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Charley M. Parker
BURLINGTON – Mrs. Charley Mae Parker, of 635 Holly St., died at 10:40 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Oxford, she was the wife of the late Mr. Hillard R. Parker and the daughter of Mr. Frederick Wood and Ms. Mattiew Marie Garrett. She was a retired school teacher and a member of the Eastern Star, Alamance Chapter No. 444, E.L. Jebel Court No. 48, Daughter of Isis, past recorder secretary, James T. Diggs Assembly No. 308, Order of the Golden Circle Loyal Lady Secretary, LaSertoma Club, Senior Citizen Sewing Class, ACC, Shaw University, Burlington / Graham Alumni Club, NEA and North Carolina Teachers Association. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist church in Clarksville, Va., and First Baptist Church, Apple St., Burlington, where she was a member of the Missionary Circle No. 3 and First Baptist Bible Class No. 2.
Survivors include a foster son, Mr. James H. Bowers of Charlotte; a brother, Mr. Carter G. Wood of Baltimore; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth W. Fuller of Bloomfield, Conn., and Mrs. Virginia W. Bowers of Clarksville, Va.; and a foster grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Frederick Wood and Mr. Donald Wood; and two sisters, Ms. Mattie M. Wood and Ms. Lillian Wood.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Apple St., by the Rev. R. W. Styles. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

GRAHAM – Mr. Jessie Morris, 69, of 1021 Gant Road, died at 12:44 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
A native of Mecklenberg, Va., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Gilda Gray Tant Morris, and the son of Mr. Dillard Morris and Mrs. Jessie Thomas Morris, both deceased. He was a retired textile employee and a Baptist.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Crystal Goodman and Mrs. Sheila Janey, both of Graham, and Mrs. Frances M. Rumple of Burlington; three sons, Mr. Steve Morris of Tabor City and Mr. Ray Morris and Mr. Richard Morris, both of Graham; two sisters, Mrs. Lula Mae Hooper of Ebony, Va., and Mrs. Shelby Jean Mills of Bracy, Va.; three brothers, Mr. William T. Morris of Graham, Mr. Robert Morris of Southill, Va., and Mr. Walter B. Morris of Ebony, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Thomas Morris and Mr. Milton Morris.

GRAHAM – Ms. Gevena M. “Jean” Vance, 61, of 7-D Cates Circle, died at 11:05 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a year of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Wyoming County, W.Va., she was the daughter of Mr. Isaac Vance and Mrs. Garnet Rose Oglesby, both deceased. She was a retired textile employee and a Baptist.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. James (Diane) Scott of Elon College, Mrs. David (Renee) Perry of Pittsboro and Mrs. Ricky (Dale) Perry of the home; two sons, Mr. James B. Blaylock of Burlington and Mr. Michael E. Blaylock of South Carolina; a sister, Ms. Mary Ann Vance of Graham; a stepbrother, Mr. Ronnie Oglesby of New Mexico; ten grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and one great-granchild.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Graham Memorial Park by the Rev. R.E.L. Moser, Methodist minister.

Mr. William Barnhardt
BURLINGTON – Mr. William L. “Mr. Bill” Barnhardt, 69, of 330 Highland Ave., died at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center after six months of failing health, six weeks critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Barbara Paul Barnhardt and the son of Mr. Gurley Dameron Barnhardt Sr. and Mrs. Lillie Blanche Wagoner Barnhardt, both deceased. He was a retired employee of Burlington Coat Factory and and U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, for which he received the Purple Heart. He was a Methodist.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Candace B. Simpson, Miss Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Barnhardt and Miss Linda A. Barnhardt, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Debbie B. Huey of Mebane; two sisters, Mrs. Amy B. “Betty Lou” Forbis of Burlington and Mrs. Nancy “Peggy” B. Allen of Knightdale; two brothers, Mr. Gurley D. Barnhardt Jr. of Staunton, Va., and Mr. Howard C. Barnhardt of Burlington; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Virginia B. Rabey and Mrs. Helen B. Rook; three brothers, Mr. Charles E. Barnhardt, Mr. Raymond G. Barnhardt and Mr. James T. “Fuzzy” Barnhardt.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Bruce Ritter Jr., pastor of Christian Life Center.

Mr. William Lawson Jr.
BURLINGTON – Mr. William C. Lawson Jr., 77, of 1257 Sandy Cross Road, died at 5:10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, at his home after three years of failing health, three weeks critical.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mabel Fletcher Lawson, who survives, and the son of Mr. William C. Lawson Sr. and Mrs. Bessie Riddle Lawson, both deceased. He was a retired from AT&T as a quality controller. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II; a life member of the VFW, Post 1920; a life member of DAV Chapter, Burlington; a life member of the Air Force Association, Triad Chapter; The American Legion Post, Chapel Hill; and a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Frances Lawson Braxton of Graham and Mrs. Sandra Ann Sexton of Pittsboro; two sons, Mr. Steven David Lawson and Mr. Andy Dwayne Lawson, both of Graham; a stepson, Mr. Gale Corvin Fletcher of Burlington; six grandchildren; three step grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; and six great-step grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Reid Dickens and Elder John Lee. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mrs. Margaret F. Payne
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Margaret Fields Payne, 77, of 1625-G, Morningside Drive, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after 18 months of failing health and a critical illness of one day.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of Mr. Paul W. Payne who died in 1958, and the daughter of Mr. Lesley Fields and Mrs. Cora Bell Prevo Fields, both deceased. She was a retired receptionist at Mewborn Eye Clinic. She was a charter member of Peoples Memorial Christian Church and a member of the Macy May Bible Class.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Peggy P. Fernandez of Tempe, Ariz.; one son, Mr. Randall Payne of Graham; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Stanley of Kinston and Mrs. Elaine Reep of Greensboro; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Ricky Lee Payne; and two brothers, Mr. Bill Fields and Mr. Jessie Fields.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Peoples Memorial Christian Church by the Rev. C. Max Allman, pastor, and Dr. Tommy Richardson, pastor of Bible Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at the home of the son, 2553 Woods Lane, Graham.

Mrs. Lou Poe Allen
HAW RIVER - Mrs. Lou Poe Allen, 87, of 329 Chris St., died at 7:38 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Alamance county, she was the daughter of Mr. William Poe and Mrs. Allie Keck Poe, and was retired from Cannon Mills. She was a member of Haw River Christian Church.
Survivors include one son, Mr. Charles B. Allen of Haw River; two sisters, Mrs. Della Gentry of Elon College and Mrs. Alma Scroggs of Mebane; and one brother, Mr. Edgar Allen Poe of Burlington.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Long’s Chapel United Church of Christ cemetery by the Rev. James Moon, pastor of Deep Creek Baptist Church.
There will be no visitation. The family will be at the cemetery after the service, and at other times at the home of the son, 325 Chris St., Haw River.
