Mr. Earl E. Nealy
CHARLOTTE - Mr. Earl E. Nealy, 76, of Charlotte, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital.
Born Dec. 26, 1922, in Laurenburg, he was the husband of Mrs. Dorothy Britt Nealy, who survives, and the son of Mr. Carden Nealy and Mrs. Robie Stanley Nealy, both deceased. He was retired from the Rexham Corp., and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Survivors other than his wife include two sons, Mr. Michael O. Nealy of Fort Myers, Fla., and Mr. Richard L. Nealy of Mooresville; two brothers, Mr. J.B. Nealy and Mr. Elwood Nealy, both of Charlotte; five sisters, Mr. Berlene Joyce of Charlotte, Ms. Doney May Hogan of Burlington, Ms. Betty Barefoot of Raeford, Ms. Patsy Baxley of Wagram and Ms. Shirley Newsome of Laurenburg; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at McEwen Derita Chapel by the Rev. Sara Elliott. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mr. Curtis Haith
BURLINGTON - Mr. Curtis Haith of West Bonn, Germany, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, in Bonn, Germany. He was a former resident of Burlington.

Mr. Willie B. Davis
MEBANE - Mr. Willie Billie Davis Sr., 74, of 214 Edgewood Church Road, died at 4:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a critical illness of seven weeks.
A native of Cliffside, he was the husband of Mrs. Ruby Williams Davis, who survives, and the son of Mr. Charlie Davis and Mrs. Lettie Pritchard Davis, both deceased. He was retired from Western Electric Co. in Burlington. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he was superintendent of Sunday school, a deacon and a teacher in the men’s Sunday school class. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Bonnie Tate of Prospect Hill and Mrs. Lettie Coble of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Bobby Davis of Burlington and Mr. Willie B. “Bill” Davis Jr. of Mebane; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Tyson of Atlanta, Mrs. Lucy Simmons of Elfand and Mrs. Lillian Gerringer of Elon College; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Leroy Davis; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by Dr. Keith Moore, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home of Mr. Bill Davis, 205 Edgewood Church Road, Mebane, N.C. 27302.
Mrs. Mable H. Rippy
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mable Hanford Rippy, 83, of 1934-A Tucker St., died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at her home after a long illness.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. G.L. Rippy, who died in 1979, and the daughter of Mr. Lon Hanford and Mrs. Lora Mebane Hanford, both deceased. She was retired from Koury Hosiery.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Tyra Rice of Clemmons and Ms. Lane Williamson of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Gary LaDale Rippy of Burlington and Mr. Terry Lee Rippy of Roxboro; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Hawkins and Mrs. Tillie Layne, both of Burlington; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Michael Shannon, chaplain for Hospice of Alamance-Caswell. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Lula H. Russell
ELON COLLEGE - Mrs. Lula Chapman Harris Russell, 68, of 10 Willow Oak, died at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at her home.
A native of Salem, Va., she was the wife of Mr. B. Carson Russell, who survives, and the late Judge W.S. “Sandy” Harris. She was the daughter of Mr. William Frank Chapman Sr. and Mrs. Wilma Cross Chapman, both deceased. She was a retired elementary school music teacher and private piano teacher. She was a member of Graham Presbyterian Church, where she served on many boards, church pianist, Circle leader, Bible leader, Sunday school teacher, Bible school teacher, youth group leader, life member of the Women of the Church, choir member, deacon and elder, president of the women of the church in 1991-92. She was a long time member of the Leornian Book Club, Shallow Ford Squares and was its president for two years, a volunteer for the Suicide and Crisis Line for 10 years and did volunteer music for Central Piedmont and Hawfields Nursing homes.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Susan Harris Weatherstone of Africa; two sons, Mr. Charles Brevard Harris of Burlington and Mr. Frank Chapman Harris of Hickory; a brother, Mr. W. Frank Chapman Jr. of Salem, Va.; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Graham Presbyterian Church by Dr. William Weckerly and the Rev. Lou East. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Charles C. Atwater
CHAPEL HILL - Mr. Charles Clinton Atwater, 85, of White Cross Road, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at Sunbridge Nursing Home in Hillsborough.
A native of Orange County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Ola Mann Atwater. He was a retired dairy farmer. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kathryn A. Rivers of Chapel Hill; two sons, Mr. Don Atwater and Mr. Warren Atwater, both of Chapel Hill; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Williams of Chapel Hill and Mrs. Naomi Stone of Collingville, Va.; two brothers, Mr. Matthew Atwater of Chapel Hill and Mr. Herman Atwater of Burlington; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church by the Rev. Neil Awbrey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Antioch Baptist Church from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mrs. Zelma Crumpton
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Zelma McIntyre Crumpton, 91, of 4307 Friendship-Rock Creek Road, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at Alamance Heath Care Center after six weeks of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. W.O. Crumpton and the daughter of Mr. James Monroe McIntyre and Mrs. Fannie Wrenn McIntyre, both deceased. She was retired after 57 years with Burlington Industries and was a member of Berea Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Billy Mack Crumpton of the home; a sister, Mrs. Rachel M. Jones of Reidsville; a brother, Mr. Edsel McIntyre of Elon College; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Lucille Welch and Ms. Vernie Boone; and three brothers, Mr. Clarence McIntyre, Mr. Woodrow McIntyre and Mr. Ben McIntyre.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Berea Christian Church by the Rev. Bland Leebrick, pastor, and the Rev. Dave Gilbert, pastor of Bethlehem Christian Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Bethlehem Christian Church cemetery.

Mrs. Effie Washington
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Effie M. Murray Washington, 98, of 514-D Sellars St., died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
A native of Greenville County, S.C., she was the wife of the late Mr. George Washington, and the daughter of Mr. James “Jim” Murray and Mrs. Hannah Few Murray, both deceased. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church on Apple Street where she was the oldest member of the Gospel Choir and a member of the Missionary Society.
Survivors include a sister, Ms. Geneva Green of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church on Apple Street by Dr. R.W. Styles, pastor, and the Rev. Joe Murray. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will be at the church at 1 p.m. Sunday prior to the service. At other times, they will be at the home of Mrs. Juanita Davis, 203 Walker Court, Mebane.

Mrs. Jodie M. Thompson
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Jodie Murphy Thompson, 40, of 645 Gunn St., died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mr. Donnie Murphy and Mrs. Gladys Hayes Murphy, both deceased. She was employed with the Burlington Dialysis Center and attended Graham High School.
Survivors include three sons, Mr. Terrance D. Murphy, Mr. Tramaine L. Thompson and Mr. Tremelle T. Murphy, all of the home; seven sisters, Mrs. Gladys Core and Ms. Maxine Murphy, both of Saxapahaw, Ms. Maggie B. Murphy of Mebane, Mrs. Elaine Crisp of Haw River, Ms. Bonnie Murphy and Mrs. Donnie M. Tate, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Cora M. Norman of Green Level; two brothers, Mr. Weldon Murphy of Graham and Mr. Earl Gene Murphy of Denver.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer United Church of Christ by the Rev. Larry E. Covington, pastor, and the Rev. Herman Long, pastor of Miracle Temple Holiness Church. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Lois L. Cobb
MEBANE - Mrs. Lois Lewis Cobb, 71, of 2902 Lake Ridge Lane, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 28, 1999, at her home.
A native of Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the wife of Mr. Jesse Rogers Cobb, who died in 1982. She lived most of her life in Reidsville. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Jerry Cobb of Graham; a daughter, Ms. Dianne Cobb Smith of Mebane; two brothers, Mr. John W. Lewis of Danville, Va., and Mr. Lawrence Lewis of Reidsville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Reidlawn Cemetery.

GREENSBORO - Mr. William Reid Anderson of 2812 Alcott Road, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital after several years of failing health.
Survivors include his mother, Ms. Myrtle Anderson of the home; and two sisters, Ms. Helen Atchison of Greensboro and Ms. Mary Jane Jones of Burlington.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Guilford Memorial Park by the Rev. Gary Kling.
