Mrs. Frances Thompson Smith
MEBANE — Mrs. Frances Thompson Smith, 70, of 714 N. Carr St., Apt. B, died at 11:49 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, after several years of failing health, one month critical.
A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of Mr. Vernon H. Smith, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Ralph Thompson and Mrs. Fannie Mawyer Thompson, both deceased.
She was retired from American Dye and Finishing and was a Baptist.
Survivors, other than her husband of the home, include three daughters, Mrs. Sylvia S. Ward of Burlington, Mrs. Barbara J. Griffin of Phoenix and Mrs. Joyce S. Bowers of Mebane; three sons, Mr. Jimmy Howard Smith and Mr. Gary Allen Smith, both of Burlington, and Mr. Michael Vernon Smith of Snow Camp; a sister, Mrs. Katherine Bowes of Whitsett; two brothers, Mr. Winston Thompson of Burlington, and Mr. Butch Thompson of Miami; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Annie Cranford and two brothers, Mr. Roger Thompson and Mr. Howard Thompson.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernest Beck, pastor, the Rev. Mark Gammon and the Rev. John Skenes.
Burial will be in Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham, from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times, at the home of Mrs. Sylvia Ward, 2112 Wrenn St. Burlington.

Mr. Bernard D. Palazzi
CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. — Mr. Bernard D. Palazzi, 75, of Clarks Summit, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at the VNA Hospice Unit, Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pa. after a long illness with cancer.
Born Oct. 11, 1925, in Dunmore, Pa., he was the husband of Mrs. Vivian DeLucy Palazzi, who survives.
They were married on Nov. 23, 1950 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
He was the son of Mr. Augusto Palazzi and Mrs. Rose Uguccioni Palazzi, both deceased.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater with honors.
He was general manager of Palazzi Garden Center in Clarks Summit.
He was later employed with J.C. Penney in Scranton.
He was a member of Abington Memorial Post No. 7069, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Clarks Summit.
He was a member of the Church of St. Gregory in Clarks Green.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Vincent Palazzi of Gibsonville; three daughters, Ms. Vivian Kelly Waverly of Pennsylvania, Ms. Nancy Clark of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Ms. Lynne Palazzi of New York, N.Y.; two brothers, Mr. Thomas Silvano Dunmore and Mr. Louis Palazzi, both of Plano, Texas and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, from the Jennings-Calvey Funeral Home in Clarks Summit, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Roads, Clarks Green, PA, by celebrant Msgr. John H. Louis.
Burial will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pa.
The family will be at Jennings-Calvey Funeral Home, Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit, from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. Earl Lynch, Sr.
MEBANE — Mr. Earl “Rat” Lynch, Sr., 90, of 611 W. Lee St., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, after a short illness.
He was retired from Mebane Lumber Co.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Earl Lynch, Jr. of Mebane; and one sister, Mrs. Viola Chavis of Mebane.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Calvary Holiness Church by Bishop Bert Rucker and the Rev. Frenchee Wiggins. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery in Mebane.
The family will be at Miles Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane, from 2 to 8 this evening.
Mr. Sherwood H. Benson
GRAHAM — Mr. Sherwood Herman Benson, 76, of 206 Aloha Drive, died at 1:50 p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2001, at his home after 15 months of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Johnston County, he was the husband of Mrs. Pansy J. Benson, who survives, and the son of Mr. Herman Benson and Mrs. Lizzy Adams Benson, both deceased.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was retired from Western Electric as a technician.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors, other than his wife of the home, include a daughter, Mrs. Deborah B. Thayer of Moore, Okla.; two sons, Mr. Ronald Earl Benson of Knightdale and Mr. Richard Edward Benson of Graham; a step-daughter, Mrs. Joy C. Joyner of Graham; a step-son, Mr. James L. Clemmons of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. Janie B. Canady of Clayton; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Lynda B. Magrini; a son, Mr. Donald Sherwood Benson; a sister, Mrs. Louise Mills; and four brothers, Mr. Aubrey Benson, Mr. Hocutt Benson, Mr. Lee Benson and Mr. Horace Benson.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McClure Chapel in Graham, by the Rev. David Jackson, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church, and the Rev. Randy Majors.
Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

LIBERTY — Mr. Royzell Bailey, 79, of 2158 Ramseur-Julian Road, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at his home.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Sallie Belle Bailey, who survives.
He attended Richland Gospel Church.
Survivors, other than his wife of the home, include a daughter, Ms. Shirley Duncan of the home; two sons, Mr. Leroy Bailey and Mr. George Bailey, both of Liberty; two sisters, Ms. Ruby Smith and Ms. Louise Layton, both of Liberty; two brothers, Mr. J.W. Bailey and Mr. Jerry Davis Bailey, both of Liberty; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Richland Gospel Church by the Rev. Jeff Dodson and the Rev. Lonnie Murray.
Burial will be in Richland Cemetery.

INDIAN TRAIL — Ms. Marie Salmons Conklin, 36, of 5904 Crosswinds Court, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Union Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mr. James Vernon Salmons and Mrs. Betty Murray Salmons, both deceased.
She was a Baptist.
Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Cathy (Tommy) Mooneyham of Elon College, Mrs. Janet (Steve) Stressman of Fort Richardson, Alaska, Mrs. Susan (Darryl) Allen of Baltimore, Mrs. Angela (Tim) Hunter of Indian Trail and Mrs. Natalie (Tommy) Byrd of Burlington; and two brothers, Mr. Jimmy (Dianne) Salmons and Mr. James Vernon (Sarah) Salmons II, both of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. C. Max Allman, pastor of Peoples Memorial Christian Church.
