Mrs. Nellie D. Clark
WASHINGTON, N.C. - Mrs. Nellie Mae Dodson Clark, 76, of 153 Waterford Place, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at her home.
Born Sept. 10, 1921, in Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Joseph David Clark Sr., who died in 1990. She was the daughter of Mr. John Fred Dodson and Mrs. Jessie Cates Dodson, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Glory Choir and Grace Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Roland Clark of Atlantic Beach and Mr. Rick Clark of Washington, N.C.; four sisters, Mrs. Ruth D. Hinshaw, Mrs. Helen D. Carrow, Mrs. Frances Louise 'Breezie' D. Carter and Mrs. Hilda D. Fogleman, all of Burlington; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Freddie Clark and Mr. Joseph David Clark; and a sister, Ms. Margaret Dodson.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Hillside Funeral Service by Dr. Jimmy Moore. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
The family will be at Hillside Funeral Service from 12:30 to 2 Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. Nonnie H. Smith
PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Nonnie Mae Hill Smith, 91, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at Scenic View in King.
Born June 2, 1906, in Surry County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Fred Raymond Smith, and the daughter of Mr. James Walter Hill and Mrs. Rachel Jessup Hill. She was a farmer and a homemaker. She was a member of Hill's Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include three sons, Mr. Billy Hill Smith and Mr. Fred Raymond Smith Jr., both of Pilot Mountain, and Mr. John Ray Smith of Burlington; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ms. Bessie H. Hunter, Ms. Stella H. Payne and Ms. Mallie H. Stone; and four brothers, Mr. John Hill, Mr. Rixie Hill, Mr. Posie Lee Hill and Mr. Raymond Hill.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cox-Needham Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Erica Durham and the Rev. Linda Blessing. Burial will be in Westfield Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will be at Cox-Needham Chapel from 6 to 8 Saturday evening, and at other times at the home of a son, Mr. Fred Raymond, Old Hollow Road, Pilot Mountain.

Mr. Robert Gammon Sr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. Robert W. 'Bob' Gammon Sr., 79, of 2485 Harrison Road, died at 9:33 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997, at Vencor Greensboro Hospital after a critical illness of five weeks.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Jean McFadyen Gammon, who survives, and the son of Mr. Robert Lee Gammon and Mrs. Georgia Conklin Gammon, both deceased. He was retired from the U.S. Army and from Rhodes Furniture Stores Inc. He was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Gammon Cooper of Winston-Salem; a son, Mr. Robert W. 'Bob' Gammon Jr. of Clemmons; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Keck and Mrs. Gladys Pryor, both of Burlington; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conduced at 4 p.m. Sunday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Kurt Johnson, pastor of Shiloh Presbyterian Church.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Chapel following the service, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Wallace B. Cates
BURLINGTON - Mr. Wallace Benfield Cates, 77, of 1702 Albright Ave., died at 4:12 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, three days critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Jesse Newman Cates and Mrs. Harriet Benfield Cates, both deceased. He was retired from J.N. Cates and Sons Oil Co. and was a U.S. Marine veteran. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and of First Baptist Church of Burlington.
Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Brenda Gail Gardner of Murphy and Mrs. Connie Marie Hart of Gibsonville; two sons, Mr. Roger Benfield Cates of Greensboro and Mr. Donnell Edwin Cates of Lewisville; a brother, the Rev. J. Howard Cates of Fredericksburg, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Clyde Sydney Cates.

ELON COLLEGE - Mr. Clay Melvin Murray, 55, of 7220 Busick Quarry Road died at 7:59 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997, at his home after 18 months of failing health.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nellie Lou Smith Murray, who survives, and the son of Mr. Doc Walter Marion Murray and Mrs. Ruby Alcon Murray, both deceased. He was a retired employee of Sonoco Products Co. and was a member of Apple's Chapel Christian Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Diamond Edwards of Hopedale and Ms. Kathy M. Murray of Elon College; a son, Mr. Melvin Eugene Murray of Swepsonville; two brothers, Mr. Clyde Murray of Browns Summit and Mr. Jerry Lee Murray of Graham; four sisters, Mrs. Betty Justice of Burlington, Mrs. Dot Howerton, Mrs. Louise Howerton and Mrs. Judy Wyrick, all of Gibsonville; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Apple's Chapel Christian Church by the Rev. C. Allen Myers, pastor, and the Rev. Lester Stanley, associate pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Gertrude Graves
MEBANE - Mrs. Gertrude Graves, 78, of 1055 Airport Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center after a long illness.
A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Jacob Graves, and the daughter of Mr. Samuel Floyd Graves and Mrs. Julia B. Yellock Graves, both deceased. She was a retired seamstress with Webco and was a member of St. James Baptist Church, where she was an usher.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Gunn of Cedar Grove; three sons, Mr. Ernest Graves of Greensboro, Mr. Melvin Graves of Heilberg, Germany and Mr. Keith Graves of Mebane; four sisters, Mrs. Carrie L. Smelley and Mrs. Lessie Fowler, both of Mebane, Mrs. Hassie Pulliam and Mrs. Gracie Enoch, both of Burlington; four brothers, Mr. Johnnie Graves and Mr. Walter Graves, both of Burlington, Mr. Robert Melvin Graves and Mr. Clyde Graves, both of Mebane; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Allen Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. James Brown, pastor, the Rev. Charlie Pulliam and the Rev. Haywood Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

WHITSETT - Mr. Ferry Augustus Clapp Sr. 83, of 1442 N.C. 61 South, died at 3:55 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a critical illness of six months.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Grace Hoffman Clapp, and the son of Mr. Floyd Everette Clapp Sr. and Mrs. Myrtle Smith Clapp, both deceased. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Guilford County Farm Bureau. He was a member of Brick Reformed United Church of Christ.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Brenda) Wade Jr. of Whitsett; four sons, Mr. F.A. Clapp Jr., Mr. Michael Clapp and Mr. Gerald Clapp, all of Whitsett, and Mr. Douglas Clapp of Liberty; six sisters, Mrs. Mabel Wagoner, Mrs. Lucy Wagoner, Mrs. Sue Clubb, Mrs. Clara Chriscoe and Mrs. Agnes Fogleman, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Annie Allen of Mebane; four brothers, Mr. Luke Clapp of Whitsett, Mr. Kestle Clapp of Elon College, Mr. Buddy Clapp and Mr. Floyd Clapp Jr., both of Burlington; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Paul J. Martin
PAGELAND, S.C. - Mr. Paul J. Martin, 69, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at his home.
He was the husband of Mrs. Margaret Hurst Martin, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Mary Taylor Martin, who survives, and the late Mr. Richard H. Martin. He was a veteran of World War II and was retired from Celanese Corp. in Charlotte.
Survivors other than his wife of Pageland and mother of Marshville include a son, Mr. Paul R. Martin of Clemson, S.C.; a daughter, Ms. Lela M. Love of Albemarle; a brother, Mr. R.A. Martin of Pageland; a sister, Ms. Louise M. Randall of Graham; and a grandchild.
A private graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

REDMOND, Wash. - Mr. Guy Kelly, 17, of 2018-218th Place died Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997, in an automobile accident.
Born April 8, 1980, he was the son of Mr. Joe Kelly and Mrs. Debbie Kelly, who survive. He was a former resident of 118 Avenue of Trees in Elon College for 31/2 years. He was a soccer and basketball player for the Elon recreation teams.
Survivors other than his parents include a brother, Mr. Kevin Kelly.

Mr. Wilfrid Burgess
GRAHAM - Mr. Wilfrid deLisle Burgess, 99, of 1030 Scenic Drive died at 8:41 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Presbyterian Home of Hawfields after two months of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Guernsey Channel Islands, England, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Brenda Bird Burgess, and the son of Mr. Arthur L. Burgess and Mrs. Selina Hubert Burgess, both deceased. He retired after 19 years as an estate manager of the Hammersmith Farm in Newport, R.I., which was the summer White House for President John F. Kennedy from 1961 to 1963 and the home of the mother of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. He was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Jamestown, R.I. He was the author of two poetry books, 'Victorian Verses' and 'Random Rhymes.' He was a member of the Newport Guernsey Cattle Association, a member of the Jamestown Historical Society and Save the Bay Foundation in Jamestown.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jimmy (Marilyn Burgess) Burns of the home; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Bruce Robert Burgess.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross in Middletown, R.I., by the Rev. Gordon Stenning.
A reception will be held in the Guild Hall following the memorial service. The family will be at the home of Mrs. Eleanor Dickinson of Jamestown from Dec. 12 to 14.
