Mr. John Lassiter
BURLINGTON - Mr. John “Jake” Lassiter, 83, of Burlington, died at 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Alamance Skilled Nursing Division after eight years of failing health.
A native of Montgomery County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mable Saunders Lassiter, who survives, and the son of Mr. Oscar Lassiter and Mrs. Elva Pern Crawford Lassiter, both deceased. He was retired from AT&T and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a youth coach with the Burlington Recreation Department for many years and was a member of Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church, where he was an honorary life deacon.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Walkie (Diana) L. Hanford of Graham; four sons, Mr. J. Don Lassiter of Charlotte, Mr. Mike Lassiter of Statesville, Mr. Steve Lassiter of Burlington and Dr. Randy Lassiter of Salisbury; a sister, Mrs. Jessie L. Shaw of Troy; a brother, Mr. Bob Lassister of Arlington, Va.; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Betty McCaskill; and a brother, Mr. Gladston Lassiter.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church by Dr. E. Al Roberts, pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church, 302 Logan St., Burlington, N.C. 27217; or to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Mrs. Betty S. Stack
GREENSBORO - Mrs. Betty Sharpe Stack, 76, of Healthhaven Nursing Center, died at 6:08 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital after 15 years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Albert L. Stack, and the daughter of Mr. Albert Sharpe and Mrs. Antha Isley Sharpe, both deceased. She was retired from Sears and was a member of the American Business Women’s Association. She was a member of Presbyterian Church of the Cross in Greensboro.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kawanua S. Carter of Greensboro; a son, Mr. Douglas L. Stack of Laurinburg; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Oakley of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Kelly Sharpe of Burlington and Mr. Wade Sharpe of Liberty; and a grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Janie Bowman and Ms. Thelma Sharpe; and three brothers, Mr. Jake Sharpe, Mr. Adrian Sharpe and Mr. John Sharpe.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Low’s Lutheran Church cemetery by the Rev. Tim Martin, pastor.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of the sister, 341 Williamson St., Burligton.

Mr. Thomas Pulliam
BURLINGTON - Mr. Thomas Pulliam died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Durham Regional Hospital after a long illness.
Sharpe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Mrs. Harriet E. Long
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Harriett Enoch long of 7411 N.C. 62 North, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Jule Long, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Ed Enoch and Mrs. Minnie Vincent Enoch, both deceased. She was a farmer and a housewife.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, Mr. Perry Jule Long and Mr. Linwood Monroe Long, both of the home.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Snow Hill Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Durrie Pinnix. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Enoch Family Cemetery.
The family will be at Sharpe Memorial Chapel from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday evening.

Mr. Robert J. Morehead
JULIAN - Mr. Robert James “Bob” Morehead, 55, of 5383 Amick Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, after a long illness.
Born Jan. 21, 1943, in Rushville, Ohio, he was the husband of Mrs. Bonnie Mohler Morehead, who survives, and the son of Mr. B. Franklin Morehead and Mrs. Dorothy Upp M. Morehead, both deceased. He had lived in Greensboro since 1965 and attended Moriah United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg with the rank of sergeant. He was a local employee of Lozier Corp. of Omaha, Neb., for 22 years.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. C. Todd Morehead of Julian and Mr. R. Brent Morehead of Atlanta; a stepdaughter, Ms. Angela L. Dosier of Julian; a stepson, Mr. Eric W. Neal of Burlington; a sister, Ms. Betty Kissling of Lancaster, Ohio; two brothers, Mr. Pearl Morehead of Tampa, Fla., and Mr. John Morehead of Rushville; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. S. Eber Morehead.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gilmore Memorial Park by the Rev. Vance Lowe.
The family will be at the home from 7 to 9 Friday evening.
Memorials may be made to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27405; or to Moriah United Methodist Church, 3611 Liberty Road, Greensboro, N.C. 27406.

Mr. James A. Carpenter
ELON COLLEGE - Mr. James Albert “Al” Carpenter, 45, of Elon College, died at 9:22 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro after a sudden illness.
A native of Takoma Park, Md., he was the son of Dr. Raymond Allison Carpenter and Mrs. Edna Burkhart Carpenter, who survive. He was associate professor of computing science and mathematics and the chairman of the department of computing sciences at Elon College. He joined the faculty of Elon College in 1983. He received the Daniels-Danieley Award for Excellence in Teaching for the 1988-89 year, which is the college’s highest teaching honor. He served as co-chairman of the curriculum committee during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 academic years. He inspired Elon’s first Academic Summit and played a key role in its success. He was a graduate of Montgomery College, Rockville Campus; had a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, College Park; and a master’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He did postgraduate work for the Institute for Retraining in Computer Science at Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He was a member of Elon College Community United Church of Christ, where he taught Sunday school.
Survivors other than his parents of Sykesville, Md., include two sisters, Mrs. Suzette Carpenter Dotterer of Johnsville, Md., and Ms. Sharon Elizabeth Carpenter of Westminster, Md.; and a brother, Mr. Raymond Allison Carpenter Jr. of Finksburg, Md.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. J. Albert Burkhart and Mrs. Elizabeth Burkhart.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elon College Community United Church of Christ by the Rev. Arch Aitcheson, pastor, and the Rev. Richard McBride, chaplain of Elon College. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Woodlawn cemetery in Knoxville.
The family will be at Rich and Thomson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 9 Friday evening.

Mrs. Rosemary Ester
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Rosemary Moss Ester, 68, of 1560 York Place, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several months of failing health.
A native of Arlington, Texas, she was the wife of the late Mr. Edward Patrick “Pat” Ester and the daughter of Mr. Robert Moss and Mrs. Grace Horton Moss, both deceased. She was a member of Brookwood Baptist Church, where she was a choir member, member of Christian Women Club and a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Mary Lou Crenshaw and Mrs. Andrea Hartley, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Luanne Ozmint of Columbia, S.C.; a son, Mr. Edward Patrick “Buddy” Ester Jr. of Burlington; and 10 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Douglas Orin Moss.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Brookwood Baptist Church by Dr. Garry Baldwin, pastor, and Dr. J.L. Williams, of New Directions. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Mary Lou Crenshaw, 1560 York Place, Burlington.

Mr. George Ruffin Jr.
DURHAM - Mr. George Ruffin Jr., of Durham, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1936, in Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Ellen Ruffin, who survives, and the son of Mr. George Ruffin Sr. and Mrs. Pauline Cates Ruffin, both deceased. He retired from Duke Medical Center. He and his wife owned the Ruffin Family Care and Mangum Street Family Care facilities. He was a member of Lattisville Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include four daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Evangeline) Lee, Mrs. Gary (Patricia) Poole, both of Mebane, Ms. Darlene Marie Ruffin of Burlington, Mrs. Lonzie (Georgia) Scales of Hillsborough; a son, Mr. George Clinton Ruffin of Hillsborough; three stepdaughters, Ms. Sylvia Caples, Ms. Dale Cannady and Mrs. Ricky (Lenore) Green, all of Durham; a stepson, Mr. George Baxter Jr. of Philadelphia; three sisters, Ms. Hazel Lee Tapp and Ms. Elvinia Paulette Ruffin, both of Hillsborough, and Mrs. Paul (Patricia A.) Cottman of Glen Burnie, Md.; 10 brothers, Mr. Leon Ruffin of Mebane, Mr. James MacArthur Ruffin and Mr. Linwood Ruffin, both of Washington, D.C., Mr. Bobby Gene Ruffin and Mr. Willie Ruffin, both of Hillsborough, Mr. J.T. Ruffin of Greensboro, Mr. Burley Ruffin and Mr. Jeffrey Marshall Ruffin, both of Durham, Mr. Hurley Cates Ruffin of Cedar Grove and Mr. Frederick Ruffin of Silver Springs, Md.; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lattisville Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Lattisville Grove Baptist Church from 7 to 8 this evening.

Mrs. Vaden G. Hensley
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Vaden Lee Gant Hensley, 76, died at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after eight months of failing health, one day critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Julius Vance “Jake” Hensley, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Willie “Bill” Page Gant and Mrs. Della Conklin Gant, both deceased. She was employed by Kayser-Roth Hosiery for many years. She received a degree in cosmetology. She was a charter member of Glen Raven Baptist Church, where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher and choir member.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Bill (Melba) Crane of Charlotte; a son, Mr. Kim Hensley of Elon College; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Riley Gant.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Glen Raven Baptist Church by the Rev. Bobby Fann, pastor, and the Rev. George M. “Jack” Phillips Jr., pastor of Zion Christian Church. Entombment will be in Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of the son, 810 Wagoner Road, Elon College.

Miss Chessie M. Eller
NORTH WILKESBORO - Miss Chessie Maie Eller, 89, of Old N.C. 60, Millers Creek, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Wilkes Senior Village. She was a former resident of Burlington.
Born Dec. 17, 1908, in Wilkes County, she was the daughter of Mr. William Arthur Eller and Mrs. Lola Pierce Eller, both deceased. She was a retired practical nurse and was a nurse at McDade Clinic for 17 years. She was a member of Arbor Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include four sisters, Ms. Edna Foster of Mebane, Ms. Freida Huffman of North Wilkesboro, Ms. Argel Eller Orvin of Millers Creek and Ms. Annie Ruth Brooks of Roaring River; a brother, Mr. Jimmie Thomas Eller of Mebane; two foster daughters, Ms. Tammie Wilson of Charlotte, and Mrs. Rosie Bouchelle of Wilkesboro; and five foster grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Arbor Grove United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Steve McLain.
