Mr. James H. Jeffreys
BURLINGTON — Mr. James H. "Joker" Jeffreys, 83, of 1508 Overbrook Road, died at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at his home after an illness of several months.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Bettie Boswell Jeffreys, who survives, and the son of Mr. John Heenan Jeffreys and Mrs. Mary Cates Jeffreys, both deceased. He was a retired self-employed sales representative and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Burlington Masonic Lodge No. 721 AF&AM and First Presbyterian Church of Burlington.
Survivors, other than his wife of the home, include two sons, Mr. James L. Jeffreys and Mr. Richard B. Jeffreys, both of Graham; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Leath and Mrs. Eula Wellons, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Peggy Teer of Graham; two brothers, Mr. Jack R. Jeffreys of Cocoa, Fla., and Mr. Joseph J. Jeffreys of Rockledge, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mr. Thomas Heenan Jeffreys, Mr. Jerry P. Jeffreys and Mr. William F. Jeffreys.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, by Dr. Charles Williams, pastor.
The family will be at the home.

Mrs. Edith Kirkpatrick
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Edith Kennedy Kirkpatrick, 88, of 3536 Alamance Road, died at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a critical illness of 10 days.
A native of Moore County, she was the wife of the late Mr. G.H. "Pete" Kirkpatrick and the daughter of Mr. William Robert Kennedy and Mrs. Lou Cratie Garner Kennedy, both deceased. She was a graduate of Elise Academy. She was a member of Alamance Lutheran Church, the Golden Rule Sunday School Class and the Golden Agers Senior Citizens.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Fonda Kirkpatrick Brittain of Hickory; two sons, Mr. G.H. Kirkpatrick, Jr. and Mr. Ronald G. Kirkpatrick, Sr., both of Burlington; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was proceeded in death by two brothers, Mr. Colon Kennedy and Mr. June Kennedy.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Alamance Lutheran Church following burial at Pine Hill Cemetery by the Rev. James D. Lockley, pastor of Alamance Lutheran Church.
The family will be at the parlor of Alamance Lutheran Church from 6 to 9 this evening, and at other times, at the home.

Mrs. Drucilla Williams
GRAHAM — Mrs. Drucilla Durham Williams, 76, of 2110 Cooper Road, died at 11:20 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after 14 years of failing health, one year critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Mack Edward Williams and the daughter of Mr. Coy Lee Durham and Mrs. Minnie Neil Durham, both deceased. She was retired from Dixie Yarns and Sellars Manufacturing. She was a member of Saxapahaw United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daugthter, Mrs. Pat W. Boley of the home; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Durham, and a brother, Mr. Lee Durham.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at McClure Funeral Chapel in Graham, by the Rev. Terry Knighten and the Rev. Doug Durham. Burial will be in Moore’s Chapel Cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham, from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times, at the home of the daughter.
Mrs. Pauline S. Walker
REIDSVILLE — Mrs. Pauline Alice Strickland Walker, 90, of Highgrove Long-Term Care Center, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at Annie Penn Hospital. She was a former resident of 4926 N.C. 87 North in Gibsonville.
A native of Bethany Community in Rockingham County, she was the wife of the late Mr. James Boyd Walker and the daughter of Mr. Peter Strickland and Mrs. Alice Farrar Strickland. She had lived in the Williamsburg Community of Rockingham County and in the Shiloh Community in Alamance County most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a step-son, Mr. Anderson Boyd Walker of Gibsonville; two brothers, Mr. Sam Strickland and Mr. Gilbert Strickland, both of Reidsville; three step-grandchildren and five great-step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Lee Boyles; and five brothers, Mr. Bill Strickland, Mr. Bert Strickland, Mr. Herman Strickland, Mr. Claude Strickland and Mr. Gordon Strickland.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Citty Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Guy V. Soule, Jr. Burial will be in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will be at Citty Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times, at the home of Mr. Anderson B. Walker, 4976 N.C. 87 North, Gibsonville, or the home of a niece, Ms. Ellen S. Roberts, 1024 N.C. 87, Reidsville.

REIDSVILLE — Due to inclement weather, the funeral for Ms. Pauline Alice Strickland Walker, 90, of Highgrove Longterm Care Center, who died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital, has been changed.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Shiloh United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
The family will see friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Citty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Jamon Clark Corbett
HILLSBOROUGH — Jamon Clark Corbett, infant son of Mr. Luther Aaron Corbett, Jr. and Ms. Terrie Clark, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He was born Nov. 27, 1998.
Survivors other than his parents include two brothers, Mr. SaiQuan Devontrae Clark and Aaron Shamel Corbett, both of the home; and grandparents, Mr. Billy Clark and Mrs. Pearl Clark, both of Hillsborough, and Ms. Alva Jean Corbett of New York.
The funeral will be conducted at noon today at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home Chapel.
Mrs. Doris L. Best
PITTSBORO — Mrs. Doris Lakin Best, 96, Pittsboro Christian Village, Pittsboro, died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, after a sudden illness.
A native of Deadwood, N.D., formerly of Rendall Street in Burlington, she was the wife of Dr. David Raymond Best, who survives. She was a homemaker and a member of Ireland Street Chapel.
Survivors, other than her husband of the home, include a daughter, Mrs. Beverly B. Hester of Hurdle Mills, a sister, Mrs. Neva L. Brod of Bristol, Va., and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred DeVere Lakin and Gertrude Atkinson Lakin.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home by Mr. Charles R. Andrews of Shannon Hills Bible Chapel, Greensboro. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Mr. Elmer L. Coble
HAW RIVER — Mr. Elmer Long Coble, 87, 905 Keck Road, died at 1:05 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998 at White Oak Manor.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Maggie Lewis Coble and Mrs. Bernice Cole Coble, who survives. He was retired from Kayser Roth Hosiery. He fought in World War II as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Other than his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Nellie Coble Crawford Boggs and Mrs. Sandra Cole Coffin, both of Haw River, and Mrs. Della Sue Cole Roberson of Burlington; a sister, Ms. Lucy Coble of Snow Camp; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Jackie Coble; two sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Miller and Mrs. Mary Jane Combs; and four brothers, Mr. Henry “Tag” Coble, Mr. John Coble, Mr. Lonnie Coble and Mr. Edgar “Dink” Coble.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham, by the Rev. Richard Poindexter, pastor of First Baptist Church of Haw River, and Rev. James Rosser, pastor of Haw River Christian Church. The burial will be in Mt. Heron United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham, from 6 to 8 p.m. today and at other times at the residence.

Mr. Vernon Lee Porter
GRAHAM — Mr. Vernon Lee Porter, 62, 5624 N.C. 87 South, Graham, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998 at home after one year of declining health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Janice Johnson Porter, who survives. Of the Baptist faith, he was the owner and operator of a local appliance business.
Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Linda) McKinney of Whitsett, and Mrs. Gary (Diane) Moore of Mebane, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Pearl Lindsey Porter and Mrs. Maedell Morton Porter.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David Jackson, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Graham. The burial will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home.
