Mr. Joseph Zdanowicz
GARDNER, Mass. - Mr. Joseph E. Zdanowicz, 76, of 32 Lennon St., died Tuesday evening, Nov. 10, 1998, at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
A native of Gardner, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Mary G. Karpeichik Zdanowicz, and the son of Mr. Stephen Zdanowicz and Mrs. Leonarda Hajdukiewicz Zdanowicz, both deceased. He retired in 1987 from Simplex Time Recorder Co. as a machine shop setup man. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the African / European Theatre and received the Good Conduct Medal, EAME Campaign Ribbon with four battle stars and a Bronze Arrowhead. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 905, Greater Gardner Polish American Veterans and Polish American Citizens and Country Clubs. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Gardner.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Maryann Autio of Hillsborough; a sister, Mrs. Sophie Belsky of Gardner; two brothers, Mr. Victor Zdanowicz of Gibsonville and Mr. Chester Zdanowicz of Littleton, Mass; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday at Poliks Funeral Home in Gardner, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery.
The family will be at Poliks Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Mr. Walter Wilson
BURLINGTON - Mr. Walter Wilson, 83, of 323 Baldwin Road, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after an illness of several days.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Ida Enoch Wilson, who survives, and the son of the Rev. Willie Wilson and Mrs. Maythene Martin Wilson, both deceased. He was retired from farming and the textile industry.
Survivors include five daughters, Ms. Linda W. McDougle of Greensboro, Ms. Peggy W. Morgan of Fairfield, Conn., Ms. Betty W. Brown of Elon College, Ms. Sue W. Yates of Indialantic, Fla., and Ms. Barbara W. Blackwell of Browns Summit; three sisters, Ms. Nellie Hayes of Maryland, Ms. Thelma Wilson of California and Ms. Christine Jeffries of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. John Wilson of Florida and Mr. Floyd Coy Wilson of California; 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Martin’s Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Henry L. Simmons, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening.
Mrs. Ersel B. Byrd
MEBANE - Mrs. Ersel Barts Byrd, 60, of 5901 Lynch Store Road, died at 6:45 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at her home after two years of failing health, three months critical.
A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of Mr. Bobby Frank Byrd, who survives, and the daughter of Elder Lee Barts and Mrs. Flora Carmichael Barts, both deceased. She was retired from Peaches and Cream and was a member of Mount Zion Christian Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Bobbie B. Underwood and Miss Rachel Byrd, both of Mebane; a son, Mr. Danny F. Byrd of Mebane; a sister, Mrs. Nellie B. Hamlett of Leasburg; two brothers, Mr. R.D. Barts of Cedar Grove and Mr. Earl J. Barts of Lillington; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Curnel Lee Barts.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Christian Church cemetery by the Rev. Howard Silver.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home.
Ms. Marie Kirkpatrick
FLORENCE, S.C. - Ms. Marie Kirkpatrick of Patriots Place, Apt. B-2C, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at her home.

Mr. Ralph T. Tillman
BURLINGTON - Mr. Ralph T. Tillman, 84, of 1202 E. Willowbrook Drive, died at 1:15 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center of Alamance after six years of failing health, one month critical.
A native of Bynum, he was the husband of Mrs. Iris Pyle Tillman, who survives, and the son of Mr. Daniel Tillman and Mrs. Annie Hearne Tillman, both deceased. He was the retired owner and operator of Tillman Jewelry and was an entrepreneur.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Ms. Sally Moore of Burlington and Mrs. Gary (Danelle) Hills of Burlington; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Max Allman, pastor of People’s Memorial Christian Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Gary (Danelle) Hills, 1931 Malone Road, Burlington.

Mr. John D. Kavanaugh
BURLINGTON - Mr. John Daniel “Jack” Kavanaugh, 66, of 3121 Truitt Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at home after a long illness.
A native of Cohoes, N.Y., he was the husband of Mrs. Helen Murphy Kavanaugh, who survives, and the son of Mr. Norman V. Kavanaugh, who survives, and the late Mrs. Madeline Ryan Kavanaugh. He retired from General Electric as manager of engineering and manufacturing after 35 years of service. He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, N.Y., and Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, N.Y. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and father of Burlington include three daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Kavanaugh Smith of Norcross, Ga., Mrs. Margaret Kavanaugh Roessler of Little River, S.C., and Mrs. Susan Kavanaugh Duffus of Raleigh; a son, Mr. John Thomas Kavanaugh of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Norman V. Kavanaugh of Ellenburg, N.Y., and Mr. Paul K. Kavanaugh of East Hampton, N.J.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Mark Paul Kavanaugh.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. John J. Murphy of Catskill, N.Y., and the Rev. Terry Pescatore, pastor of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 9 Friday evening, and at other times at the home. A prayer service will be conducted at 8 p.m.

Mr. James A. Gammon
SYLVA - Mr. James Arnold “Arnie” Gammon, 69, of 60 Schulman St., died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, after a short illness.
Born Nov. 24, 1928, in Burlington, he was the husband for 27 years of Mrs. Brenda Gammon, who survives, and the son of Mr. Arnold Gammon and Mrs. Essie Mae Rumple Gammon, both deceased. He was a lifelong entertainer who performed music and comedy. He performed in the United States, including the Johnny Carson Show and the Ed Sullivan Show, and overseas. He and his twin brother, Mr. Ron Gammon, performed a musical comedy called “The Mavericks.” In 1972, he and his wife moved to Cherokee. He was first employed at Frontierland and for the last 22 years, he was Mr. Mystic the magician at Santa’s Land in Cherokee.
Survivors other than his wife of Sylva include three daughters, Ms. Dana McGovern of Clearwater, Fla., Ms. Lisa Nicholes of Niceville and Ms. Lisa Gammon of Cherokee; five sons, Mr. Jay Gammon of High Point, Mr. Jan Gammon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mr. Mark McGovern of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Mr. Michael Gammon of Chico, Calif., and Mr. Christopher Gammon of Sylva; two sisters, Ms. Dorothy Spiesman of Ohio and Ms. Connie Clark of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Ron Gammon of Cullowhee; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Randy Gammon.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 30 in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home in Sylva by the Rev. Bob Highdon.
Miss Viola Williamson
ROBBINS - Miss Viola Grace Williamson, 70, of 395 Arthur Road, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at her home.
A native of Davidson County, she was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Sunday School Class No. 9. She was a retired employee of Milliken Co. in Robbins.
Survivors include two sisters, Ms. Doris W. Carswell of Richmond, Va., and Ms. Margaret W. Hussey of Robbins; and a brother, Mr. Charles C. Williamson of Graham.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Smyrna United Methodist Church by the Rev. J.R. Tatum. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Luella J. Bigelow
YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Luella Jeffries Bigelow, 98, of 5620 Old N.C. 86 North, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at her home.
Born April 29, 1900, in Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Moses Bigelow Sr. and the daughter of Mr. Travis Jeffries and Mrs. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Toney Jeffries, both deceased. She was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church, where he was the Mother of the Church and served in the Missionary Circle and sang in the choir. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include four daughter, Mrs. Juanita Yancey of Danville, Va., Mrs. Estella Short of Eden, Mrs. Luella Blackwell of Norfolk, Va., and Mrs. Jane Dildy of Yanceyville; three sons, Mr. Charles Bigelow of Yanceyville, Mr. Fred Bigelow of Mount Vernon, N.Y., and Mr. James Bigelow of Providence; a brother, Mr. Joe A. Jeffries of Pelham; 26 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sassafras Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Carl Bigleow. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Fulton Funeral Home. The family will be at the home.
Mrs. Edna L. Russell
GRAHAM - Mrs. Edna Lindley Russell, 94, of 3960 Russell Road, died at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center after several years of falling health.
A native of Chatham County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Fred M. Russell and the daughter of Mr. Cicero Newton Lindley and Mrs. Margaret Ann Johnson Lindley, both deceased. She was the retired cafeteria manager of Eli Whitney Elementary School and a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Janice Russell Cottle of Graham; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Lindley McBane of Graham; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Elaine B. Hargrove.

GRAHAM - Mrs. Rochell Williams Spoon, 85, of 4822 Snow Camp Road, died at 4:25 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at her home after one year of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Herman Ester Spoon, and the daughter of Mr. John Williams and Mrs. Ora McVey Williams, both deceased. She was retired from Dixie Yarns and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Crawford and Mrs. Nora Shelley, both of Graham; a son, Mr. Clarence Spoon of Snow Camp; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.
