Mr. Willie McCann Sr.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Willie James McCann Sr., 90, of 327 Thompson St., died at 1:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at Alamance Health Care Center.

A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Alma Harris McCann, who died in 1995, and the son of Mr. William McCann and Mrs. Betty Nichols McCann, both deceased. He was retired from Railway Express and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Charlie A. (Helen) Wright of Burlington; five sons, Mr. James W. McCann of Yadkinville, Mr. Thomas F. McCann of Graham, Mr. Willie J. McCann Jr. of Burlington, Mr. Harris G. McCann of Centerville, Utah, and Mr. Gary W. McCann of Bloomington, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Foy Terry of Danville, Va.; 16 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

McClure Funeral Home in Burlington is in charge of arrangements which are incomplete.

Mr. Wayne Davis

BURLINGTON - Mr. Wayne Davis of 2008 S. Mebane St., Apt. 733-A, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at McGuire Medical Center in Richmond, Va.

A native of Douglas, Ga., he was the husband of Mrs. Wadelean Pace Davis, who survives, and the son of Mr. David Davis and Mrs. Carrie Wilder Davis, both deceased. He was an ROTC Instructor and was a member of Elon First Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Reginal Cedric Davis of Burlington; four brothers, Mr. David Davis Jr., Mr. Jessie A. Moore and Mr. Freddie Davis, all of Douglas, and Mr. William Davis of Seattle; seven sisters, Mrs. Queen Collins and Mrs. Carrie Bennett of Claremont, Fla., Mrs. Mabel Bass of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Lula Carson of West Palm Beach, Fla., Mrs. Sarah Young of Douglas, Mrs. Bessie Brown and Ms. Shirley McKissic, both of Decatur, Ga.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Elon First Baptist Church by the Rev. Clarence Wall, pastor. Burial will be in Douglas.

The family will be at the home.

Mrs. Caroline Blackwell

ELON COLLEGE - Mrs. Caroline Williamson Blackwell of 2834 Springfield Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

A native of Rockingham County, she was the daughter of Mr. Clinton Williamson and Mrs. Annie Herbin Williamson, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John's AME Church, a member of the missionary society, a mother of the church, a stewardess of the church and a class leader.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. Robert Lee Blackwell of Asheboro and Mr. Guy Lacy Blackwell of Elon College; two daughters, Mrs. Loney Blackwell McAdams of Burlington and Mrs. Eugenia B. Crisp of Mebane; one sister, Mrs. Mary Smith of Whitsett; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's AME Church by the Rev. George Cheek, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Sharpe Memorial Chapel from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Clarence E. Smith

REIDSVILLE - Mr. Clarence Ebenezer Smith, 92, of 2128 Grooms Road, formerly of Pagetown Road, Cherry Grove, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 1998, at his home.

A native of Davidson County, he was the husband of Mrs. Eri McKinney Smith who survives. He was retired from Copland Fabrics and was a retired farmer. He was a Baptist.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Clay (Peggy Smith) Manring of the home and Mrs. Mac (Marenda Smith) Wilson of Cherry Grove; a brother, Mr. Gale Smith of Lexington; a sister, Ms. Mamie Matkins of Yanceyville; 19 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will be at the home.

Wilkerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kathy S. Dix

GRAHAM - Mrs. Kathy Smith Dix, 48, of 525 Graham Drive, died at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. H. Dee Dix, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Royce Smith and Mrs. Kathleen Love Smith, both deceased. She was the co-owner of Highway 49 Auction & Thrift Shop and was a Baptist.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include a son, Mr. Michael 'Mike' S. Rudd of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Teresa 'Lisa' D. Kimrey of Burlington; a stepson, Mr. L. Dee Dix of Graham; three sisters, Mrs. Peggy Marley and Mrs. Virginia Poe, both of Graham, and Mrs. Vicky Jones of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Charles G. Smith of Garden Grove, Calif., and Mr. Bobby J. Smith of Graham; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Dallas Brown, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, and the Rev. Johnny Flood, Baptist minister. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home, 525 Graham Drive, Graham and at the home of the son, Mr. Mike Rudd, 257 S. Cobb Ave., Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Mrs. Elsie S. Aldridge

YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Elsie Pauline Simmons Aldridge, 78, of 1703 Alvis Boswell Road, died at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Duke Medical Center in Durham after a long illness.

A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of Mr. Charlie Rufus Aldridge, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. James Thomas Simmons and Mrs. Daisy Stainback Simmons, both deceased. She was a homemaker and was affiliated with the Caswell Ruritan Club and the Caswell homemakers. She attended Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include five daughters, Mrs. Katrine Hall, Mrs. Evonne Pruitt, Mrs. Polly Aldridge Lewis and Mrs. Merry Parrott, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Elaine Wrenn of Elon College; three sons, Mr. Eddison 'Eddie' Aldridge of Greensboro, Mr. Charles Kenneth Aldridge of Burlington, Mr. Danny M. Aldridge of Yanceyville; three sisters, Ms. Lucy Kimbro, Ms. Beatrice Faulkner and Mrs. Lula Ausley, all of Burlington; 21 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. George Wesley Aldridge; one infant sister; three infant brothers; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by Bishop Vernon Massengill and Elder Lindsey Page, both of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and Elder Wallis Smith, pastor of Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. R. Howard Bowes

GRAHAM - Mr. Robert Howard Bowes, 81, of 306 Aloha Drive, died at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center.

A native of Caswell County, he was the son of Mr. Richard 'Dick' Bowes and Mrs. Addie Barts Bowes, both deceased. He was retired after 29 years with Cone Mills. He was a member of the Burlington Moose Lodge 649, and a member of the Tarheel Legion 158. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Cynthia Dianne Albright of Graham and Mrs. Geri Chandler of Charlotte; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Ms. Nita Hicks, Ms. Fannie Barker, Ms. Mable Gammon and Ms. Myrtle Allen; three brothers, Mr. Willie Bowes, Mr. Hurley Bowes and Mr. Harper Bowes.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lester Haney. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Hildred G. Enoch

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - Mrs. Hildred Gant Enoch, 66, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, Md.

A native of Burlington, she was the wife of the late Mr. Otis C. Enoch Sr. She was a retired dietary cook and a life-long member of Union Chapel United Church of Christ in Burlington where she was a member of the Senior Usher Board.

Survivors include three daughters, Ms. Barbara E. Daye and Ms. Geraldine Kennedo of Upper Marlboro and Ms. Jacqueline Enoch of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Otis Enoch Jr. and Mr. Timothy A. Enoch, both of Burlington; one sister, Mrs. Blonde Ann Byrd of Burlington; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Union Chapel United Church of Christ. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.

Universal Mortuary Services of Washington, D.C., and Galloway Funeral Home in Eden are in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Reuben de-Vries

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - Mr. Reuben de-Vries, 72, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at his home.

Born Aug. 16, 1925, in Dusseldorf, Germany, he was the husband of Mrs. Margaret de-Vries, who survives, and the son of Mr. David de-Vries and Mrs. Mary Rosenberg de-Vries, both deceased. He was a member of the Private Pilots' Association and the U.S. Hang Gliding Association. He was an Israeli Army veteran, serving in during the Israel Independence Wars. He was employed for 23 years by IBM as an advisory engineer.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughter, Ms. Margaret Scism of New Paltz, N.Y. and Ms. Jennifer de-Vries of Burlington; a son, Mr. John de-Vries of New York City; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Ruth Ben-Hur.

The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home in Fishkill, N.Y. Cremation will follow.

The family will be at the funeral home 30 minutes before the service.

Mr. Manuel H. Martin

NEW YORK CITY - Mr. Manuel H. Martin of 1970 Amsterdam Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Presbyterian Medical Center.

Survivors include two sisters, Ms. Hazel Marley and Ms. Minnie Lloyd, both of Liberty; and a brother, Mr. Laymond Martin Sr. of Liberty.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephen AME Church with burial in the Amos Grove cemetery.

The family will be at the church 30 minutes before the service.

Lt. Col. Harold Lanier

GREENSBORO - Lt. Col. (ret.) Harold Lewis Lanier, 75, of 5 Leawood Court, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Starmount Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born April 11, 1922, in Bath, he was the husband of Mrs. Mildred Jeffries Lanier, who survives, and the son of Mr. Jesse John Lanier and Mrs. Candes Thorne Lanier. He received bachelor and master of science degrees at N.C. A&T State University. He was retired after 24 years in the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and the Korean War. He taught and was an administrator at N.C. A&T State University. He was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church (USA), the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the YMCA, the Urban Ministry, the First Offender's Program, the Retired Officer's Association and Kappa Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include three daughters, Mrs. Benjamin (Patricia L.) D. Murrell of Winston-Salem, Dr. Beverly L. Skinner of Millersville, Pa. and Ms. Jennifer Anne Lanier of Timberlake; two brothers, Mr. Daniel Lanier Sr. of New Haven, Conn. and Mr. James E. Lanier of Greensboro; a sister, Ms. Elsie Lanier of Whitsett; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at St. James Presbyterian Church (USA) by the Rev. Howard A. Chubbs and the Rev. George W. Brooks. Burial with military rites will be in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the church one hour before the service.
