Mrs. Mary M. Parks
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mary Verna Murray Parks, 90, formerly of 2408 N. Church St., died at 2:17 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at Alamance Health Care after several years of failing health, five weeks critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Frank Monroe Parks and the daughter of Mr. Thomas C. Murray and Mrs. Cornelia Childrey Murray, both deceased. She was a retired nurse for Dr. J.C. Wilkins and Dr. Emmitt Lupton. She was a member of Haw River Christian Church.
Survivors include four sons, Mr. Richard M. Parks of Graham, Mr. Charles Gene Parks and Mr. Jimmy W. Parks, both of Burlington, and Mr. Frankie L. Parks of Franklin; one sister, Mrs. Ruth W. Wall of Carrboro; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Mr. Albert L. Murray, Mr. Jessie A. Murray, Mr. Wilkins T. Murray, Mr. Ernest H. Murray and Mr. Horrace Murray; and two sisters, Mrs. Nettie M. Emory and Mrs. Mildred M. Barker.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Haw River Christian Church by the Rev. James L. Rosser, pastor, and the Rev. Richard Myers, associate pastor. Burial will in Long's Chapel United Church of Christ cemetery.
The family will be at the home of a son, Mr. Richard M. Parks, 1239 Pyrtle Drive, Graham.

Mrs. Gladys S. Patton
INMAN, S.C. - Mrs. Gladys Spoon Patton, 90, of 199 Brookgreen Drive, formerly of Piedmont Way and Sellars Mill Road in Burlington, died at 1:55 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at the Hospice Unit of Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, S.C.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William Jennings Patton and the daughter of Mr. Merriett Claude Spoon and Mrs. Daisy Bertine Spoon, both deceased. A 1929 graduate of Elon College, she was a former teacher at E.M. Holt and Southern Alamance High School for 35 years. She was a member of Beverly Hills United Church of Christ and the Eastern Star and White Shrine.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. John Robert 'Bob' Patton of Inman and Mr. William Claude 'Bill' Patton of Greensboro; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Kenneth Register and Dr. Chris Burr, pastor of Beverly Hills United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at the home of Ms. Wanda Huffines, 120 Dogwood Drive, Burlington.
Mr. Clyde A. Rich
BURLINGTON - Mr. Clyde Alexander Rich of 1614-D Woodridge Apartments died at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at the Rehabilitation and Health Care Center of Alamance after a short illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Ruth Andrews Rich, and the son of Mr. Christian Alexander Rich and Mrs. Mollie Bet Isley Rich, both deceased. He was a former salesman of Raleigh Products and Insurance. He was a member of Mt. Herman United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Baxter (Vitus) Latta of Burlington; and a brother, Mr. Hobart Rich of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Gladys R. May and a brother, Mr. Aubrey Rich.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 1 to 2 Wednesday afternoon.

MEBANE - Mrs. Nora T. Richmond of 190 Gunn Poole Road died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Mr. Newton D. Baker
DURHAM - Mr. Newton Diehl Baker, 65, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at his home.
A native of Virginia, he was the son of Mr. Henry W. Baker and Mrs. Rachel Stanford Baker, both deceased. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a salesman. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Mr. Harrell Baker of Burlington and Mr. Sidney Baker of Durham; two sisters, Ms. Joanne Sgrosso of Atlanta and Ms. Hilda B. Tillman of Durham.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Maplewood cemetery by the Rev. David A. Thomas Sr.

GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Mary Lamm George, 71, of 400 Steele St., Apt. 42, died at 5:50 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro after five years of failing health and a critical illness of two weeks.
A Johnston County native, she was the wife of the late Mr. Charlie George and the daughter of Mr. Preston Lamm and Mrs. Nora Worrells Lamm, both deceased. She was a homemaker and attended West Burlington Church of God.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Mary Lou Whitesell of Gibsonville, Mrs. Linda Sue Faircloth of Mebane and Mrs. Louise Butler of Snow Camp; four sons, Mr. Billy Joe George of Haw River, Mr. Charles George of Austell, Ga., Mr. Robert George of Mebane and Mr. Clint George of Elon College; one brother, Mr. William Lamm of Gibsonville; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one step-granddaughter.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at West Burlington Church of God by the Rev. Olin Tatum, pastor of West Burlington Church of God. Burial will be in Gibsonville City Cemetery.

Mrs. Judy J. Oates
WINSTON-SALEM - Mrs. Judy J. Oates, 55, of 3377 Sally Kirk Road died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997.
A native of Burlington, she was the wife of Mr. Rudy Oates, who survives, and the daughter of Mrs. Mildred Lewis Johnson, who survives, and the late Mr. Lonnie Johnson. She was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Survivors other than her husband of Columbia, S.C., and mother of Burlington include three daughters, Mrs. Mark (Deborah) Sloan of Vacaville, Calif., Ms. Elizabeth Oates and Ms. Rebecca Oates, both of Columbia; a sister, Ms. Marlene Jenkins of Charlotte; and four brothers, Mr. Sherman Johnson of Angier, Mr. Reginald Johnson of Burlington, Mr. Donald Johnson of Golden, Colo., and Mr. Jonathan Johnson of Fayetteville.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Reynolda Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Alan Wright.
The family will be at the church following the service.

Mr. Beverly D. Hayes
ORLANDO, Fla. - Mr. Beverly 'Biff' DeShazo Hayes, 74, of 4937 Waterway Court, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at Arbors Rehabilitation and Sub-Acute Center in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
A native of Burlington, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Helen Corinne Wood Hayes, and the son of Mr. Frank Alfred Hayes and Mrs. Blanche DeShazo Hayes, both deceased. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was an area supervisor for Pan Amtrans Atlantic Cable Co. He was a member of the Mokanna Masonic Lodge No. 329 F&AM, past district deputy grand master, Bahia Shrine, created past Master's Unit and created Southeastern Past Master's Association. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Frank A. Hayes of Clifton, Ariz.; a daughter, Mrs. Helen B. McKibben of Hobbs, N.M.; a stepson, Mr. Woody L. Hayes of Carlsbad, N.M.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Tobie P. Smith of College Station, Texas; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Magnolia Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
The body will remain at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington until time it is taken to the cemetery.

LEASBURG - Mrs. Georgianna Swann Elliott, 90, of 205 Olive Hill Church Road died Friday evening, Oct. 24, 1997, at her home.
Survivors include five sons, Mr. George Henry Elliott and Mr. Reginald Elliott, both of Washington, D.C., Mr. Julian G. Elliott of Hurdle Mills, Mr. Franklin D. Elliott of Winston-Salem and Mr. Donnell Elliott of Mitchellville, Md.; one step-son, Mr. Harvey Elliott of Washington, D.C.; five daughters, Mrs. Isabella Crutchfield and Mrs. Martha Smith, both of Leasburg, Mrs. Frances Fuller and Mrs. Geraldine Flowers, both of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Ms. Ann Elliott of Philadelphia; one stepdaughter, Ms. Josephine Graves of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Maggie Thompson of Haw River, Mrs. Hattie Winstead of Green Level and Mrs. Betty Lou Paylor of Durham; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Chapel Baptist Church in Leasburg by the Rev. James Brown. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 Tuesday evening at Allen Chapel Baptist Church.

GRAHAM - Mrs. Thelma Kitsinger Parsons, 87, of the Brian Center in Yanceyville, formerly of Whitsett Street in Burlington, died Sunday morning, Oct. 26, 1997, after several years of declining health.
A South Boston, Va., native, she was the wife of the late Mr. Samuel Thomas Parsons and the daughter of Mr. Claude W. Kitsinger and Mrs. Bessie Mae Nance Kitsinger, both deceased. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Nall Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Peggy Spears of Graham, Mrs. Rebecca Adams of Warrenton, Va., Mrs. Kay Wilson of Haw River and Mrs. Carolyn Cook of Brown Summit; two sons, Mr. Tom Parsons and Mr. Bobby Parsons, both of Burlington; one brother, Mr. Joe Kitsinger of Burlington; four sisters, Mrs. Faye Watkins, Mrs. Helen Latta and Mrs. Aileen Mullis, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Ruby Coble of Graham; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Woodrow Kitsinger and Mr. Otto Claude Kitsinger.
