Mr. Hal H. Garner
ASHEBORO - Mr. Hal Harrison Garner, 74, of 400 Steele St., Gibsonville, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham.
A native of Randolph County, he was the former operator of Snow White Drive Inn. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and First Baptist Church in Gibsonville.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Elaine Garner Collins of Asheboro; one son, Mr. Kent B. Garner of Robbins; one brother, Mr. Blease Garner of Asheboro and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, by the Rev. Jim Smyrl. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro.
The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro 7 to 9 this evening.

Mr. James E. Pettie
BURLINGTON - Mr. James Edward Pettie, 72, of 805 S. Broad St., died at 11:44 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at the Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Henry County, Va., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Lois Hines Pettie and the son of Mr. Peter Henry Pettie and Mrs. Judith Harrison Pettie, both deceased. He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Jennifer Pettie of the home, and one son, Mr. Kenneth J. Pettie of Hempstead, N.Y.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hargett & Bryant Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Larry L. Covington, pastor of Ebenezer United Church of Christ. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home 30 minutes before the service, and at other times at the home.
Mr. William C. Hester
BURLINGTON - Mr. William C. 'Bill' Hester, 74, of 1001 N. Main St., died at 11:09 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., after an illness of two weeks, one week critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. William Lee Hester and Mrs. Daisy Ella Wyatt Hester, both deceased. He was in the U.S. Air Force for 15 years and was a Captain during World War II. He was the retired owner of an automobile parts distribution store. He was a member of Long's Chapel United Church of Christ and attended Piedmont Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a brother, Mr. Edward Lee Hester of Burlington.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Veterans Section of Pine Hill cemetery by the Rev. Morton Kurtz, pastor of Piedmont Presbyterian Church.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 10 to 10:45 Saturday morning.

Mrs. Marjorie Robertson
ROXBORO - Mrs. Marjorie Dunn Robertson, 62, of 1313 Griles St., died Wednesday evening, Jan. 14, 1998, at Pettigrew Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Durham after a long illness.
A native of Person County, she was the wife of Mr. Joe E. Robertson, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Mexter Dunn and Mrs. Orphia Bryant Dunn, both deceased. She was a retired nursing assistant and a member of North Roxboro Baptist Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sisters, Mrs. Faye D. Porterfield of Rougemont and Ms. Goldie Dunn of Durham, and two brothers, Mr. Tom Dunn and Mr. Norwood Dunn, both of Asheville.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at North Roxboro Baptist Church by the Rev. Ken Durham and the Rev. Mark Sterling. Burial will be in Providence Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will be at Strickland Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Florence Woodward
HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Mrs. Florence Lee Coward Woodward, 77, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998.
A native of Erwin, Tenn., she was the wife of the late Mr. Garrett Woodward, and the daughter of Mr. John E. Coward and Mrs. Rowe Smith Coward, both deceased. She was a retired school teacher and a former member of Faith Covenant Church in Florence, S.C.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Gary Woodward of Matthews and Mr. Bill Woodward of Raleigh; two brothers, Mr. Bill Coward of Sumter, S.C., and Mr. Jim Coward of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.; one sister, Ms. Ruth Coward of Erwin, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Magnolia cemetery in Hartsville by the Rev. Alvin Cribb and the Rev. Robert Waites.
The family will be at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in Hartsville from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. today.
Mrs. Kate I. Daigle
MEBANE - Mrs. Kate Irene Daigle, 81, of 2000 E. Hillcrest St., Apt. 612, Orlando, Fla., died at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at the home of her son, Mr. Fred E. Daigle Jr., after a sudden illness.
A native of Colquitt, Ga., she was the wife of the late Mr. Fred E. Daigle Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Charles Columbus Adams and Mrs. Mossouria Elizabeth Parker Adams, both deceased. She was a retired nurse's aide and was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Orlando.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kathryn D. Seiavitch, of Bow, N.H.; two sons, Mr. Fred E. Daigle Jr. of Mebane and Mr. John 'Joe' Daigle of St. Cloud, Fla; a brother, Mr. Frank Adams of Newberry Park, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Sunday in Orlando.

Mr. Wilbert Freeman
GREENSBORO - Mr. Wilbert Freeman, 75, of 1604 Random Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
A Guilford County native, he was retired from Wysong and Miles Co. and was Baptist.
Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Jean Freeman of Burlington and Ms. Rebecca Ann Meetze of Greensboro; two sons, Mr. James Farmer and Mr. Wilbert Donald Freeman, both of Greensboro; a brother, Mr. Kenneth Freeman of Greensboro; three sisters, Ms. Dorothy Ross of Pennsylvania, Ms. Mary Jenkins and Ms. Elaine Woods, both of Greensboro; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel with burial in Westminster Gardens Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.
Mr. John Burwell Jr.
WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. John William Burwell Jr., 76, of Dalton Road, King, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Born Jan. 18, 1921, he was the son of Mr. John William Burwell Sr. and Mrs. Edna Rebecca Page Burwell, both deceased. He spent most of his life in Stokes County and was a graduate of Nancy Reynolds High School. He attended Elon College and Burlington Business College. He was the owner and operator of Modern Poultry Co. in High Point from 1949 to 1967. He dealt in real estate and construction in Winston-Salem for many years and retired in 1985 from the N.C. Department of Transportation as a Division Auditor. He was a member of Poplar Springs Church of Christ.
A member of King Lions Club, he was a past president of the N.C. Jaycee's in High Point, a past Master of the Masonic Lodge 681 in High Point, past president and board member of the N.C. Poultry Processors' Association, a board member of the Southeastern Poultry & Egg Association of Atlanta and the National Broiler Association in Washington, D.C. He served on the Board of Piedmont Heath Systems Agency and was on the board and a director of the Greater Winston-Salem YMCA. He was involved in the Democratic Party since 1942, was appointed to the Governor's Highway Safety Association and was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the Governor of North Carolina in 1985.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Norman (Rebecca B.) Simpson of Hickory, Mrs. Thomas (Deborah B.) Atkinson of Apex; three sisters; four brothers, including Joe Burwell of Burlington; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Poplar Springs Church of Christ by the Rev. Ralph Sproles. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel from 5 to 8 this evening.

Mrs. Helen L. Staley
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Helen Long Staley, 80, of 1331 Burlingate Place, died at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. W. Dowd Staley, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. John Wesley Long and Mrs. Eva Mitchell Long, both deceased. She was a retired employee of Kayser-Roth Hosiery and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elon College where she was a member of the Wesleyan Sunday School Class.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include one son, Mr. Don C. Staley of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Mrs. Ruby L. Turnage of Cheraw, S.C., Mrs. Doris L. Durham and Mrs. Clarice L. Durham, both of Burlington and Mrs. Laura Jean Hensley of China Grove; and one brother, Mr. J. Byron Long of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Randall Innes. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Jesse D. Smith
BURLINGTON - Mr. Jesse D. Smith, 85, of 310 N.C. 87 North, died at 10:05 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at Twin Lakes Center in Burlington after several years of failing health.
A native of Granville, he was the husband of Mrs. Madeline Parker Smith, and the son of Mr. John Writer Smith and Mrs. Corda Tharrington Smith, both deceased. He was retired from Burlington Industries and was a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington, where he was a member of the C.C. Linneman Sunday school class.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. James L. (Maxine) Nichols of Grapevine, Texas; three brothers, Mr. Robert Smith, Mr. Andrew Smith and Mr. John W. Smith, all of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Georgia Lee Sullivan of Dewitt, Va., and Mrs. Edna Montgomery of Burlington; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Ralph Smith; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann Martin and Mrs. Suzie Guthrie.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Burlington by Dr. Craig T. McMahan, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
