EDEN - Ms. Nellie Gray Murphy Witt, 90, of 742 Davis St. died Tuesday evening, Nov. 25, 1997, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.
She was a member of Osborne Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Peggy Gossage of Graham; three sons, Mr. Homer Rodgers and Mr. Bobby Rodgers, both of Eden, and Mr. Mike Rodgers of Axton, Va.; a sister, Ms. Elaine Minter of Eden; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Osborne Baptist Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family will be at Fair Funeral Home in Eden from 7 to 9 Friday evening, and at other times at the home of a son, Mr. Bobby Rodgers, 224 Westerly Park Road, Eden.
Ms. Catherine Warren
CEDAR GROVE - Ms. Catherine Ruth Harrelson Warren, 84, of Governor Scott Road died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997.
Born March 8, 1913, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Mr. Jim Harrelson and Mrs. Lula Walker Harrelson, both deceased. She retired from Woodlawn Middle School in 1982. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Warren's Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Mildred Warren Fuller of the home; a foster son, Mr. James Harrelson of Green Level; a sister, Mrs. Hattie White of Hillsborough; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Zion AME Church by the Rev. James Brown and the Rev. Larnie Horton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home from 7 to 8 this evening. The body may be viewed beginning at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

WHITSETT - Mr. Ferry A. Clapp Sr., 83, of 1442 N.C. 61 South died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Flora L. Elkins
HILLSBOROUGH - Mrs. Flora Webster Latta Elkins, 80, of 106 Short St. died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997, at Brookshire Nursing Home in Hillsborough.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Joseph Elkins, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Winslow Webster and Mrs. Mary Lassiter Webster, both deceased. Before retirement, she operated Elkins Electrolysis Service in Raleigh for many years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsborough.
Survivors other than her husband include three sons, Mr. C. David Latta and Mr. Sam A. Latta, both of Hillsbourgh, and the Rev. Phillip Latta of Fairfax, S.C.; two daughters, Ms. Mary L. Sutherland of Sanford and Ms. Christine L. Marsh of Florala, Ala.; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Sykes of Hillsborough; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Hillsbourgh. Burial will be in Fairfield Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Mr. Paul Moore
BURLINGTON - Mr. Paul Moore of 519 Ross St. died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
A native of Person County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mattie Bigelow Moore, who survives, and the son of Mr. Stephen Moore and Mrs. Cornelia Lawson Moore, both deceased. He was a shipper with Glen Raven Mills and was a mason. He was a member of Burton Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Marie Moore Stanford of Philadelphia; two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Long of Cedar Grove and Mrs. Bertha Wheeler of Burlington; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mr. Edgar Moore, Mr. Silas Moore and Mr. Robert Moore.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Burton Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. M.W. Boswell, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y. - Mrs. Jo Ella Stamps Butner, 58, of 1 Newbrook Lane died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at her home.
Born Oct. 25, 1939, in Caswell County, she was the wife of Mr. Roy Butner, who survives, and the daughter of Mrs. Myrtle Hammack Stamps, who survives, and the late Mr. William Rufus Stamps.
Survivors other than her husband of the home and mother of Yanceyville include two sons, Mr. Harold Butner and Mr. Richard Butner of New York; a sister, Ms. Mary Anne S. Huskey of Greensboro; and two brothers, Mr. David Stamps of Sanford and Mr. Rufus Lee Stamps of Yanceyville.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Lyttleton Stamps.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church by the Rev. Gaylord Dix.
The family will be at Trinity Baptist Church on N.C. 150 from 7 to 8:30 Friday evening.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Doris Diekman Duncan, 78, of 706 Huffman Mill Road, Apt. 2-C died at 5:38 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Indianapolis, she was the wife of Mr. Robert T. Duncan, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Edward Diekman and Mrs. Frances Boehmer Diekman, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include four daughters, Mrs. Doris Ann Hummell of Indianapolis, Ms. Linda Duncan of Burlington, Mrs. Robin Nerl of Alabama and Mrs. Donna Storey of Richmond, Ind.; a son, Mr. Robert Edward Duncan of Montgomery, Ala., and a brother, Mr. Edward Diekman of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter Miss Kathi Duncan and two sisters, Mrs. Alma Nerl and Mrs. Annette Williams.

A native of Alamance County, she was formerly employed by Royal Home Fashions plant 3.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Janice Clay of the home; four brothers, Mr. James Cates of Burlington, Mr. Graham 'Billy Boy' Cates Jr. of Prospect Hill, Mr. Willie Cates of Goldsbooro and Mr. Lewis Cates of Durham; three sisters, Ms. Fannie Cates Graves of Burlington, Ms. Mary Woods of Hillsborough and Ms. Sylvia Cates Weeks of Durham; her stepmother, Ms. Cora Cates of Albermarle; a stepsister, Ms. Willie Mae Cates of Albermarle; and three grandchildren.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Napoleon Robert Matthews Jr., 40, of 1717 Durham St. Ext., Lot 5 died at 8:58 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Riverside County, Calif., he was the husband of Mrs. Dorothy Marie Currie Mathews, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Ora Madden Warren, who survives, and the late Mr. Napoleon R. Mathews Sr. He was an employee of Burlington Industries and was a U.S. Army veteran. He graduated from Long Beach City College with an associate degree in sociology and was a member of Clover Garden AME Church, where he sang in the Gospel Choir and served on the Trustee board.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Graham, include his stepfather, Mr. Kenneth Warren Sr. of Graham; three daughters, Ms. Renita Mathews of Oakland, Calif., Ms. Latoya Mathews and Ms. Elizabeth Mathews of Long Beach, Calif.; two sons, Mr. Napoleon Mathews of Long Beach and Mr. Napoleon Mathews of Seattle; a sister, Mrs. Remi Kitchens of Graham; two stepdaughters, Miss Tonya Currie and Miss Sonya Currie, both of Burlington; a stepbrother, Mr. Kenneth Warren Jr. of Graham; and a grandmother, Mrs. Emma Mae Clark of Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Alvin Anderson.

McLEANSVILLE - Mrs. Rosa Crenshaw Welker, 85, of 4922 McConnell Road died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
A native of Oconee, S.C., she was a seamstress for Dixie Bell. She was a member of McConnell Road Baptist Church.
Survivors include seven daughters, Ms. Barbara Barton of Kernersville, Ms. Margaret Sheppard of Florida, Ms. Mary Cox of Whitsett, Ms. Judy Reynolds of Greensboro, Ms. Betty Knebel of Charlotte, Ms. Susie Myers and Ms. Angela Taylor, both of Gibsonville; nine sons, Mr. Jim Welker and Mr. T.D. Welker, both of Wade, Mr. Bill Welker of McLeansville, Mr. Jerry Welker and Mr. John Welker, both of Liberty, Mr. Jack Welker of Georgia, Mr. Steven 'Pete' Welker of Wilson, Mr. Charles 'Ike' Welker of Greensboro and Mr. Richard Welker of Linden; 43 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

BURLINGTON - Mr. June James Laster Jr., 71, of 710 Maple Ave. died Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after two years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Billie Mullis Laster, who survives, and the son of Mrs. N.E. 'Bill' (Mary) Daniels, who survives, and the late Mr. June James Laster Sr. He was retired from Brick and Block Construction and operated Laster's Sharpening Services. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of Trinity Worship Center.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Burlington include five daughters, Mrs. Richard (Billie) Rudloff of Snow Camp, Ms. Tresa Morton of Chapel Hill, Mrs. Bruce (Mary) Burgess of Mebane, Ms. Susan Manuel of Burlington and Ms. Barbara L. Jones of Jacksonville, N.C.; three sons, Mr. Dana E. Laster of Burlington, Mr. N. Eric Laster of Charlotte and Mr. R. Steven 'Steve' Laster of Winston-Salem; a sister, Mrs. Colleen A. Baynes of Burlington; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Mr. N.E. 'Bill' Daniels and a sister, Mrs. Joyce Falvo.

ELON COLLEGE - Mrs. Jo Ann Lowe Kernodle, 63, of 3565 N.C. 87 North died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro after two years of failing health.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of Mr. James Wayne Kernodle, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Jason Roscoe Lowe and Mrs. Maude Brown Lowe, both deceased. She was a teacher's assistant at Altamahaw-Ossipee Elementary School. She was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher of the Ever Ready Sunday School Class, a member of the Women Fellowship of the Church. She was a member of the Shallowford Squares.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, Mr. Barry Kernodle of McLeansville and Mr. Bennie Kernodle of Burlington; six sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Hardy and Mrs. Geneva Clapp, both of Elon College, Mrs. Leo Wood of Burlington, Mrs. Audrey Barham of Browns Summit, Mrs. Lorine Grogan of Greensboro and Mrs. Becky Barber of Altamahaw; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Hobart Lowe.
