Mrs. Annie M. Hogan
HILLSBOROUGH — Mrs. Annie Mitchell Hogan, 100, of Hillsborough, died Friday evening, Dec. 18, 1998, at her home.
A native of Stokes County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Paul Hogan and the daughter of Mr. Albert Sidney Mitchell and Mrs. Carrie Moorefield Mitchell, both deceased.
Survivors include four daughters, Ms. Katherine Van Vynckt of Mooresville, Ms. Carrie Irene Head and Ms. Nancy Baity, both of Hillsborough, Ms. Julia Hinsdale of Burlington; a son, Mr. Paul Hogan, Jr. of Haw River; two sisters, Ms. Marguerite Watkins of Durham, and Ms. Juanita Pfuetze of Wilmington; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Mary Pickett, and two brothers, Mr. Leonard Mitchell and Mrs. William Mitchell.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Hillsborough by the Rev. Jeff Porter. Burial was in Hillsborough Town Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of Ms. Nancy Baity, 307 Gwen Road, Hillsborough.

Mr. William Dennis, Jr.
BURLINGTON — Mr. William E. Dennis, Jr., 62, of 717 S. Sellars Mill Road, died at 6:12 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at his home after several years of failing health.
A native of Lynchburg, S.C., he was the husband of Mrs. Carolyn F. Dennis, who survives, and the late Mrs. Janice Rae Dennis. He was the son of Mr. William E. Dennis, Sr. and Mrs. Mildred McNeese Crowder, both deceased. He was the retired owner and operator of Bill Dennis Custom Painting. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division and was stationed at Fort Bragg. He was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors, other than his wife of the home, include a step-son, Mr. Joel Cardwell of Elon College; three sisters, Mrs. Jeanine Faulkner, Mrs. Sharon Amos and Mrs. Cindy Bruner, all of Graham; a brother, Mr. Michael Crowder of Burlington; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. William Jeffrey Dennis; and a sister, Ms. Brenda Couturier.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Wesleyan Church of Burlington, by the Rev. Ronnie Jones. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington, from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times, at the home.

Mr. Ralph N. Roney, Sr.
BURLINGTON — Mr. Ralph Nathaniel Roney, Sr., 85, of 1653 N.C. 62, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after three years of failing health, four weeks critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband for 61 years to Mrs. Thelma Terrell Roney, who survives, and the son of Mr. Clyde Ruffin Roney and Mrs. Bennie Boone Roney, both deceased. He retired from Barnwell Brothers and Associated Transport after 34 years of service as a truck driver. He was a member of Teamsters Local 391. He was a charter member of Glencoe Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class.
Survivors, other than his wife of the home, include three daughters, Mrs. Dean (Bennie) Hall of Burlington, Mrs. Roy (Vickie) Shepherd of Whitsett, and Mrs. Randy (Cheryl) Massey of Burlington; a son, Mr. Ralph Nathaniel Roney, Jr. of Haymarket, Va., and Mr. Clyde "Buck" Roney of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Pickard of Burlington; seven half sisters, Mrs. Virginia Kernodle, Mrs. Betty Lou Cheek, Mrs. Delores Boone, Mrs. Shelby Aldridge, Mrs. Becky Jarvis, Mrs. Doris Perry and Mrs. Nancy Thomas, all of Burlington; a half brother, Mr. Herbert F. Roney of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Alene Christopher and Mrs. Pauline Caudle; and three brothers, Mr. William Chelsey Roney, Mr. Paul Boone Roney and Mr. Curtis Ruffin Roney; and a half-brother, Mr. James "Duke" Roney.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Glencoe Baptist Church by the Rev. Darrell Massey, pastor, the Rev. Felton Massey and the Rev. Larry Janey. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Entombment will be in the Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times, at the home.

Mrs. Elvera F. Gregson
LILLINGTON — Mrs. Elvera F. Gregson, 92, of 213 Community Road, died Monday morning, Dec. 21, 1998, in Broadway.
She was the wife of the late Mr. H. Clarence Gregson and the late Mr. John T. Fuquay.
Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Doris F. Wicker of Sanford and Ms. Thelma F. Parrish of Elizabethtown and formerly of Alamance County; a step-son, Mr. Royce Gregson of Sanford; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at O’Quinn-Peebles Chapel in Lillington by the Rev. Dan Jones. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church cemetery in Mamer.
The family will be a O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times, at the home of Mr. Richard Wicker, 6053 Old U.S. 421, Lillington.
Memorials may be made to Woodside United Methodist Church, P.O. Drawer 545, Mamers, N.C. 27552; or to Antioch Baptist Church, P.O. Box 525, Mamers, N.C. 27552.

Mrs. Barbara McCullough
SHALLOTTE — Mrs. Barbara Gail Jordan McCullough, of Shallotte, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at her home.
A lifelong resident of Burlington, she was the wife of Mr. James E. McCullough, who survives, and the son of Mr. Robert Forrest Jordan and Mrs. Ollie Foster Jordan, both deceased.
Survivors, other than her husband of the home, include a daughter, Ms. Dawn Edwards Curtis of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Mark Donald Edwards of Germantown and Mr. Robert Jeffrey Edwards of Winthrop, Minn.; a sister, Ms. Linda Fazzino of Burlington; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Donald (Judith) McIntyre.
A private memorial service was conducted Friday afternoon at Ocean Isle.
Cape Fear Crematory in Fayetteville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lynn A. Coffey
HICKORY — Mr. Lynn Archie Coffey, 85, a resident of Pellcare Nursing Home, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at his home after a period of failing health.
Born July 6, 1913, in Roanoke, Va., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Hazel Badgett Coffey and the son of Mr. C.C. Coffey and Mrs. Myrtle Martin Coffey, both deceased. He was a retired architectural and structural engineer. He was a member of Burlington Assembly of God.
Survivors include three sisters, Ms. Edith Hobson of East Bend, Ms. Janice Holdaway of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Ms. Edwina McKenney of Lake City, Iowa; and two brothers, Dr. Kyle Coffey of Issaquah, Wash., and Dr. Lewis Coffey of Rocky Mount, Va.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at Burlington Assembly of God by the Rev. Howard Thompson. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, Va.
Memorials may be made to Pellcare Nursing Home, 1125 10th St. Blvd NW, Hickory, N.C. 28601; or to Burlington Assembly of God.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ila Sledge
HIGH POINT — Mrs. Ila Sledge, 93, of Sunrise Triad Nursing Center, died at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at the center after a long illness. She was a former resident of 2220 Combs St., Burlington.
A native of Lexington, she was the wife of the late Mr. O.D. Sledge and the daughter of Mr. George H. Leonard and Mrs. Emma Waitman Leonard, both deceased. She was retired from Kayser-Roth Hosiery and was a member of the 39 and Holding Club and the Woodmen of the World. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, Circle No. 3.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. W.K. (Ruth) Crabtree of Burlington, Mrs. Jimmie (Zane) Robertson of Elon College, and Mrs. Nira Heyer of Mount Gilead; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Tommy E. Sledge; four sisters, Mrs. John (Roxie) Sink, Mrs. Etta Leonard, Mrs. Katie Thrantham and Mrs. Jessie Black; and five brothers, Mr. Grady Leonard, Mr. Herman Leonard, Mr. Harvey Leonard, Mr. Paul Leonard and Mr. Shelly Leonard.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington, by the Rev. Jim Hobbs, pastor of Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington, from 6 to 8:30 this evening, and at other times, at the home of Mrs. Ruth Crabtree, 2116 Whitsett St., Burlington.
Memorials may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 2331 La Vista Drive, Burlington, N.C. 27215; or to a charity of choice.

Mrs. Millie P. Jeffries
GLEN RAVEN — Mrs. Millie Pat Jeffries, 96, of Alamance Health Care Center, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at the center after a long illness. She was a former resident of Glen Raven.
A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Bennie Jeffries and the daugher of Mr. Jimmie Jeffries and Mrs. Annie Jeffries Jeffries, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Martin’s Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Missionary Circle and choir and was a fund-raising chairperson.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Clyde (Nancy Jean) Whitmore of Norwalk, Conn., Mrs. Preston (Jessie M.) Graves of Mebane, Ms. Joann Jeffries of Elon College, and Mrs. Jon Van (Poinciana) Hall of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Jeffries of Burlington; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Ida Enoch, and a son, Mr. Edgar Jeffries.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Martin’s Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Henry Simmons, pastor; the Rev. Ronald Brooks, former pastor; the Rev. Coslow Holt, pastor of Green Level United Church of Christ; and the Rev. Terry Jones, pastor of Visitors Chapel United Church of Christ. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Sharpe Memorial Chapel from 7 to 8 this evening, and at other times, at the home of Mrs. Jessie Graves, 2264 S. Third St. Ext., Mebane.

Mr. C. W. Whitt, Jr.
BURLINGTON — Mr. C.W. Whitt, Jr., 72, of 3520 S. Church St., died at 8:40 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after three years of failing health.
A native of Surry County, he was the husband of Mrs. Eleanor J. Whitt, who survives, and the son of Mr. Charlie William Whitt, Sr. and Mrs. Minnie Marie Gravitt Whitt, both deceased. He was retired from Ed Alexander Fabrics and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Mark’s Reformed Church and the Men’s Bible Class.
Survivors, other than his wife of the home, include three daughters, Mrs. Deborah Whitt Sharpe and Mrs. Lisa Whitt Oakley, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Amy Whitt Weaver of Elon College; two sisters, Mrs. Ila Mae Hudson and Mrs. Ruby W. Longest, both of Burlington; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant son; two sisters, Mrs. Marguriette Gilmore and Mrs. Doris Norris; and a brother, Mr. Timmy R. Whitt.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mark’s Reformed Church by the Rev. Robert M. Disher, Jr., pastor, and the Rev. Ben Bishop, associate pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington, from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times, at the home.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s Reformed Church, 1230 St. Mark’s Church Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Mr. Floyd C. Paylor, Jr.
BURLINGTON — Mr. Floyd Cephas Paylor, Jr., of 1324 Elrado St., died at 3:35 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, after a critical illness of two weeks.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Jeune Graves Paylor, who survives, and the son of Mr. Floyd Cephas Paylor, Sr. and Mrs. Cora Browning Paylor, both deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Word War II and was honorably discharged in 1943. He was a member of Archie’s Grove United Church of Christ, where he was a member of the trustee board and the Male Chorus.
Survivors, other than his wife of the home, include six daughters, Mrs. Regina Spradley of Baltimore, Mrs. Remona P. Alston of Winston-Salem, Miss Rhonda Paylor of Burlington, Mrs. Carolyn Lyons of South Field, Mich., Mrs. Betty Jean Brown and Mrs. Brenda Coachman, both of Chapel Hill; seven sons, Mr. Remi Graves of Graham, Mr. Rezell Paylor of Reidsville, Mr. Larry Paylor of Henderson, Mr. Curtis Paylor of Green Level, Mr. John Wayne Paylor of Elon College, Mr. Floyd C. Paylor III of Burlington, and Mr. Connie Thompson of Phoenix; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy P. Haith and Mrs. Catherine C. Fuller, both of Burlington; two brothers, the Rev. John Paylor of Mebane, and Mr. C.B. Paylor of Elon College; 34 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Donnell Thompson.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Arches Grove United Church of Christ. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 6 to 7 Wednesday evening, and at other times, at the home.
