Ms. Lura L. Guy
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Ms. Lura L. Guy, 92, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Gainesville.
A native of Cook County, Tenn., she moved to Bradenton, Fla. in 1960 from Burlington and moved from Bradenton to Old Town, Fla. in 1997. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Miram Walker of Old Town; a sister, Ms. Clarkie Balderson of Ramseur; two brothers, Mr. Elgie Lunsford of Asheboro and Mr. Joe Lunsford of Statesville; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted d at 10 a.m. Thursday at Skyway Memorial Gardens Chapel by the Rev. Roland Davis. Burial will be in Skyway Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Durant C. Holder
MONCURE - Mr. Durant Carlyle Holder, 78, a resident of Royal Oaks Assisted Living in Sanford, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, after years of failing health.
A longtime resident of Moncure in Chatham County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nova B. Holder, who survives, and the son of Mr. Ollie Holder and Mrs. Zollie Holder. He was retired as a rural postal mail carrier and was the owner of Holder’s Auto Sales. He was a member of Moncure Baptist Church, a Gideon and a World War II veteran.
Survivors other than his wife of Sanford include a daughter, Mrs. Mike (Beth H.) Holland of Apex; two stepdaughters, Mrs. James Donald (Carol) Smith of Burlington and Mrs. Ed (Valera) Steward of Advance; four sisters, Ms. Louise Holt and Ms. Katie Richards, both of Raleigh, Ms. Addie Casey of Durham and Ms. Marie Seal of Sun City, Ariz.; four step grandchildren; and four great-step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Annie Mae Holt.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Apex Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Matthew Garrett. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Durham.
The family will be at Apex Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Beth Holland and Mr. Mike Holland, 1716 N.C. 55 West, Apex.

Mr. George Ruffin Jr.
DURHAM - Mr. George Ruffin Jr. of Durham died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1936, in Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Ellen Ruffin, who survives, and the son of Mr. George Ruffin Sr. and Mrs. Pauline Cates Ruffin, both deceased. He retired from Duke Medical Center. He and his wife owned the Ruffin Family Care and Mangum Street Family Care facilities. He was a member of Lattisville Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include four daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Evangeline) Lee, Mrs. Gary (Patricia) Poole, both of Mebane, Ms. Darlene Marie Ruffin of Burlington, Mrs. Lonzie (Georgia) Scales of Hillsborough; a son, Mr. George Clinton Ruffin of Hillsborough; three stepdaughters, Ms. Sylvia Caples, Ms. Dale Cannady and Mrs. Ricky (Lenore) Green, all of Durham; a stepson, Mr. George Baxter Jr. of Philadelphia; three sisters, Ms. Hazel Lee Tapp and Ms. Elvinia Paulette Ruffin, both of Hillsborough, and Mrs. Paul (Patricia A.) Cottman of Glen Burnie, Md.; 10 brothers, Mr. Leon Ruffin of Mebane, Mr. James MacArthur Ruffin and Mr. Linwood Ruffin, both of Washington, D.C., Mr. Bobby Gene Ruffin and Mr. Willie Ruffin, both of Hillsborough, Mr. J.T. Ruffin of Greensboro, Mr. Burley Ruffin and Mr. Jeffrey Marshall Ruffin, both of Durham, Mr. Hurley Cates Ruffin of Cedar Grove and Mr. Frederick Ruffin of Silver Springs, Md.; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lattisville Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. L.A. Baskett. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. David R. Bunton
HENDERSON - Mr. David Richard Bunton, 45, of 231 Pinewood Drive, Lot No. 1, died Sunday night, Nov. 15, 1998, at his home.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Janiece VonCanon Bunton, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Burchie St. John Farrar, who survives, and the late Mr. Elwood Frazier Bunton. He was a former dry wall installer for a construction company and was on disability retirement. He attended the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Henderson include two stepsons, Mr. Daniel L. Monroe Culler and Mr. Eric Allan Fletcher Jr., both of Henderson; three sisters, Ms. Margaret Hayes of Hawaii, Ms. Bonnie Parker of Burlington and Ms. Faye Sharpe of Boca Raton, Fla.; and two brothers, Mr. Jerry Elwood Bunton of Henderson and Mr. Greg Wallace Bunton of Yorktown, Va.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
The family will be at the home Tuesday.

Mr. Arlie R. Shepherd
ELON COLLEGE - Mr. Arlie Rufus Shepherd, 83, of 7189 Tickle Road, died at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at the Hospice Home after a long illness.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Bertha Barber Shepherd, who survives, and the son of Mr. James A. Shepherd and Mrs. Carrie Apple Shepherd, both deceased. He was a farmer in the Apple’s Chapel Community and was a member of Apple’s Chapel Christian Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. Kenneth W. Shepherd of Gibsonville and Mr. Larry C. Shepherd of Mocksville; a brother, Mr. Paul Shepherd of Elon College; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Lala Cook.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Apple’s Chapel Christian Church by the Rev. C. Allen Myers, pastor, and the Rev. Don Ledbetter. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening.

Mrs. Dorothy Mitchell
YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Dorothy Holt Mitchell, 69, of 250 E. Main St., died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at her home.
Born May 12, 1929, in Sanford, she was the wife of Mr. Ralph Turner Mitchell, who died in 1985, and the daughter of Mr. Robert Holt and Mrs. Nora McDuffie Holt, both deceased. She retired from the N.C. Department of Corrections after 23 years of service. She was a homemaker and a member of Yanceyville Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Anita M. Lunsford of Leavenworth, Kan.; a brother, Mr. Lewis Holt of Danville, Va.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Yanceyville Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Marie Reid. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Marley Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 this evening.
Mrs. Virginia Thompson
MEBANE - Mrs. Virginia Clark Thompson, 72, of 607 Carr St., died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Tyson Robert Thompson, and the daughter of Mr. Leo F. Clark and Mrs. Verta Waddell Clark, both deceased. She was retired from Kingsdown Mattress Factory and was a member of First Baptist Church of Mebane.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Brenda Abernathy of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Ann Benton of Graham; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Walker’s Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by Dr. Terry Farmer. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will be at Walker’s Funeral Home one hour before the service.
Mrs. Edith F. Bryant
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Edith Louise Finocchi Bryant, 70, of 627 N. Church St., Apt. G-4, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at her home after several years of failing health.
A native of Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Mr. Rocco Finocchi and Mrs. Camelle Finocchi, both deceased. She was retired from Tower Hosiery Mill.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Brenda Bryant Clayton of Angier; a sister, Miss Jessie Finocchi of Boston; a brother, Mr. Tony Finocchi of Boston.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington.
The family will be at the funeral home following the service.
Mrs. Mary Nelson
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mary A. Nelson, 51, of 1940 Arbor Drive, died at 8:25 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
A native of Claypool, Ind., she was the wife of Mr. Michael A. Nelson, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Dale Kimes and Mrs. Grace Emma Gay Kimes, both deceased. She was retired from the men’s clothing department of Belk’s of Burlington. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Ms. Melissa Ann Nelson of Burlington; a son, Mr. Michael A. Nelson II of Graham; two sisters, Mrs. Beverly Hendrickson and Mrs. Mardell Hammack, both of Claypool, Ind.; a stepmother, Mrs. Wanette Kimes of Tavares, Fla.; two stepsisters, Ms. Tona Meredith of Sarasota, Fla., and Mrs. Marinelle Waldren of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington by Dr. Charles Williams, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington.

Mr. Vern R. Warren
BURLINGTON - Mr. Vern Robert Warren, 72, of 2317 McKinney St., died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at his home after four years of failing health, one day critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Alene Sutton Warren, who survives, and the son of Mr. Willis D. Warren and Mrs. Mary Evans Warren, both deceased. He was a retired employee of AT&T and was active with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of Eastlawn Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Royal Ambassadors.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Dale Robert Warren of Raleigh; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Linda H. Cooper of Snow Camp; a sister, Mrs. Fern Warlick of Burlington; a half-sister, Mrs. Georgia Lee Brensinger of Welcome, Md.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Ruth Sharpe; and two brothers, Mr. Herbert Warren and Mr. Willis D. Warren Jr.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Terry Pritchard, interim pastor of Eastlawn Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
