Mr. Harold Lee Cohen
GREENSBORO - Mr. Harold Lee Cohen, 61, of 705 Woodlake Drive, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at his home.
A native of Rockingham County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nancy Helton Cohen, who survives. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Gospel Light United Holy Church.
Survivors other than his wife include a son, Mr. Isaac Lee Cohen of the home; two daughters, Ms. Desiree C. Allen of Durham and Ms. Bernadette Cohen-Harris of Atlanta; two brothers, Bishop Harry L. Cohen of Burlington and Dr. James R. Cohen Sr. of Eden; and three sisters, the Rev. Carol Robertson of Eden, Mrs. Doris Harbor of Stoneville and Ms. Mary E. Lawrence of Atlanta.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Eden. Burial will be in Eden Gardens Cemetery.
Perry-Spencer Funeral Home in Eden is in charge of arrangements.
Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home in Burlington provided local information.

Mrs. Carolyn Moore
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Carolyn McAdams Moore, 79, of 2411 Pineway Drive, died at 9:25 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Twin Lakes Center after an illness of six months.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Lawrence T. "Bud" Moore and the daughter of Mr. Eugene E. McAdams and Mrs. Jessie Long McAdams, both deceased. She was owner of Trollinger Florist and a former member and past president of the Burlington Service League. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington.
Survivors include a brother, Mr. Coy McAdams of Graham.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ione M. Morris, and three brothers, Mr. William E. McAdams, Mr. James R. McAdams and Mr. Hal L. McAdams.
The funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by Dr. Charles Williams, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington one hour before the service, and at other times at the home of Coy McAdams of 513 Paris St., Graham.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Mr. George F. Sawyer
GRAHAM - Mr. George Franklin Sawyer, 86, of 4731 N.C. 54, died at 12:10 a.m. Monday, July 13, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington after three years of failing health, two days critical.
A native of Randolph County, he was the husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Shore Sawyer and the son of Mr. Samuel Elwood Sawyer and Mrs. Jennie Gray Sawyer, both deceased. He was retired from Associated Transport and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Slaughter of Graham; and two brothers, Mr. Arthur Sawyer of Graham and Mr. James Sawyer of Haw River; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Salem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Benji Killey, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 4471 Salem Church Road, Haw River, N.C. 27258.

Mrs. Inez P. Mateo
WILMINGTON, Calif. - Mrs. Inez Phillips Mateo, 65, of 617 Wilmington Blvd., died at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 13, 1998, at San Pedro Penninsular Hospital in San Pedro, Calif., after a long illness, 15 days critical.
A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of Mr. Charles Mateo, who died in 1996, and the daughter of Robert Pleasant Phillips and Mrs. Dollie Powell Phillips, both deceased. She grew up in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School in 1951.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Buck (Sarah) Stanfield of Burlington and Mrs. Fred (Dolly Lea) Johnson of Graham; four brothers, Mr. M. Holland Phillips, Mr. Joe T. Phillips, Mr. Jimmie D. Phillips and Mr. Othal G. Phillips, all of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Arlona Phillips and Ms. Sylvia Phillips, and three brothers, Mr. Robert W. Phillips, Mr. M. Calvin Phillips and Mr. P. Huelon Phillips.
The body will be cremated.
Nepona Society of California is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Mr. John M. Turner
BURLINGTON - Mr. John Mack Turner of 5755 N.C. 62 North, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at his home after a long illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Gracetta Williamson Turner, and the son of Mr. James Monroe Turner and Mrs. Beatrice Enoch Turner, both deceased. He was former manager of a Winn Dixie Store in Greensboro. He was a 33rd Degree Mason, member of Khalif Temple No. 144, Invincible Lodge No. 251, Greensboro Consistory No. 106 and Grand Inspector General. He was a member of Union Chapel United Church of Christ.
Survivors other than his wife include a daughter, Miss Joy Marietta Turner of the home; a son, Mr. John Marcus Turner of Norfolk, Va.; five sisters, Mrs. Nacala T. Mitchell of Los Angeles, Mrs. Elsie Turner of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Bobbi Floyd of Simi Valley, Calif., Ms. Joyce T. Charleston of Charlotte and Mrs. Linda Fuller of Bradford, Mass.; and three brothers, Mr. James Turner, Mr. Horace Turner and Mr. Keith Turner, all of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Union Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Ervin Milton, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the church 30 minutes before the service, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Bluebell Downey
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Mrs. Bluebell "B.B." Morningstar Downey of South Boston, died Monday, July 13, 1998.
She was the wife of the late Mr. Willard M. Downey.
Survivors include a sister, Ms. Margie M. Meeler of Durham; a brother, Mr. J.W. Morningstar Jr. of Mecklenburg County, Va.; a half sister, Ms. Phyllis M. Moore of Burlington; and a half brother, Mr. Dewey Morningstar of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Mrs. Nell L. Clapp
WINSTON-SALEM - Mrs. Nell Loy Clapp, 80, of 2765 Farmbrook Road, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Born Aug. 17, 1917, in Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Jack W. Clapp, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Milton Loy and Mrs. Mamie Malone Loy. She graduated from Elon College and taught school for 14 years. She was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include three daughters, Ms. Bunny Cummings, Ms. Susan Clapp and Ms. Betsy Hamilton, all of Winston-Salem; a son, Mr. Butch Clapp; a sister, Ms. Helen Hartman of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Dick Loy of Siler City; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at noon Tuesday at Highland Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Stephen McCutchan and the Rev. Maggi Henderson.
The family will receive friends following the service.
Memorials may be made to Highland Presbyterian Church, 2380 Cloverdale Ave., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

Mr. Billy T. Belton
BURLINGTON - Mr. Billy Thomas "Sonny" Belton, 62, of 154 Boone Road, died at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 10, 1998, at his home after a brief illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Jean Saunders Belton, who survives, and the son of Mr. Dewey Belton and Mrs. Mary Page Belton, both deceased. He was a retired self-employed truck driver for Spartan Trucking and a member of Lakeview United Church of Christ.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include one son, Mr. Perry Thomas Belton of Burlington; one daughter, Mrs. Rhonda B. Webster of Burlington; one sister, Mrs. Violet Priddy of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Richard Belton of Burlington and Mr. Harold Belton of Graham; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Lakeview United Church of Christ by the Rev. Reid Dickens, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Ms. Josephine Byrd
HILLSBOROUGH - Ms. Josephine Byrd, 76, of Hillsborough died Friday, July 10, 1998, at Triangle Hospice Facility.
Born July 5, 1922 in Wake Forest, she was the wife of Mr. Floyd Byrd who survives, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Crump, both deceased.
She is survived by her husband of the home.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at the Chavis-Parker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William Richardson.
Visitation will be one hour before the funeral at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Pennie Whitesell
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Pennie Andrews Whitesell, 86, of 5033 Whitesell Brothers Road, Elon College, died at 8 a.m. Friday, July 10, 1998, at Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center after three years of failing health, one month critical.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Howard A. Whitesell, and the daughter of Mr. Robert Alexander Andrews and Mrs. Hattie Michael Andrews, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethlehem Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Ann Durham Billings of Rhonda and Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Sykes of Elon College; two sons, Mr. Alton Alfred Whitesell of Gibsonville and Mr. Clayton Anderson Whitesell of Alexander, Va.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Callie Andrews and Mrs. Sallie Byrd; four brothers, Mr. Turner Andrews, Mr. Guy Andrews, Mr. Lee Andrews and Mr. Jack Andrews.
The funeral was Sunday at Bethlehem Christian Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Christian Church, Building Fund, 3625 Altamahaw Church St., Elon College, N.C. 27244; or to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Mrs. Thelma L. Isley
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Thelma Elizabeth Lawrence Isley, 88, a resident of Alamance Health Care, died at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a long illness. She was a former resident of N.C. 100, Elon College.
A native of Randleman, she was the wife of the late Mr. Clarence R. Isley and daughter of Mr. George C. Lawrence and Mrs. Zade Ivey Lawrence, both deceased. She was a 1928 graduate of Randleman High School and former owner and director of Isley's Day Nursery. She was a member of Shallow Ford United Church of Christ and a former children's Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Patricia Ann Isley of Pineville; one son, Mr. Larry Kent Isley of Greensboro; one brother, Mr. Harold "Dick" Lawrence of Greensboro; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Les Jolley. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 Monday evening and at other times at the home of the son, 1905 Ashton Drive, Greensboro.
