Mr. Albert E. King Jr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. Albert E. “Al” King Jr., 77, of 2804 Blanche Drive, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Hudson King, who survives, and the son of Mr. Albert Eli King Sr. and Mrs. Alma Huffines King, both deceased. He retired after 30 years of service with Burlington Industries, Mays Hosiery, J. Spencer Love and the California Plant. He played minor league baseball in the Greensboro League before being drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Rangers at Fort Benning, Ga., for his action in the Merrills’ Marauders, during World War II. Merrills’ Marauders, a company formed by Gen. Frank Merrill, fought behind enemy lines in Burma and throughout India. He served in the Mars Task Force and was one of only 100 survivors of the company of 3, 000 men. His group was the first to receive a Presidential Citation for their service to the Country. He received the Golden Gloves Boxing award for boxing in the U.S. Army on various bases. He was wounded while securing the Burma Road and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of Holly Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sons, Mr. Wayne Jarrett of Greensboro and Mr. David Michael King and Mr. Rodney Dale King, both of Burlington; three sisters, Mrs. James (Dorothy “Dot”) Woody of Burlington, and Mrs. Elizabeth “Lib” Wyrick and Mrs. Sue K. Farrell, both of Graham; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Garland King and Mr. James “Jim” King.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Holly Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul West, interim pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park in Greensboro.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Harry J. Estes
SANFORD - Mr. Harry James Estes, 80, of 700 Westover Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at Central Carolina Hospital. He was a former resident of Maple Avenue, Burlington.
A native of Macon County, he was the husband of Mrs. Essie Mae Humphreys Estes, who survives, and the son of Mr. Cling L. Estes and Mrs. Julia Justice Estes, both deceased. He was retired from Cannon Mills and worked for many years at Virginia Mills. He was a member of Belmont Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife include a son, the Rev. James R. Estes of Sanford; three sisters, Mrs. Madeline Eatman of Charlotte, Mrs. Pawnee Wooten and Mrs. Ruth Dobson, both of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Jack Estes of Burlington and Mr. Luke Estes of Belmont; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Elbie Estes Drye and Mrs. Mabel Estes Johnson; and two brothers, Mr. Grady Estes and Mrs. Clyde Estes.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel in Sanford by the Rev. Larry Janey. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Belmont Baptist Church in Burlington.
The family will be at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home from 9:30 to 11 this morning.

Mr. Glenn D. Stevens
ROXBORO - Mr. Glenn Dale Stevens, 58, of 195 Lynn Smith Road, Semora, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after a sudden illness.
A native of Truro, Nova Scotia, he was the husband of Mrs. Joan A. Stevens, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Annie Stevens, who survives, and the late Mr. Harold Henry. He was self-employed for 39 years. He was formerly president of Truro Ready Mix Concrete and was recently the president of Glendale Concrete Contractors Inc. in Roxboro. He was involved as the director of the Board of Ready Mix Concrete in Canada, the Jaycees, a Gyros, member of the Moose Lodge in Henderson and member of the Roxboro-Person County Homebuilder’s Association.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Nova Scotia include a daughter, Mrs. Darlene L. Horton of Hillsville, Va.; three sons, Mr. Bill D. Elliott of Ottawa, Mr. Glenn Gardine Stevens of Galax, Va., and Roxboro and Mr. William D. Stevens of Roxboro; two brothers, Mr. Ralph Hilson Stevens of Hillsville and Mr. Theodore “Ted” Stevens of Cary; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Cal-Vel United Methodist Church in Roxboro.

Mrs. Louise R. Pope
HILLSBOROUGH - Mrs. Louise Roberts Pope, 65, of 514 Hurdle Mills Road, Cedar Grove, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at her home.
She was the wife of Mr. John Howard Pope, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. William Currie Wagoner and Mrs. Jessie Pearl Horner Wagoner, both deceased. She was a member of Eno Presbyterian Church and the Women of the Moose, Chapter 1658.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Ms. Sharon Pope Liner of Kernersville and Ms. Phyllis Pope McDade of Cedar Grove; a son, Mr. John Howard Pope Jr. of Cedar Grove; two sisters, Ms. Birdie Crutchfield of Burlington and Ms. Annie Watkins of Oxford; two brothers, Mr. George Wagoner of Cedar Grove and Mr. Russell Wagoner of Hurdle Mills; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eno Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Bob Brizendine. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Willie T. Moore
CEDAR GROVE - Mr. Willie T. Moore, 71, of 3220 Carr Store Road, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center after a sudden illness.
Born Nov. 15, 1927, in Person County, he was the husband for 44 years of Mrs. Ruth Walker Moore, who survives, and the son of Mr. William “Bill” Moore and Mrs. Mandy Cates Moore, both deceased. He retired from Dixie Yarn after 39 years of service and was a member of Mount Zion Christian Church.
Survivors other than his wife include a daughter, Ms. Annette Skaggs of Cedar Grove; two sons, Mr. Tommy Moore of Mebane and Mr. David Moore of Cedar Grove; five sisters, Ms. Pearl Williams of Mebane, Ms. Annie Glasgow of Cedar Grove, Ms. Macie Bare and Ms. Blanche Moore, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Maggie Edmonds of Haw River; three brothers, Mr. Haywood Moore, Mr. Lonnie Moore and Mr. Elbert Moore, all of Mebane; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Thomas Burnette
GRAHAM - Mr. Thomas Burnette of 405 N. Main St., Apt. D, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at his home.
A native of Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nettie Burnette, who survives, and the son of Mr. Clayton Burnette and Mrs. Sallie Jones Burnette, both deceased. He was a machine operator with Burlington Industries and was a member of First Baptist Church of Graham.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Jattie Watkins of Burlington and Mrs. Esther Whitmore of Mebane; a brother, Mr. Robert Burnette of Haw River; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Martin Chapel Baptist Church by Dr. H.V. Miles, pastor of First Baptist Church of Graham, and the Rev. Henry Simmons, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Sharpe Memorial Chapel from 7 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Mr. Willie F. Shoffner
GIBSONVILLE - Mr. Willie Frank “Jack” Shoffner, 83, a former resident of Gibsonville, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1998, at Starmount Health and Rehabilitation Center of Greensboro.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mr. Robert Daniel Shoffner and Mrs. Flora Coble Shoffner, both deceased. He was a retired textile employee
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Carol Shoffner Sims of Gibsonville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
There will be no service or visitation.

Mrs. Doris E. Condrey
HILLSBOROUGH - Mrs. Doris Elizabeth Condrey, 68, of Mebane, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
She was the wife of Mr. William Condrey, who survives. She was employed by the Orange County School System for 14 years and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Ms. Jo Ann Baldwin of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Earl F. Turner of Hillsborough and Mr. Richard Condrey of Mebane; a sister, Ms. Judy Bain of Durham; three brothers, Mr. Kernie Riley of Durham, Mr. Bryant Riley of Mebane and Mr. Curtis Riley of Rougemont; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Walker’s Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsborough by the Rev. Earl P. Echols Jr. Burial will be in Ebenezer Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Boyd F. Merritt Sr.
FRANKLINTON - Mr. Boyd Franklin Merritt Sr., 80, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Thelma Coleman Merritt, who survives, and the son of Mr. Major L. Merritt and Mrs. Josephine Sutton Merritt, both deceased. He was a veteran of World War II and was retired from Burlington Mills.
Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Jackie (Rose Merritt) Stroud of Franklinton and Ms. Jean Merritt Saunders of Raleigh; a son, Mr. Boyd F. Merritt Jr. of Summerfield, S.C.; a brother, Mr. James L. Merritt of Burlington; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Sandling Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Clyde L. Waiden Jr. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Mr. Scottie L. Tucker
LOWGAP - Mr. Scottie Lee Tucker, 24, of Route 1, Box 108, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn.
Born Aug. 15, 1974, in Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Angela Lowe Tucker, who survives, and the son of Mr. Alvis Lee Tucker and Mrs. Gail Davis Tucker, who both survive. He was employed as a painter by the Tucker Paint Co., and was a member of Friendly Lane Baptist Church in Burlington.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and parents of Lowgap, include a daughter, Miss Anna Gail Tucker of the home; and a brother, Mr. Bryan Tucker of Lowgap.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at True Vine Baptist church by the Rev. Danny Miles, the Rev. Wesley Flippen and the Rev. Rawley “Dink” Haynes. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church cemetery.

Ms. Lena M. Harris
GREENSBORO - Ms. Lena Mae Harris, 91, of the Brian Center Nursing Home in Yanceyville died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at her residence. She was formerly of 214 Huffman St., Greensboro.
Born Sept. 2, 1907, in Montgomery County, she was the daughter of Mr. Lewis Harris and Mrs. Maggie Bruton Harris, both deceased. She was a member of Trinity AME Zion Church in Greensboro, where she was a member of Zion Crusaders Club, Calendar Birthday Club and was a stewardess.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Flaxie Fulton Tyson of Greenville.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity AME Zion Church. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
The family will be at the church 30 minutes before the service. The body may be viewed from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home.
