Mrs. Zona M. Young
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Zona Caroline Moody Young, 84, of 323 Baldwin Road, formerly of 1460 White's Kennel Road, died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at White Oak Manor after four years of failing health, four weeks critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. James Montague Young, and the daughter of Mr. John Moody and Mrs. Lenora Pike Moody, both deceased. She was retired from May Draperies. She was a member of North Graham Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Thelma Moody Fowle of Asheboro.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Erma Moody Fogleman and Mrs. Sarah Lee Moody Murray; and two brothers, Mr. John W. Moody and Mr. Floyd Moody.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Allan Ritter, pastor of North Graham Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 8:30 this evening.
Mrs. Betty Bullard
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Betty Bullard, 76, of 2305 McKinney St., died at 10:55 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after one year of failing health.
A native of Pittsburgh, she was the wife of the late Mr. Crayden Ashley Bullard, and the daughter of Mr. Joseph Frank Kalina and Mrs. Stella Holden Kalina. She was the owner and operator of Eastlawn Day Nursery for 30 years. She was a former director of the N.C. Christian Youth Crusaders and was a founding member of Graham Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Robert 'Bob' Bullard and Mr. Don Bullard, both of Burlington; a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Betty) Chastain of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Ed Kalina of Bluefield, Va., and Mr. Don Kalina of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Stella Hendon of Anniston, Ala.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Graham Wesleyan Church by the Rev. Ken Culbertson, pastor of Christ Wesleyan Church in Greensboro and the Rev. J. Henry Cavenaugh, pastor of Graham Wesleyan Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening.
Mr. Charlie Whitesell
GIBSONVILLE - Mr. Charlie Sylvester Whitesell, 86, of 212 Wyrick St., died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at his home after a long illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Beatrice Floyd Whitesell, who survives, and the son of Mr. Henry C. Whitesell and Mrs. Laura Wall Whitesell, both deceased. He was superintendent of street and water works for the Town of Gibsonville for 30 years. He was a member of Gibsonville United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three daughters, Ms. Maxine Neese of Julian, Mrs. Carol Neece of Elon College and Mrs. Lois Fuller of Whitsett; two sons, Mr. Richard Whitesell of Salisbury and Mr. Frank Whitesell of Wilmington; a sister, Mrs. Mary Welborn of Haw River; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. James 'Buddy' Whitesell; two sisters, Ms. Myrtle May and Ms. Blonda Hall; and a brother, Mr. Samuel Whitesell.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert M. Smith Jr., pastor of Gibsonville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Gibsonville Town Cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Herbert Jeffries of 2517 McCray Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at his home.

Mrs. Elizabeth McKinney
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Elizabeth Warren McKinney, 83, of 3426 N.C. 62 North, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center, after several months of failing health, one month critical.
A Caswell County native, she was the wife of Mr. Edgar Wilson 'Ed' McKinney, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. William Warren and Mrs. Lillie Ferguson Warren, both deceased. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Union Ridge United Church of Christ, where she was a member of the Ella Fleming Sunday school class and the Laura Ward Women's Fellowship since 1945. She was a life member of the Women's Fellowship, taught Sunday school for several years, was former leader of the junior Pilgrim fellowship, a member of the Golden Agers group and was Mother of the Year in 1993.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Sandra Lee Munczenski of Gaithersburg, Md..; a son, Mr. Eddie Warren McKinney of Springfield, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Grace McCollum of Yanceyville; a brother, Mr. William 'Billy' Warren of Reidsville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Ridge United Church of Christ by the Rev. Phil Hardy. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Lillie A. Weeks
CLINTON - Mr. Lillie Allen 'L.A.' Weeks, 77, of 107 McArthur Lane, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, in Sampson Regional Medical Center.
Born in 1920, in Sampson County, he was the husband of Mrs. Kathleen West Weeks, who survives, and the son of Mr. Bascom K. Weeks and Mrs. Lillie Mae Daughtry Weeks, both deceased. He was a retired appliance serviceman with Taylor & Sanderson Appliances. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Clinton and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors other than his wife include two sons, Mr. Larry Allen Weeks of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Mr. David Brent Weeks of Clinton; a sister, Mrs. Helen W. Whitefield of Newton Grove; three brothers, Mr. Lacy F. Weeks of Raleigh, Mr. Clayton Weeks of Burlington and Mr. Mayon J. Weeks of Fayetteville; and one grandchild.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Royal-Hall Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. David Kolb. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Fred H. Richmond
BURLINGTON - Mr. Fred H. Richmond, 79, of 1336-A Beaumont Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at the Hospice Home after a short illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Bertha Williams Richmond, and the son of Mr. Ernest Richmond and Mrs. Claudia Corbett Richmond, both deceased. He was a member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Maude Burney of Burlington and Mrs. Gladys Pulliam of Thomasville; and two brothers, Mr. James Richmond of Burlington and Mr. Harvey Richmond of New York City.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hargett & Bryant Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Larry E. Covington, pastor of Ebenezer United Church of Christ. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Mildred Hurst
GRAHAM - Mrs. Mildred Baumgarder Hurst, 89, of 2227 Swepsonville Road died at 8:25 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Twin Lakes Center after one week of failing health.
A native of Sylva, she was the wife of the late Mr. Herbert Henderson Hurst, and the daughter of Mr. Charles Byrd Baumgarder and Mrs. Sallie Moore Baumgarder, both deceased. She was a retired Army nurse and was a retired registered nurse with Alamance County Health Department. She was a member of the American Red Cross and Swepsonville Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Andrew Herbert Hurst of the home; a sister, Mrs. Magdalene Powers of Rochester, N.Y.; and a grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Annie Sloop; and two brothers, Mr. Harold Baumgarder and Mr. Richard Baumgarder.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Swepsonville Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Clement and the Rev. E. Paul West. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery in Mebane.

WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Clarence White, 65, of 636 Holly Ave., died at 9:40 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Britthaven of Forsyth Nursing Home after an illness of one year.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Flossie Fuller White, and the son of Mr. Roy White and Mrs. Hallie Harvey White, both deceased. He was a member of Burnette's Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Pamela W. Browning of Gibsonville and Miss Bernadette White of Greensboro.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Walter M. Richmond. Burial will be in Miles Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home one hour before the service, and at other times at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Pamela Browning, 210 Goodson Ave., Gibsonville.

ROUGEMONT - Ms. Velma Torain Cates, 77, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Born Feb. 2, 1920, she was the daughter of Mr. Bud Torain and Mrs. Nannie Sneed Torain, both deceased. She was retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of Glenn Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include eight daughters, Ms. Annie Tinnin of Cedar Grove, Ms. Louise Long of Hurdle Mills, Ms. Eva Pettiford of Durham, Ms. Lillie Jones of Winston-Salem, Ms. Hassie Arnold of Marietta, Ga., Ms. Joyce Davis and Ms. Hazel Torain, both of Rougemont, and Ms. Delores Cates of the home; four sons, Mr. Willie Cates of Cedar Grove, Mr. Ernest Cates of Salisbury, Md., Mr. Buddy Cates of Hillsborough and Mr. Bennie Cates of the home; two sisters, Ms. Magdaline Torain of Hillsborough and Ms. Hassie Hones of Durham; two brothers, Mr. Isaac Torain Sr. and Mr. Malcom Torain, both of Rougemont; 26 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Glenn Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. T.C. Nicholson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Ruth Johnson Graves of 251 North Ave. died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at the Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va.
Born Oct. 14, 1930, in Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Willie Howard Graves, and the daughter of Mr. George Johnson and Mrs. Martha Slade Johnson, both deceased. She was a member of Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church, where she was in the senior choir, missionary circle and served on the pastor's aid and kitchen committee.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Yancey Malloy Graves of Yanceyville; a daughter, Mrs. Dawn Rene Hughes of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Helen Boe of Providence.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Melvin Paylor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
