Mrs. Abby A. Wheeler
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Abby Adams Wheeler, 78, of 910 Harris St. died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, at her home after one year of failing health, three months critical.
A native of Wake County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Donald Gray Wheeler Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Lonnie Adams and Mrs. Annie Price Adams, both deceased. She was a retired textile worker and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Shirley Leonard of Graham, Mrs. Dorothy Poole of Burlington and Mrs. Patricia Willets of Gibsonville; a son, Mr. Donald G. Wheeler Jr. of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother, Mr. Almond West of Holly Springs; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Peggy Porterfield.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Oston McKenzie and the Rev. Raymond Webb. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the home.
Mr. Monroe Maynard
BURLINGTON - Mr. Monroe Cleveland Maynard, 77, of 425 Sixth St., died at 12:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at his home after an illness of several months.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Eva Ramsey Maynard, who survives, and the son of Mr. Clem Maynard Sr. and Mrs. Mary Bigelow Maynard, both deceased. He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of First Baptist Church on Apple Street.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Ms. Karen Maynard of Baltimore; a sister, Mrs. Mary Frances Williams of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. David L. Maynard Sr. and Mr. Clem Maynard Jr., both of Burlington; a stepson, Mr. Clayton Lee Ramsey of Graham; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mr. John 'Hook' Maynard, Mr. Ervin Maynard and Mr. Walter Maynard.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church on Apple Street by Dr. Richard W. Styles Sr. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
The family will be at the church from 10 to 11 Wednesday morning.

Mrs. Ethel E. Brock
ANDERSON, S.C. - Mrs. Ethel Elrod Brock, 90, of 313 B Street, died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at Ellenburg Nursing Center.
Born July 12, 1907, in Hartwell, Ga., she was the wife of the late Mr. John T. Brock, and the daughter of Mr. E. Noah Elrod and Mrs. Rosa Lee Temple Elrod, both deceased. She was a retired textile employee. She was a member of Garner Memorial Baptist Church in Anderson.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Daniel H. Brock of Burlington; four sisters, Ms. Lillie Belle Williams, Ms. Vera Dyar and Ms. Willie Bolt, all of Anderson, and Ms. Bobbie Cobb of Greenwood, S.C.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Clate Elrod and Mr. Stanley Elrod; and five sisters, Ms. Mary Herbin, Ms. Sue Snead, Ms. Ila Mae Spake, Ms. Bert Heaton and Ms. Grace Perry; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McDougald Funeral Home Inc. by the Rev. Tim Anderson and Dr. Jack Couch. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Inc. in Anderson.
The family will be at McDougald Funeral Home from 6 to 7:30 Tuesday evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Jackie R. Smith Sr.
McLEANSVILLE - Mr. Jackie Rayhart Smith Sr., 47, died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at Forsyth Hospital.
A native of Guilford County, he was married
for 28 years to Mrs. Sandy N. Smith, who survives, and was the son of Mr. Frank T. Smith Sr., who survives, and the late Mrs. Jettie E. Smith. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church and was a sound technician.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and father include a son, Mr. Jackie R. Smith Jr. of Browns Summit; two daughters, Ms. Tamisha S. Stanley and Ms. April S. York, both of Greensboro; five sisters, Ms. Almeta Apple, Ms. Jewel Hutchens, Ms. Louise Tippett, Ms. Barbara Chilton and Ms. Frances Worley; nine brothers, Mr. Frank T. Smith Jr., Mr. Wayne Smith, Mr. Charles Smith, Mr. Richard Smith, Mr. David Smith, Mr. Dale Smith, Mr. Ralph Smith, Mr. Glenn Smith and Mr. Darrell Smith; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Leland Smith.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Southside Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Anniemay Mudie Staples, 68, of 1763 Wheeler Bridge Road died at 4:35 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at her home.
A native of Medford, Mass., she was the wife of Mr. Raphnel 'Ray' Staples, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Ronald Mudie and Mrs. Mildred Magison Mudie, both deceased.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, Mr. Raphnel Staples Jr. of Matthews and Mr. Malcolm John Staples of Durham; a brother, Mr. Lloyd Mudie of Maine; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Faith Ellen Staples.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. R.E.L. Moser. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

MEBANE - Mr. James Addison Hatch, 44, of 7314 Lebanon Road, died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at his home.
Born Dec. 28, 1952, in Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Regina Lynch Hatch, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Nannie Bell Hatch Torres, who survives, and the late Mr. Ardis Jerome Hatch. He was self-employed with J.H. Trucking.
Survivors other than his wife include a daughter, Ms. Jeannie Lavon Hatch Inman of Snow Camp; four brothers, Mr. Dennis Jerome Hatch, Mr. Eddie Dean Hatch and Mr. Hubert Owen 'Butch' Hatch, all of Mebane, and Mr. Kenneth Allan Hatch of Morganton; a sister, Ms. Joyce Lavon Brady of Burlington; and a grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Kristie Starr Hatch.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Cemetery.

RALEIGH - Mr. Lemoyne M. Whitaker, 73, of 507 Cape Ave. died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997.
Born July 5, 1924, he was the husband of Mrs. Etta B. Whitaker, who survives, and the son of Mr. James Whitaker and Mrs. Sallie Whitaker, both deceased.
Survivors other than his wife of New York City include a son, Mr. Myron E. Whitaker of Holly Springs; three sisters, Ms. Doris Whitaker, Ms. Setha Whitaker and Ms. Armecie Payne, all of Raleigh; three brothers, Mr. Odom Whitaker of Burlington, Mr. Cato Whitaker of Raleigh and Mr. Kermit Whitaker of Garner; two grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and four great-step grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Macedonia United Church of Christ in Raleigh. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Pauline Justice Mangrum, 81, of 507 Everett St., Apt. 212-A, died at 9:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after a critical illness of three days.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Dewey Freeman Mangrum and the daughter of Mr. Richard Justice and Mrs. Daisy Dean Shoe Justice, both deceased. She was a retired employee of West Webb Curb Market Grill and a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church and the Victory Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Jean Mangrum Agnew of Raleigh and Mrs. Gearldine Mangrum Steele of Graham; one sister, Mrs. Hazel Higgins of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Glenn Justice and Mr. Willard Justice, both of Burlington; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Janet Lee Cook.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Glen Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Stephenson, associate pastor, and the Rev. Mike Workman, pastor of Holly Springs Baptist Church of Mt. Airy. GREENSBORO - Mrs. Effie Miles Kirk, 93, a resident of Masonic and Eastern Star Home, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997.
A native of Mebane, she was the wife of the late Mr. Klyde G. Kirk and the daughter of Mr. Mike B. Miles and Mrs. Sallie Fitch Miles, both deceased. She moved to Durham in 1925 and was employed by Ashlin, Thomas, Knight and King CPAs for many years. She was a member of the Southgate Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in Durham for many years and was awarded a lifetime membership.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Betsy M. Swain; and several neices and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Oakwood cemetery in Mebane by the Rev. Al Trotter. A memorial service will be held later at the Masonic and Eastern Star Home.

MEBANE - Mrs. Annie Mae Scott York, 73, of 7719 Lebanon Church Road died at 9:25 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after an illness of four days.
Born June 1, 1924, in Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William 'Bill' Woodrow York and the daughter of Mr. Tate Scott and Mrs. Swannie Spivey Scott, both deceased. She was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robin Hall of Burlington and Ms. Katherine York of Mebane; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by the Rev. Tommy Evans. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
