Mr. Joseph V. Gaspard

GRAHAM - Mr. Joseph Victor Gaspard, 70, of 1543 Moores Chapel cemetery Road, died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at his home after two years of failing health.

An Alexandria, La., native, he was the husband of Mrs. Helen Ray Gaspard, who survives, and the son of Mr. Edgar Gaspard and Mrs. Gladys O'Briant Gaspard, both deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a retired telecommunications supervisor. He was Catholic.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Ms. Vicki Paul of Pineville, La.; a sister, Ms. Patricia Smith of Pineville; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Pineville.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Mrs. Verlie Clark

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Verlie Austin Clark, 87, of 4327 Burch Bridge Road died at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at D & M Family Care Home after 10 years of failing health and a critical illness of two months.

An Alamance County native, she was the wife of the late Mr. Charles Edgar Clark and the daughter of Mr. Charles Samuel Austin and Mrs. Mary Shackleford Austin, both deceased. She was a homemaker and Baptist.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Betty Webb of Colonial Heights, Va.; two brothers, Mr. Jack Austin of Burlington and Mr. Albert Austin of Altamahaw; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Larry Lamberth, pastor of Harvest Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The body will remain at Lowe Funeral Home through the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Harvest Baptist Church, 3741 South Church St., Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Mr. Jerry T. Austin

BURLINGTON - Mr. Jerry Thomas Austin, 52, 111 Maple Ave. Apt. 306 died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997, after 11 months of failing health.

A Union County native, he was the son of Mrs. Sylvia Hudgins King, who survives, and the late Mr. Thomas Jefferson Austin. He was a carpet salesman and a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors other than his mother of the home include his brother, Mr. Thomas Carl Austin of Georgia.

The family will be at the home.

Mrs. Nancy E. Harder

MEBANE - Mrs. Nancy Elizabeth Harder, 68, of 7503 Loop Road died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center.

An Alamance County native, she was the wife of the late Mr. Louis Harder and the daughter of the Mr. George Anderson Dodson and Mrs. Pearl Howard, both deceased. Educated for two years at a business college, she was retired as a secretary at a furniture company. She was a member of Ca-vel Methodist Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Mr. Bobby Dodson and Mr. George Dodson, both of Mebane.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Walker's Funeral Home in Mebane by the Rev. Archie Hobbs and the Rev. Connie Stutts. Burial will be at Hillsborough City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Emma J. Martin

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Emma Jean Martin of 1729 Preston St. died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997, at home.

She was the wife of Mr. Jason Martin.

Mr. Willie C. Reaves

PITTSBORO - Mr. Willie Curley Reaves, 77, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997 at the VA Hospital in Durham.

Survivors include two sisters, Ms. Lannie Reaves Guthrie of Pittsboro and Mrs. Vilena Reaves Guthrie of Graham.

The funeral will be conducted Tuesday at Union Grove AME Zion Church in Goldston by the Rev. Sylvester Lambert, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Knotts Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

Mr. Willie A. King

YANCEYVILLE - Mr. Willie Anderson King of 212 Suncrest Apartments died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997, at home.

He was the husband of Mrs. Wilbert H. King, who survives.

Survivors other than his wife of Yanceyville include three daughters, Mrs. Fannie Sue Penny, Mrs. Easter Pinnix and Mrs. Bertha King, all of Burlington; two sons, Mr. John Willie King of Burlington and Mr. Wesley David King of Reidsville; two brothers, Mr. Jimmie King of Brown Summit and Mr. Johnny King of Yanceyville; one sister, Mrs. Ollie Totten of Reidsville; 25 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at High Rock Baptist Church in Reidsville. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 Tuesday night at McLaurin Memorial Chapel at the McLaurin Funeral Home in Reidsville.

Mr. Carlton R. Best

BOLIVIA - Mr. Carlton Ray 'Bo' Best, 36, of 601 Brunswick St. died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at home.

A Wake County native, he was a self-employed building contractor. He was the son of Mr. Charles M. Best and Mrs. Rachel Thompson Best, who both survive.

Survivors other than his mother of Efland and father of Mebane include two sisters, Ms. Betsy Ann Best of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Mrs. Sarah Best Gibson of Efland; and one brother, Mr. Charles Michael 'Mike' Best of Butner.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church cemetery by the Rev. Randy Welford. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will remain at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Graham until being taken to the church for the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday night at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home and at other times at the home of the mother, Mrs. Rachel Thompson Best, Hylen Mills, 6100 Bradshaw Quarry Road, Efland.

Memorials may be made to the Sen Cland Alumni Association, 1390 S. 16th St., Wilmington, N.C. 28401.

Mrs. Mary Ramseur

GREENSBORO - Mrs. Mary Joyce Ramseur of 402 Willow Court died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Marie Vincent of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Manley Miles of Burlington and Mr. John Willie Miles of Elon College; three sisters, Mrs. Althea Smith of Whitsett, Mrs. Martha Gant of Elon College and Mrs. Ella Crumpton of Greensboro.

The graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Archers Grove Baptist Church in Burlington. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are by McLaurin Funeral Home.

Ms. Darlenne Thompson

OXFORD - Ms. Darlenne Thomas Thompson, 57, of 2616 Davis Chapel Road died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

An Oxford native, she was the daughter of Mr. Albert Thomas and Mrs. Katie Hart, both deceased. She was self employed and a member of Mebane Wesleyan Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Mr. Bobby Thomas of Oxford and Mr. Roy Thomas of Newport News, Va.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oakwood cemetery in Mebane by Dr. Delos Miles.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 Tuesday morning at Walker's Funeral Home in Mebane.

Mr. Guy A. Cain

BURLINGTON - Mr. Guy A. Cain, 70, of 318 Bland Blvd. died Sunday morning, Oct. 5, 1997, at home after six years of declining health.

An Orange County native, he was the husband of Mrs. Rachel B. Cain, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Flossie Sloan Cain, who survives, and the late Mr. Guy S. Cain. He was retired from AT&T. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Alamance and a former member of the Alamance Chorale.

Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Raleigh include a daughter, Ms. Patrice O. Cain of Pinehurst; two sons, Dr. Gary A. Cain of Wilmington, Del., and the Rev. Dale S. Cain of Alamance; a sister, Mrs. Alice Burleigh of St. Leonard, Md.; three brothers, Mr. Max Cain of Titus, Ala., Mr. Sloan Cain of Hamptonville and Mr. Tom Cain of Winston-Salem; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Dale S. Cain of First Baptist Church of Alamance and Dr. E. Al Roberts of Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington and at other times at the home.

Mr. George N. Leath

BURLINGTON - Mr. George Nathan Leath, 85, of 1430 Florence Road died at 6:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a critical illness of several days.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Thelma Howard Leath, who survives, and the son of Mr. Charlie Leath and Mrs. Fannie Walker Leath, both deceased. He was a member of Pilgrim's Rest Primitive Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include four daughters, Mrs. Sandra Bass of the home, Mrs. Peggie Gean Ashton of Riverdale, Md., Mrs. Edna L. Lee and Ms. Janice Leath, both of Burlington; six sons, the Rev. Charlie Leath of Macon, Mr. George L. Leath and Mr. Thomas L. Leath, both of Burlington, Mr. Robert L. Leath, Mr. Nathaniel Leath and Mr. Curry Leath, all of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Argo Robinson, Mrs. Clara Satterfield and Mrs. Aileen Brown, all of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Monroe Leath and Mr. Alonzo Leath, both of Burlington; 37 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Patillo Christian Church by Elder William N. Alston. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Enoch Cemetery.

The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 7 to 8 this evening.

Mrs. Carrie Biggerstaff

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Carrie Bland Guinn Biggerstaff, 89, of 514 Circle Drive died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, after several years of failing health.

A native of Richmond County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Frank M. Biggerstaff and the daughter of Mr. Murray M. Guinn and Mrs. Alice Bland Guinn, both deceased. She was educated at East Carolina University and Appalachian State University and was a former elementary school teacher. She was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She was a member and teacher of the Fannie Larkin Sunday school class for more than 40 years, was a honorary steward and lifetime member of the administrative board.

Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Carolyn J. Biggerstaff of Greensboro; a son, Mr. Franklin L. Biggerstaff of Greensboro; two sisters, Mrs. Nettie M. Jeffords of Lamar, S.C., and Mrs. Margaret Britt of Wendell; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Front Street United Methodist Church by Dr. William C. Simpson and Dr. Robert McKenzie. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Members of the Fannie Larkin Sunday school class will be honorary pallbearers.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 4 to 6 this afternoon.

Julia B. Lyon

GRAHAM - Sydney Margaret Lyon and Julia Brooke Lyon, infant twin daughters of Mr. Bobby Wood Lyon II and Ms. Melody Dickerson Lyon of 518 Delaware Ave., died at 12:32 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

They were natives of Alamance County.

Survivors other than their parents of the home include maternal grandparents, Mr. Bob Dickerson and Mrs. Mary Dickerson of Burlington; paternal grandparents, Mr. Bobby Lyon and Mrs. Cecilia Lyon of Burlington; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. Jimmy Thomas and Mrs. Pearl Eller of Mebane; and paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Adele Toney of Burlington.

The funeral will be conducted at 5 p.m. today at Haw River Christian Church by the Rev. James L. Rosser. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. James L. Rosser.

The family will be at Haw River Christian Church from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Verlie Clark, 87, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at a local rest home.

Dr. Clyde O. Terry

TOPEKA, Kan. - Dr. Clyde O. Terry, 77, died at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at Starmount Vail Hospital in Topeka after two years of failing health, one week critical.

A native of Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Lucille Terry, who survives, and the son of Mr. Lester W. Terry and Mrs. Mamie Clayton Terry, both deceased. He graduated from Aycock High School in Orange County and served five years in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Mo., and retired after 35 years practice in the Oakland area of Topeka.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Ms. Toni Hootea of Greeley, Colo., and Ms. Trudy Evans of Union City, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. Grace Ashley of Mebane; a brother, Mr. Percy Terry of Mebane; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Monday in Topeka. Burial will be in Memorial Park in Topeka.

Mr. Wilbur Faucette Sr.

MEBANE - Mr. Wilbur McFarland Faucette Sr., 67, of 2242 S. Third St. Ext. died at 2 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at his home after two years of failing health.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Betty W. Faucette, who survives, and the son of Mr. Junious C. Faucette and Mrs. Lillian T. Faucette, both deceased. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was retired from AT&T in Burlington and was a member of AT&T Pioneers of America. He was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Kathi Bunn of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a son, Mr. Wilbur McFarland Faucette Jr. of Haw River; a sister, Mrs. Melba Lashley of Mebane; two brothers, Mr. Samuel 'Sam' Faucette and Mr. Roney Faucette, both of Mebane; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Northside Presbyterian Church in Burlington by the Rev. Dan Bartel, pastor. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Northside Presbyterian Church, 1805 Vaughn Road, Burlington, N.C. 27217.

Mr. Richard Whitted

HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Richard 'Chink' Whitted, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997, at his home.

Born March 16, 1911, in Orange County, he was the son of Mr. John Page Whitted and Mrs. Julia Harris Whitted, both deceased. He was retired from the Orange County School System and was a member of Lipscombe Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include eight daughters, Ms. Lucy Henderson of Kittrell, Ms. Virgie Wilson of Baltimore, Ms. Joyce Crisp and Ms. Tanya Whitted, both of Mebane, Ms. Arlena Fuller of Cedar Grove, Ms. Josephine Johnson of Burlington and Ms. Iome Whitted and Ms. Pamela Whitted, both of Hillsborough; two sons, Mr. Carlton 'Pete' Whitted of Hillsborough and Mr. John Page Whitted of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Ms. Mary Scarlett of Durham; a brother, Mr. George Whitted of Hillsborough; and many grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Lipscombe Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. T.E. Taylor and the Rev. Reginal Burnette. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Lipscombe Baptist Church from 7 to 8:30 this evening.
