Mr. C. William Yates
RALEIGH - Mr. Charles William “Bill” Yates, 67, of 5908 Spring Valley Drive, died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at his home.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Virginia Scarborough Yates, who survives, and the won of Mr. Charlie Claude Yates and Mrs. Vergie Mae Wilson Yates, both deceased.
He graduated from Burlington High School in 1950 and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1954 with a bachelor of science degree in accounting. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a special agent with the Counter Intelligence Corps in Munich, Germany. He joined Westinghouse Corp. in 1956, where he was responsible for material handling. He retired in 1990 from A.B.B. as manager of purchasing. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Robert Eugene (Debora Yates) Owens II of Louisburg and Mrs. Timothy Ward (Anne Winfield Yates) Bryggman of Helena, Mont.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Jim Wilson, pastor of St. James United Methodist Church, with Dr. Ben Barker and Mr. M. Douglas Gill, celebrants. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home in Burlington from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Wallace L. Burke
YANCEYVILLE - Mr. Wallace L. Burke Sr., 76, formerly of Yanceyville, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Person County Memorial Hospital in Roxboro.
Born in Alamance County on Nov. 30, 1921, he was the husband of Mrs. Corinna P. Burke, who survives, and the son of Mr. Claude W. “Bunk” Burke and Mrs. Flora Nicks Burke. He lived most of his life in Yanceyville, where he served as a volunteer fireman and a member of the American Legion Post 89. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Yanceyville United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Wallace L. Burke Jr. of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Linda B. Bray of Blanch; three sisters, Ms. Alice R. Sutton, Ms. Dora Ann B. Butler and Ms. Betsy B. Watkins, all of Burlington; four brothers, Mr. Norman L. “Spider” Burke, Mr. Robert C. Burke and Mr. Raymond L. Burke, all of Burlington, and Mr. H. Hilton Burke of Columbia, S.C.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hooper Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. L.L. Watlington and the Rev. Vasser Jones. Burial will be in Yanceyville United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and at other times at the home of the daughter, 4073 Blanch Road.
Mrs. Ollie I. Gilliam
GRAHAM - Mrs. Ollie Ivey Gilliam, 93, of 704 W. Harden St., died at 1:10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Edwin Holt Gilliam, who died in 1976, and the daughter of Mr. William A. Ivey and Mrs. Mattie Perry Ivey. She was a homemaker and a life member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Graham, where she was a member of the Doris Crissman Sunday School Class and a life member of the United Methodist Women.
Survivors include three sons, Mr. Gene Gilliam of Rocky Mount, Mr. Ivey Gilliam of Chester, Va., and Mr. Ed Gilliam of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Furst United Methodist Church of Graham by the Rev. Paul Phillips and the Rev. Robert K. Eldredge. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in graham from 7 to 9 this evening.

Ms. Dorothy H. Mitchell
YANCEYVILLE - Ms. Dorothy Holt Mitchell, 69, of 250 E. Main St., died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at her home.
Born May 12, 1929, in Sanford, she was the wife of the late Mr. Ralph Turner Mitchell, who died in 1985, and the daughter of Mr. Robert Holt and Mrs. Nora McDuffie Holt. She was retired from North Carolina Department of Corrections after 23 years of service. She was a member of Yanceyville Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Anita M. Lunsford of Leavenworth, Kan.; a brother, Mr. Lewis Holt of Danville, Va.; and two granchildren.

Mrs. Betsy U. Lawson
MEBANE - Mrs. Betsy Underwood Lawson, 56, of 2851 Idlewood Drive, died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after an illness of four years.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Johnny Ray Lawson, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Jesse Hicks and Mrs. Mae Hicks Foust, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include three daughters, Ms. Lou Ann Steele and Mrs. Tracey Stallings, both of Reidsville, and Ms. Wendy Chamberlain of Florida; a son, Mr. Norman Ray Underwood Jr. of Reidsville; a stepdaughter, Miss Melissa Lawson of Bristol, Tenn.; a stepson, Mr. Joe Lawson of Rogersville, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Harry (Jesse) Finley of Lake Gaston and Mrs. Robert (Virginia) Bush of Graham; four brothers, Mr. Donald Hicks of Efland, Mr. Bill Hicks of Mebane, Mr. Waltzie Hicks of Burlington and Mr. Jerry Foust of Madison; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by Dr. Keith Moore and the Rev. Samuel “Buck” Jones. Burial will be in Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. David L. McCollum
BURLINGTON - Mr. David Lee McCollum, 72, of 516 Trail Eight, died at 11:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center after three years of failing health.
A native of Danville, Va., he was the son of Mr. William Lee McCollum and Mrs. Lena Mae Jackson McCollum, both deceased. He was the former administrative assistant to the division superintendent of Dan River Mills in Danville, Va., and production coordinator with Burlington Industries. He retired from Century 21 of the Carolinas as director of training in North Carolina and South Carolina. He was a member of Danville Masonic Lodge and a former member of the Burlington Cotillion Club and the Alamance Jazz Club. He was a member, choir member, Sunday school teacher and member of the church orchestra at First Baptist Church of Burlington.
Survivors include a brother, the Rev. William McCollum of Winston-Salem.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Philip Hughes. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville.
The family will be at the home.
Mr. Robert E. Vancil
BURLINGTON - Mr. Robert E. “Bobby” Vancil, 44, of 2005 Valley Court, Clayton, died at 11:10 am. Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at Meadowland Nursing Center in Hillsborough after a critical illness of three weeks.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mrs. Theda Wrenn Vancil, who survives. He was the supervisor for Hamby Textile Research Labs, a division of Du Pont.
Survivors other than his mother of Burlington include a daughter Ms. Tara Lynn Vancil of Burlington; a son, Mr. Brian Charles Vancil and Mr. Tyler Matthew Vancil, both of Burlington; and a sister, Mrs. Patricia Clark of Elon College.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. R.E.L. Moser. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 4 to 6 this afternoon, and at other times at the home of the mother, 816 Stockard St., Burlington.
Mrs. Juanita Johnson
ROXBORO - Mrs. Juanita Wallace Johnson, 63, of 425 Wimbledon Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Person County Memorial Hospital.
A native of Humphries County, Tenn., she was the wife of Mr. Larry J. Johnson, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Arthur Franklin Wallace and Mrs. Evelyn Matlock Wallace, both deceased. She was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church and was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Roxboro Christian Women’s Club.
Survivors other than her husband include two daughters, Mrs. Lanita J. Presson of Greensboro and Ms. Becky L. Johnson of Raleigh; a son, Mr. Bill Johnson of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Wanda W. Collins of Portland, Tenn.; two brother, Mr. Bobby W. Wallace of Nashville, Tenn., and Mr. Gary “Butch” Wallace of Portland, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Long Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. William D. Sabiston III and Dr. Wallace Kirby. Burial will be in Portland Memorial Gardens in Portland, Tenn.
The family will be at Brooks and White Funeral Home from 7 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

MEBANE - Mrs. Dorothy Nadine Terry Carden, 71, of 5208 Mount Willing Road, died at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a two-week illness.
Born in Alamance County on March 29, 1927, she was the wife of the late Mr. George Carden, and the daughter of Mr. Jack Terry and Mrs. Eula Albright Terry, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Donna Whitfield of Mebane; two sisters, Mrs. Nell Morris and Mrs. Violet Phillips, both of Mebane; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Lighthouse Baptist Church by the Rev. Fleet Milsap. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Yvonne Handschuh Brown, 68, of 2435-K Moran St., died at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at her home after an illness of 2½ years.
A native of Baltimore, she was the wife of Mr. James A. Brown, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Adam Handschuh and Mrs. Naomi Orra Wilson Handschuh, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of First Reformed United Church of Christ.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Amy Jo Nicholson of Snow Camp; two sons, Mr. Christopher Brown of Burlington and Mr. David James Brown of Dallas; a sister, Mrs. Deloris Appling of Baltimore; a brother, Mr. Adam Handschuh of Hampstead, Md.; and four grandchildren.
