Mr. Hobart C. Smith
CHARLOTTE - Mr. Hobart C. Smith, 73, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Dorothy Smith, who survives, and the son of the late Mr. Carl Smith and Mrs. Edith Dollar Smith. He was a graduate of Burlington Business College and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in England and Germany. He founded Hobart Smith Construction Company in 1960 and served as CEO until he retired. He was past president of the Home Builders Association and was a trustee on the Board of Directors at Gardner-Webb University for more than 30 years. He was a member of University Hills Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon and a member of the building committee. He was also active with the North Carolina Baptist Men.
Survivors other than his wife include three sons, Mr. Hobart C. Smith Jr., Mr. Tony Smith and Mr. Kevan Smith, all of Charlotte; two daughters, Ms. Ann S. Hodges of Charlotte and Mrs. Eduardo (Sophia) Steibel of Boiling Springs; three brothers, Mr. Neal Smith of Mebane, and Mr. C.F. Smith and Mr. Curtis Smith, both of Burlington; one sister, Ms. Lorane Childress of Mebane; and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the University Hills Baptist Church by the Rev. Philip M. Young and Dr. Craven Williams. A private burial will follow.

Mrs. Kerry L. Jarman
GASTONIA - Mrs. Kerry Lamm Jarman, 52, of 2209 Kings Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, at her home.
A native of Bailey, she was the wife of Mr. Richard R. Jarman, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Donald M. Lamm and Mrs. Undine L. Lamm, who survive. She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a member of the Junior League of Gaston County, the North Carolina Association of CPAs, Rotary Club of Gastonia and the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder. She was formerly employed by the Gaston County Department of Social Services and as employment counselor for the Gaston County Employment Security Commission before establishing her own business, Kerry Jarman, CPA. She was a member of the Magnolia Garden Club and served as an officer in the club council. She was a past president of the Gaston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, former district captain of the March of Dimes and was listed in 'Personalities of the South' and 'Notable Americans.' She was a member of the William Gaston DAR and UDC, Bethel Herves Chapter.
Survivors other than her husband of the home and parents of Bailey include a son, Mr. Richard R. 'Rich' Jarman Jr. of the home; two brothers, Mr. W. Franklin Lamm of Houston and Mr. Phillip D. Lamm of Sumter, S.C.; a sister, Ms. Donna L. Poindexter of Burlington; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Gary Fulton and Dr. David Stoker.
The family will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Edna Clayton
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Edna Virginia Borror Landis Riggleman Clayton, 80, of 410 W. Fifth St., died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after one year of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Grant County, W.Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. William Wright Clayton and the daughter of Mr. James Harrison Borror and Mrs. Ada Belle Judy Borror, both deceased. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church of Durham and attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church of Burlington.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Shirley Faulkner of Burlington, Mrs. Carol Horne of Pinehurst, Mrs. Ruby Dixon of Murphy, and Mrs. Millie Dixon of Waynesville; one son, Mr. Elmer William 'Bill' Landis of Bayamon, Puerto Rico; three brothers, Mr. Calvin C. Borror and Mr. Richard Borror, both of Upper Track, W.Va., and Mr. Ronald Lester Borror of Petersburg, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rich & Thompson Chapel by the Rev. Jim Hobbs of Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 5 to 7 tonight and at other times at the home.
Mr. Tommie L. Haizlip
ELON COLLEGE - Mr. Tommie L. Haizlip, 75, of 3525 Hub Mill Road died at 8:25 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after 10 years of failing health.
A native of Henry County, Va., he was the husband of Mrs. Annie Davis Haizlip, who survives, and the son of the late Ms. Bessie Barker Haizlip. He was retired from Lorillard in Greensboro and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a game chicken breeder and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include five sons, Mr. Leon Haizlip, Mr. Curtis Haizlip, Mr. Roger Haizlip and Mr. Chris Haizlip, all of Elon College, and Mr. Bobby Haizlip of Whitsett; two brothers, Mr. Amos Haizlip of Altamahaw and Mr. Leonard Haizlip Sr. of Kernersville; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Doug Haizlip; a brother, Mr. Stan Haizlip; and a sister, Ms. Bessie Tate.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Friendship Baptist Church by the Rev. Chris Haizlip, pastor, Dr. Dan Christopher, pastor of Altamahaw Baptist Church, and the Rev. Tommy Gregory, of Light of the World Ministries. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Bethlehem Christian Church cemetery.

Mr. J.B. Cobb
BURLINGTON - Mr. J.B. Cobb, 73, of 424 Smith St. died at 4:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a critical illness of one week.
A native of Guilford County, he was the son of Mr. Robert V. Cobb and Mrs. Esther Irene Goodman Cobb, both deceased. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a textile employee.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Jane Davis of Newton, Mrs. Gail Caprossi of Hickory and Mrs. Janice Filippo of Florida; two sons, Mr. Arnold Cobb of South Carolina and Mr. Ronnie Cobb of Hickory; a sister, Miss Irene Cobb of Burlington; a brother, Mr. James F. Cobb of Burlington; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. R.E.L. Moser, Methodist minister. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 1 to 2 Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs. Dora Carmichael
MEBANE - Mrs. Dora Elizabeth Webster Carmichael, 81, of 111 W. Graham St. died at 5:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, at Hillhaven Nursing Center of Chapel Hill after several years of failing health.
Born Dec. 12, 1915, in Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Lacy Willard Carmichael, and the daughter of Mr. Jasper Webster and Mrs. Betty Powell Webster, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Adar Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Mr. Gene Carmichael, Mr. Wilson Carmichael and Mr. J.E. Carmichael, all of Mebane, and Mr. Wesley Carmichael of Supply; three daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Lunsford of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Peggy Lunsford of Prospect Hill and Mrs. Robin Horner of Graham; three brothers, Mr. Arthur Webster of Haw River, Mr. Spencer Webster of Burlington and Mr. Howard Webster of Elon College; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Dacey of Massachusetts and Mrs. Vivian Fuller of Providence; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Claude Webster.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Adar Baptist Church by the Rev. Chad Hall, pastor. Burial will be in Union United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 8:30 Monday evening, and at other times at the home.
Mr. Noah Hughes
HARRISONBURG, Va. - Mr. Noah Hughes, 88, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at Life Care Center in New Market, Va.
A native of Burlington, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Phyllis Hughes, and the son of Mr. Peter M. Hughes and Mrs. Martha Ray Hughes, both deceased. He was a machinist at Burlington Mills. He moved to Virginia and was involved in poultry farming. He was a member of the Methodist Church in New Market.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Robert A. 'Bob' Hughes of Timberville, VA.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and relatives in the Burlington area.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Betty Konopka.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Manor Memorial United Method Church in New Market.

WASHINGTON, N.C. - Mrs. Nellie Mae Dodson Clark, 76, of 153 Waterford Place, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at her home.
Born Sept. 10, 1921, in Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Joseph David Clark Sr., who died in 1990. She was the daughter of Mr. John Fred Dodson and Mrs. Jessie Cates Dodson, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Glory Choir and Grace Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Ronald Clark of Atlantic Beach and Mr. Rick Clark of Washington, N.C.; four sisters, Mrs. Ruth D. Hinshaw, Mrs. Helen D. Carrow, Mrs. Frances Louise 'Breezie' D. Carter and Mrs. Hilda D. Fogleman, all of Burlington; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Freddie Clark and Mr. Joseph David Clark; and a sister, Ms. Margaret Dodson.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Hillside Funeral Service by Dr. Jimmy Moore. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.

Mrs. Pauline Mangrum
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Pauline Justice Mangrum, 81, of 507 Everett St. Apt. 212-A, died at 9:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center after a critical illness of three days.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Dewey Freeman Mangrum, and the daughter of Mr. Richard Justice and Mrs. Daisy Dean Shoe Justice, both deceased. She was a retired employee of West Webb Curb Market Grill. She was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Victory Sunday School class.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Jean Mangrum Agnew of Raleigh and Mrs. Geraldine Mangrum Steele of Graham; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Higgins of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Glen Justice and Mr. Willard Justice, both of Burlington; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Janet Lee Cook.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Glen Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Stephenson, associate pastor, and the Rev. Mike Workman, pastor of Holly Springs Baptist Church in Mount Airy. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mr. Wallace B. Cates
BURLINGTON - Mr. Wallace Benfield Cates, 77, of 1702 Albright Ave., died at 4:12 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, three days critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Jesse Newman Cates and Mrs. Harriet Benfield Cates, both deceased. He was retired from J.N. Cates and Sons Coal and Oil Co. and was a U.S. Marine veteran. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and of First Baptist Church of Burlington.
Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Brenda Gail Gardner of Murphy and Mrs. Connie Marie Hart of Gibsonville; two sons, Mr. Roger Benfield Cates of Greensboro and Mr. Donnell Edwin Cates of Lewisville; a brother, the Rev. J. Howard Cates of Fredericksburg, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Clyde Sydney Cates.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Burlington Chapel by Dr. Craig McMahan, pastor, and the Rev. J. Howard Cates. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Hayward Dennis Birchett Sr., 56, of 619 James St., died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Debra Westbrooks Birchett, who survives, and the son of Elder E.H. Birchett and Mrs. Blannie Maynard Birchett, both deceased. He was an electrician.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include four sons, Mr. Aaron Birchett of Burlington, Mr. Frank Birchett of Siler City, Mr. Dino Birchett and Mr. Bobby Birchett, both of Mebane; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Cook and Mrs. Linda Harrell, both of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Albert Birchett of Georgia and Mr. T.T. Birchett of Greensboro; and five grandchildren.
