Mr. Loy S. Bowland Sr.
GRAHAM - Mr. Loy Samuel Bowland Sr., 76, of 510 Oakwood Lane, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Hospice Home in Burlington after five months of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Annie Stockard Bowland, who survives, and the son of Mr. Lon Wallace Bowland and Mrs. Sally Perry Bowland, both deceased. He was retired from the N.C. Dept. of Agriculture and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Graham Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sally Bowland Hall of Graham; a son, Mr. Loy Samuel “Sam” Bowland Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Bowland Pritchett of Greensboro and Mrs. Lucille Bowland Love of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Lon Banks Bowland of Burlington; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Robert H. Lamb
HAW RIVER - Mr. Robert H. “Butterbean’’ Lamb, 81, of 501 Graham Road, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at his home after one year of failing health, two weeks critical.
A native of New Hanover County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Susan Inman Lamb, and the son of Mr. Sube Fox Lamb and Mrs. Lizzie Mae Jones Lamb. He was retired from Cone Mills Tabardrey Plant, and a member of Florence Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Bonnie Boyer of East Towas, Mich., Mrs. Janie Dunnagan and Mrs. Connie Thompson, both of Graham, Ms. Margaret “Dusty” Harder of Haw River and Ms. Susan Lamb of Mebane; two sons, Mr. Donald R. “Donnie” Lamb Sr. of Charleston, S.C. and Mr. Richard “Casey” Lamb of Elon College; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Ronald Inman Lamb, two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Lassiter and Mrs. Kate Small, and a brother, Mr. Allen Lamb.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Buster Florence, pastor of Florence Memorial Baptist Church, and the Rev. Tommy Love, pastor of Wicker Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in Haw River Cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Meda S. Brooks
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Meda Skipper Brooks, 89, a resident of Quality Care, died at 5:26 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Brunswick County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Samuel Opal Brooks, and the daughter of Mr. John M. Skipper and Mrs. Allie Carter Skipper, both deceased. She was retired from Copland Fabrics and a former member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Carol Ann McCormick of Mebane; three sons, Mr. Alton Elwood Brooks of Henderson, Mr. Warren Wade Brooks of Nokesville, Va., and Mr. Roger Franklin Brooks of Gibsonville; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Linwood Brooks; two sisters, Ms. Virginia Dickens and Ms. Della Pierce; five brothers, Mr. Claude Skipper, Mr. Francis Skipper, Mr. Donald Skipper, Mr. Lawrence Skipper and Mr. Charlie Skipper.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Tim Robinson, pastor of The First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Linwood cemetery in Graham.
The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington Tuesday afternoon from 12:45 to 1:45. At other times they will be at the home of the daughter at 3132 Timberlyne Drive, Mebane.
Mr. Ardon E. Bakken
BURLINGTON - Mr. Ardon Eugene Bakken, 80, of 404 Trail 3, Burlington, died at 10:50 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at his home after two years of failing health.
A native of Audobon, Minn., he was the husband of Mrs. Gracie W. Bakken who survives, and the son of Mr. Albert O. Bakken and Mrs. Carrie Rasmussen Bakken, both deceased. He was retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co., and was a magistrate for Alamance County. He was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite, Greensboro Valley. He belonged to the Amran Temple, the Shrine Temple and was a member of the Burlington Masonic Lodge 721. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include four daughters, Mrs. Patricia Tamul of Pass Christian, Miss., Ms. Wanda Bakken of the home, Mrs. Peggy Ferrell of Raleigh and Mrs. Rita Barnhardt of Graham; one sister, Mrs. Norma Coleman of Pelican Rapids, Minn.; one brother, Mr. Enoch Bakken of Audobon; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Ethel Newstrom and Ms. Myrtle Ramsey; and four brothers, Mr. Joseph Bakken, Mr. Silas Bakken, Mr. Benjamin Bakken and Mr. Jacob Bakken.
Masonic graveside rites will be conducted at Alamance Memorial Park at 11 a.m. Wednesday by Mr. Charles Bivins of Burlington Masonic Lodge 72.
Burlington Masonic Lodge 721 will meet in emergent communication at 10 a.m. Wednesday for the purpose of conducting Masonic graveside rites.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Mr. George Pickett Jr.
RALEIGH - Mr. George E. Pickett Jr., 71, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at his home.
A native of Raleigh, he graduated from Broughton High School in 1945, and attended N.C. State University where he played basketball and held the track high jump record until 1971. He was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He graduated from State in 1951, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry, serving in the Korean War and earning the Combat Infantry Badge. He graduated from Airborne School in Fort Benning.
He earned a masters degree from Columbia, and was named head basketball coach at Newberry College where he was 1958 Coach of the Year in South Carolina. He served as assistant basketball coach at the Citadel and in 1959 joined the N.C. State basketball staff as assistant coach under Everett Case.
In 1962 he started his own business, George E. Pickett Jr. and Associates. He was a member of the National Electrical Manufacturer’s Representatives Association, Manufacturers’ Agent National Association where he served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Joan Pickett; two sons, Mr. Howard Pickett of Cary and Mr. Donnie Pickett of Winston-Salem; one daughter, Mrs. Cathy Pickett Lamb of Burlington; his mother, Mrs. Queoga W. Pickett of Raleigh; and one brother, Mr. J. Daniel Pickett of Raleigh; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Col. George E. Pickett.
The funeral will be conducted at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church on Fairview Road in Raleigh at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The family will be at Brown Wynne Funeral Home in Cary this evening from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Ms. Eloisa M. Guy
MEBANE - Ms. Eloisa M. Guy, 93, of Mebane, died at 6:08 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after one year of failing health, four days critical.
A native of New Jersey, she was the wife of the late Mr. Timothy Guy, and was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
There are no immediate survivors.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Martin’s Chapel Church cemetery by the Rev. Floyd Repass, pastor of Community Baptist Church.
There will be no visitation.

Mr. Billy R. Yeatts
MEBANE - Mr. Billy R. Yeatts, 56, of 203 E. Laramie Drive, died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at his home after a sudden illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mylona Rainey Yeatts who survives, and the son of Mrs. Rebecca Oakley Yeatts of Mebane and the late Mr. Jack Harvey Yeatts Sr. He was employed at General Electric, and was a member of Baynes Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and his mother include one daughter, Mrs. Tracy Yeatts Kelly of Gibsonville; one son, Mr. Ronald Yeatts of Mebane; one sister, Mrs. Warren (Linda) Foushee of Mebane; one brother, Mr. Jack Harvey Yeatts Jr. of Torrance, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Baynes Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry McCarty, pastor. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery in Mebane.

Mrs. Virginia Carrowon
MAXTON - Mrs. Virginia Dalton Carrow, 94, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at Wesley Pines Retirement Home in Lumberton.
She was the wife of the late Mr. Thomas C. Carrowon, and the daughter of Mr. David James Dalton and Mrs. Susan Bell Dalton, both deceased. She was a registered nurse for 46 years for Pittman Hospital in Fayetteville and Southeastern Regional Hospital in Lumberton.
Survivors include one daugthter, Mrs. Peggy Tyson of Mebane; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Evelyn Robinson and Mrs. Burnice Smith, both of Philadelphia; one stepson, Mr. Thomas C. Carrowon of Boone; and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Simpson of Lumberton.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Maxton. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery in Maxton.
The family will be at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford this evening from 7 to 9.

Ms. Nancy C. Simonson
MARLINTON, W.Va. -Ms. Nancy C. Simonson, 81, of Marlinton, W. Va., and formerly of Fayetteville, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital in Buckeye, W. Va.
Born Oct. 31, 1916 in Ramseur, she was the wife of Mr. Louis A. Simonson of Marlinton, W. Va., and daughter of Dr. Stephen W. Caddell and Mrs. Martha Siler Caddell, both deceased. She was a retired elementary school teacher and of the Methodist faith.
Survivors other than her husband include a son, Mr. Stephen Simonson of Rustburg, Va.; a daughter, Ms. Susan Arbogast of Hillsboro, W. Va., and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Mr. James Caddell, Mr. Moses “Dick” Caddell, Mr. Paul Caddell and Dr. Fred Caddell; and two sisters, Ms. Alease Scott and Ms. Lucy Hughes.
A graveside service will be conducted at Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Beth May
NORFOLK, Va. - Mrs. Frances Elizabeth “Beth” Moser May, 51, of 1268 W. Oceanview Drive, died Friday evening, Sept. 18, 1998, at Virginia Beach Hospital after 15 years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Jack May who survives, and daughter of Mrs. Frances Preston Moser of Graham and the late Mr. Bruce A. Moser Sr. She was an insurance auditor. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Graham. A graduate of Graham High School and Elon College, she was a member of the Southeastern and Eastern Carolinas Auditors Association.
Survivors other than her husband of Burlington and her mother include a brother, Mr. Bruce A. Moser Jr. of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by Dr. Ralph E. Jones Jr. and Dr. William Weckerly. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
