Mrs. Clara F. Enoch
DURHAM - Mrs. Clara Fuller Enoch, 77, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, in the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was the wife of the late Mr. Tom Enoch. She had been a resident of the Brian Center for the past five years.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Joy Enoch Nichols of Durham; four sons, Mr. Bobby Enoch of Washington, D.C., Mr. James Enoch and Mr. Carl Enoch, both of Durham; and Mr. Thomas Enoch of Charlotte; and 11 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Ronnie 'Butch' Enoch.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Miles Chapel Baptist Church in Mebane. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Enoch Cemetery.
Scarborough and Hargett Funeral Home in Durham is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hazel Cardwell
MEBANE - Mrs. Hazel K. Cardwell, 83, of Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, died at 3:10 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 1998, at Presbyterian Home of Hawfields after two years of failing health. She was a former resident of Wagoner Road, Elon College.
A native of High Point, she was the wife of the late Mr. Woodrow Fields and the late Mr. Grover Cardwell, and the daughter of Mr. William Kirkman and Mrs. Martisha Jones Kirkman, both deceased. She was retired from Liberty Hosiery and was a member of First Wesleyan Church and the Janie Wilson Sunday school class.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn F. Dennis of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Lake Lineberry of Gray's Chapel and Mrs. Evelyn Hill of High Point; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Howard Kirkman and Mr. Lloyd Kirkman.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Wesleyan Church by the Rev. Ronnie Jones. Burial will be in Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery in Climax.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of the daughter, 717 S. Sellars Mill Road, Burlington.
Memorials may be made to First Wesleyan Church, 304 S. Anthony St. Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Mrs. Gertrude Faucette
NEW JERSEY - Mrs. Gertrude Faucette, 100, died Friday, July 24, 1998, in East Orange General Hospital.
Born Feb. 6, 1898, in Hillsborough, she was the daughter of Mr. William Faucette and Mrs. Rebecca Lee Faucette, both deceased.
Survivors include a niece and a nephew.
The funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Chavis-Parker Funeral Chapel in Hillsborough by the Rev. George Allison. Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery in Hillsborough.

Ms. Tessie M. Bell
DURHAM - Ms. Tessie Jane Mebane Bell, 76, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at Duke University Medial Center.
Born Dec. 8, 1921, in Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mr. Herbert Eugene Mebane and Mrs. Lillie Mae Hazel Mebane, both deceased.
Survivors include four daughters, Ms. Nevary Ewing of Greensboro, and Ms. Delois Bell, Ms. Lillie Wright and Ms. Sarah Eubanks, all of Durham; six sons, Mr. Robert Bell Jr., Mr. James Bell, Mr. Jesse Bell, Mr. Carl Bell, Mr. Larry Bell and Mr. Joseph Bell, all of Durham; two sisters, Ms. Alice Liggins and Ms. Lucinda Mebane, both of Burlington; a brother, Mr. James Mebane of Burlington; 32 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Scarborough and Hargett Funeral Chapel in Durham. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Peggy M. Coe
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Peggy Wood Martin Coe, 63, of 4418 N.C. 62 South, died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 1998, in Alamance County after a sudden illness.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Richard H. Martin and the late Mr. Charles R. Coe. She was the daughter of Mrs. Hilda Roney Wood, who survives, and the late Mr. Jesse C. Wood. She was a semiretired sitter with the elderly and a member of First Baptist Church of Haw River.
Survivors other than her mother of Swepsonville include a daughter, Mrs. Jan Parks of Asheboro; three sons, Mr. Leon Martin of Burlington, Mr. Ronnie Martin of Asheboro and Mr. Mark Martin of Lexington; four sisters, Mrs. Dot Bell of Denton, Mrs. Carolyn Champion of Reidsville, Mrs. Sylvia Gant of Greensboro and Mrs. Velinda Becraft of Pleasant Garden; five brothers, Mr. Gerald Wood of Mebane, Mr. Johnnie Wood of Swepsonville, Mr. Michael Wood of Macon, Ga., Mr. Joel Wood of Adrain, Mich., and Mr. Timothy Wood of Greensboro; and 10 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by death by two sisters, Mrs. Shirley Sibersen and Miss Marie Wood.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church cemetery by the Rev. Don Clement, pastor of Swepsonville Baptist Church, and the Rev. James Christopher, pastor of People's Church.

Mrs. Nell Smith
MEBANE - Mrs. Nell Smith, 72, of 607 N. Charles St., died at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at her home after several weeks of failing health.
A native of China Grove, she was the wife of Mr. Robert A. "Bobby" Smith, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Fred Upright and Mrs. Georgia Carroll Upright, both deceased. She was a former employee of Western Electric Co. and was a member of First Baptist Church of Mebane, where she was active in various church activities.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, Mr. Phil A. Smith and Mr. Dennis J. Smith, both of Mebane; a sister, Mrs. Helen Boswell of Burlington; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Fred Houston "Buck" Upright; and a sister, Mrs. Pauline Elizabeth Casten.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Mebane by the Rev. Charles Fleshman and Dr. Charles Lemley. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Mr. John Pennix
MEBANE - Mr. John "Buster" Pennix, 36, of 6790 Burton Chapel Road, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at Nash County General Hospital in Rocky Mount after a sudden illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the son of Mrs. Bessie Pennix Clemons, who survives, and the Mr. John A. Mitchell. He was a cook with Flying J Restaurant in Haw River.
Survivors other than his mother and stepfather, Mr. Johnnie Clemons, of the home include a sister, Ms. Sonya Daye of Roxboro; a brother, Mr. Eric Clemons of Mebane; and paternal grandparents, Mr. John Mitchell and Mrs. Esther Mitchell, both of Blanch.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mr. Charlie Pennix and Mrs. Ious Pennix.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Sweet Gum Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Vanhook and the Rev. James Tinnin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Clayborn T. Brown
REIDSVILLE - Mr. Clayborn T. Brown, 89, of 2438 Turner Road, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Rosa Lee Sellars Brown, and the son of Mr. James Lafayette Brown and Mrs. Annie Williamson Brown, both deceased. He was a retired farmer and machine operator. He was a member of Carlett Memorial Church, where he was a deacon.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Alice Marie Clark of Burlington, Mrs. Sallie Mae Thompson and Mrs. Jean Elaine Evans, both of Graham, and Mrs. Rosa Ann Watts of Grier, S.C.; three sons, Mr. William Thomas Brown of Burlington, Mr. Robert Eugene Brown and Mr. James Lafayette Brown, both of Reidsville; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Jenkins of Xenia, Ohio; a brother, Mr. Clifton Brown of Elon College; 30 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Clayborn F. Brown Jr. and Mr. John Lee Brown.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Corbett Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Floyd Corbett. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Theodore Burton
GREENSBORO - Mr. Theodore R. "Ted" Burton of 305 Miltwood Road, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at his home.
A native of Albany, N.Y., he was the husband of Mrs. Anita M. Burton, who survives. He was a graduate of Albany Academy. He served with the Merchant Marine / Coast Guard in the South Pacific area during World War II. He settled in Greensboro 34 years ago and established Commercial Refrigeration Dist. Inc. He was a member of Westover Church, where he served as a deacon, elder and missions committee chairman. He was also a member of the Gideons Internatinal and the Christina Business Men's Committee - CBMC - of USA. After his retirement as president of his company, he became a staff man for CBMC USA and oversaw committees in Greensboro, High Point, Burlington, Winston-Salem, Concord, Lexington and Morganton.
Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Gail) Joyner of Greenville and Mrs. Robert (Kathy) Meacham of Matthews; a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Emma of Binghamton, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.
Following a private burial in Westminster Gardens, a memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at Westover Church, by Mr. Donald B. Miller, pastor.

Mr. Chambers Laird
ORANGE PARK, Fla. - Mr. Chambers Goode Laird, 71, of Orange Park, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at St. Vincent's Medical Center. He was a former resident of Mebane.
Born Oct. 14, 1926, in Greensboro, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Marie Couturier Laird, and the son of Mr. Thomas Holt Laird and Mrs. Marguerite Goode Laird, both deceased. He received an associate of arts degree from Florida Junior College of Jacksonville and was U.S. Navy veteran. He was a lifelong member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church. He was a Mason.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kevin R. (Edith Marguerite) Hayes of Orange Park; a son, Mr. Holt Laird of Middleburg, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Mary Kerncamp and Ms. Louise Laird; and a brother, Mr. Thomas Holt Laird II.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Carol Fisher. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ms. Etta M. Martin
GIBSONVILLE - Ms. Etta Mae Martin, 84, of 603 Burlington Road, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, July 25, 1998, at Alamance Health Care Center in Burlington after several years of failing health.
A native of Guilford County, she was the daughter of Mr. Eddie Martin and Mrs. Rosa Miles Martin, both deceased. She was a member of United Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Greensboro.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bettie Martin Clapp of Westbury, N.Y., and Mrs. Geraldine Martin Smith of the home; three sons, Mr. George P. "G.P." Martin of Richmond, Va., Mr. Floyd J. Martin of Landover, Md., and Mr. Jim H. Martin Sr., of Westbury; a foster daughter, Mrs. Alvenia Richmond Beasley of Hyattsville, Md.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer United Church of Christ by the Rev. Robert A. McLaughlin, pastor of United Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Hazel S. Payne
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Hazel S. Payne, 80, of Alamance Health Care Center died at 4:34 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center, after one year of failing health. She was formerly of Cates Circle, Graham.
A native of Rowan County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William Anderson "Bill" Payne, and the daughter of Mr. William Shives and Mrs. Pearl Jordan Shives, both deceased. She was retired from J. Spencer Love Hosiery Mill and was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church for more than 50 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Richard A. (Pearl ) Jordan Jr. and Ms. Glenda Melton, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Richard (Becky) Hobson of Graham; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy "Dot" Maner of Salisbury; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ora Peck; and four brothers, Mr. Johnny Shives, Mr. Robert Shives, Mr. Ray Allmond and Mr. Eb Allmond.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Deep Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. James Moon, pastor, and the Rev. Bennie Smith, pastor of Staley Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Deep Creek Baptist Church, c/o Mrs. James (Shirley) Jefferson, 2262 Roney Lineberry Road, Burlington, N.C. 27217.
