Mrs. Mary H. Farrell
ELON COLLEGE - Mrs. Mary Frances Hopson Farrell, 66, of 731 Walker Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Durham County, she was the wife of the late Mr. James Alfred Farrell and the daughter of Mr. Leo Bennen Hopson and Mrs. Betty May Harris Hopson Lawrence. She was a homemaker and a charter member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Routh of Burlington; a son, Mr. Terry Farrell of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Betty Howell of Bakersville; a brother, Mr. Otis Hopson of Snow Camp; and 3 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Mr. Otto Lawrence.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Randy Hobbs, pastor, the Rev. Tim Stevens, pastor of Whitsett Baptist Church, and Mrs. Jack Howell. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at home.

Ms. Willa M. Leath
BURLINGTON - Ms. Willa Mae Leath, 56, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at her home in New York.
Born March 5, 1943, in Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mr. Willie Jeff Leath and Mrs. Clencie Leath, who both survive. She grew up in Alamance County and graduated from Jordan Sellars High School and Burlington Business College. She was youth director of Alamance County Community Action Program for many hears. She was director of “Drug Prevention Program” in New York. She was a writer. She was a member of Morgantown First Baptist Church and a member of the choir for many years.
Survivors other than her parents of Burlington include a daughter, Dr. Stanette Pinnix-Hall of Alpharetta, Ga.; two sons, Mr. Stanley Pinnix Jr. of Gwinette, Ga. and Mr. Arnold G. Pinnix of New York; a sister, Ms. Betty Fahie of Burlington; five brothers, Mr. John Leath, Dr. Douglas Diaab, Mr. David Leath and Mr. Freddie Leath, all of Burlington, and Mr. Ricky Leath of Miami; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Visitor’s Chapel Church.
The family will be at Blackwell Funeral Home from 6 to 7 this evening, and at other times at 231-A Foster St., Burlington.

Mr. Ronnie E. Scott
GRAHAM - Mr. Ronnie E. Scott, 55, of 716 Ward St., died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a critical illness of one day.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mrs. Mae Bradshaw Scott, who survives, and the late Mr. Chester E. Scott.
Survivors include his mother of the home.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Travis Dean Scott.
A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Jack Rheburg. A private burial will be at a later date.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham following the memorial service.

Mrs. Jessie R. Baker
GRAHAM - Mrs. Jessie Rector Baker, 60, of 19150 N.W. 38 Ave., Carol City, Fla., died at 3:10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at her home. She was formerly of Woodland Avenue of Burlington.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Scott F. Baker Jr., who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Jessie Daniel Rector Sr. and Mrs. Eva Mae Rhodes Rector, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Southside Mission.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, Mr. David Paul Baker of Fort Myers, Fla., and Mr. Jeffrey Bryon Baker of Vera Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Marie Kmiciak of El Sobrante, Calif., Mrs. Margaret Wilkerson of Mebane and Mrs. Inez Smith of Burlington; a brother, Mr. J.D. Rector Jr. of Arcadia, Fla.; and two half sisters, Mrs. Ruth Jones of Taylors, S.C., and Mrs. Daisy Jones of Greenville, S.C.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Scott Edward Baker.
The memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Don Pegg, pastor of Kinnett Memorial Baptist Church.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Burlington from 6 to 7:30 this evening.

Mr. Walter Lewis Jr.
WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Walter Penn Lewis Jr., 68, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at the Oaks at Forsyth.
Born April 16, 1931, in Forsyth County, he was the husband of Mrs. Margaret Fuquay Lewis, who survives, and the son of Mr. Walter Penn Lewis Sr. and Mrs. Helen McBride Lewis, both deceased. He was a retired certified public accountant. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a master’s degree in business administration from Syracuse University. He was a former member and past president of the Winston-Salem Sertoma Club and a member of the Ardmore Community Club. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Gary Lewis of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara (Glenn) Gowdy of Wilmington and Mrs. Susan (Kenneth) Smith of Colombia, Md.; and six grandchildren.
The graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, in Forsyth Memorial Park by the Rev. William Garrard.
The family will be at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem from 7 to 9 Monday evening.
Memorials may be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church or to a charity of choice.

Mrs. Louise Winstead
YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Louise Williamson Winstead, 69, of 162 N.C. 62 South, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va.
Born Nov. 2, 1929, in Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. James Horton Winstead and the daughter of Mr. Elbert C. Williamson and Mrs. Virginia Bowe Williamson, both deceased. She was a member of Pearson Chapel AME Church, where she was president of the usher board and a stewardess. She also was a member of the Allen’s Chapel Order of the Eastern Star No. 529.
Survivors include a daughter, Miss. Carlotta L. Winstead of the home; a son, Mr. James Sidney Winstead of Yanceyville; a brother, Mr. Earl Williamson of Cleveland, Ohio; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday at Pearson Chapel AME Church by the Rev. George Turner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville from 7 to 8 Monday evening and at other times at the home.

Mr. M. Clark Newton
BURLINGTON - Mr. Milton Clark Newton, 86, of Twin Lakes Center, died at 9:25 a.m. Friday, June 4, 1999, at the center.
A native of Norris, S.C., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Ethel Willets Newton and the son of Mr. Dock Miles Newton and Mrs. Alma Nalley Newton, both deceased. He owned and operated City Furniture Co. until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of First Wesleyan Church of Burlington and the Men’s Bible Class. He was a charter member of Alamance Country Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Shirley N. Jones of Newport News, Va., and Mrs. Patricia N. Knowles of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three sons, Mr. Michael Clark Newton of Burlington, Mr. Milton Gray Newton of Greensboro; and Mr. Kenneth Miles Newton of Le High, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Cleo Chandler of Colfax and Mrs. Faith Hobson of Northport, Ala.; three brothers, Mr. Nate Newton of Norris, Mr. Tim Newton of Fayetteville and Mr. Mack Newton of Dothan, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mrs. Ethel N. Childs, Miss Mary Lena Newton, Mrs. Ina N. Lovelace and Mrs. Bula N. Warren; and four brothers, Mr. George Thomas Newton, Mr. Joseph Isaac Newton, Mr. Samuel Carroll Newton and Mr. Jacob Leroy Newton.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Mike McClung. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington one hour before the service and at other times at the home of Mr. Michael Clark Newton, 427 Devonshire Lane, Burlington.
Memorials may be made to Twin Lakes Center, 100 Wade Coble Drive, Burlington, N.C. 27215; or to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Miss Caroline E. Powell
ELON COLLEGE - Miss Caroline Egerton Powell, 92, of 309 E. Haggard Ave., died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 20, 1907, in Warren County, she was the daughter of Mr. Thomas Edward Powell Sr. and Mrs. Clara Bobbitt Powell, both deceased. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Elon College in 1928 and her master’s degree in zoology from Duke University in 1938. She taught biology at Alexander Wilson High School in Hawfields from 1928 to 1930. In 1930, she moved to Salisbury, where she was head of the science department at Boyden High School until 1942. From 1942 to mid-1944, she taught biology at Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh. In August 1944, she joined the staff of Carolina Biological Supply Co. in Burlington as head of the accounts receivable department and the mailing list department. In 1947, she became corporate secretary, a position she held until her death. She served as a member of the board of directors from 1980 to 1992. She was a staff member of Carolina Biological Supply Co. for 55 years. She was listed in the Marquis Who’s Who of American Women and had served as a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Alamance County. She also served as a member of the Women’s Division of the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of Elon College Community Church of the United Church of Christ, where she served as a deacon.
Survivors include five nieces and six nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Mary Brantley Powell, Mrs. Clara Powell Lee and Mrs. Josephine Powell Newell; and one brother, Dr. Thomas Edward Powell Jr.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Elon College Community Church by the Rev. William M. Jeffries and Dr. Kenneth Tyson. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery in Elon College.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times at the home at Willeli, 950 E. Lake Drive, May’s Lake, Burlington.
Memorials may be made to the Elon College Community Church, Box 625, Elon College, N.C. 27244.

Mrs. Florence S. Pace
GRAHAM - The funeral for Mrs. Florence Stone Pace, who died at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Swepsonville Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Clement, pastor.
The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Swepsonville Baptist Church fellowship hall one hour before the service and at other times at the home of Mr. Jim Stone, 2880 Boy Wood Road, Graham.
Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Flossie P. Boone
WHITSETT - Mrs. Flossie Loretta Patrick Boone, 54, of 901 Boonevalley Road, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Arthur Marshall Boone, and the daughter of Mr. Booker T. Patrick and Mrs. Mary Patrick, who both survive. She was an active member of St. John’s AME Church, where she was a trustee, usher, missionary and class leader.
Survivors other than her parents of Gibsonville include a daughter, Mrs. Diane Patrick Henderson of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Timothy Boone of Greensboro and Mr. Marlon Boone of Burlington; five brothers, Mr. Robert Patrick of Sedalia, Mr. Benny Patrick of Greensboro, Mr. Nathaniel Patrick of McLeansville, Mr. Arnold Patrick and Mr. Allen Patrick, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Crutchfield of Gibsonville, Mrs. Laura Harris of Arverne, N.Y., and Ms. Lillie Mae Hagood of Greensboro; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Thomas Cornelious Boone.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. John’s AME Church in Gibsonville. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Clapp’s Chapel AME Church Cemetery.
The family will be at the church 30 minutes before the service and at other times at the home.
Blackwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
