Mr. Richard Richards Sr.
GRAHAM - Mr. Richard Schroeder Richards Sr., 91, of 779 Woody Drive, died at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after nine years of failing health, two days critical.
A native of Scranton, Pa., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Stella Perkintine Richards, and the son of Mr. Richard Richards and Mrs. Elizabeth Davis Richards, both deceased. He was a retired boiler operator.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Richard S. 'Rick' Richards Jr. of Burlington; and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Graham Memorial Park by the Rev. Ben Farmer.
There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Barbara Winningham
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Barbara Ann Mangum Winningham, 54, of 1432 Monroe Holt Road, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, after eight years of failing heath, three weeks critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Richard Cole Winningham, who survives, and the daughter of Mrs. Pauline Jones Mangum, who survives, and the late Mr. James Horner Mangum. She was employed by Graham Housing and was Methodist.
Survivors other than her husband of the home and mother of Plano, Texas, include a son, Mr. Jason Christopher Avery of Burlington; and a sister, Mrs. Linda Turner of Plano.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by Dr. Wally Fonville. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.
The family will be at home.
Mr. Kenneth J. Katzung
BURLINGTON - Mr. Kenneth James Katzung, 87, of 2393 Deep Creek Church Road, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at his home after a critical illness of one week.
A native of Avon, Conn., he was the husband of Mrs. Jeanette P. Katzung, who survives, and the son of Mr. Charles Katzung and Mrs. M. Annie Price Katzung, both deceased. He was a Master Mason for more than 50 years in Village Lodge No. 29 in Collinsville, Conn. He was retired after 25 years with the Connecticut Department of Transportation, and was Episcopal.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include one son, Mr. James Allan Katzung of Zephyrhills, Fla.; one daughter, Mrs. Russell (Judith Eleanor) Smith of Burlington; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery, Avon, Conn. Masonic rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Masons of Village Lodge.

Mrs. Rosa B. Willett dies at 102
SILER CITY - Mrs. Rosa Brewer Willett, 102, of 205 Olympia St., died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Country Forest Manor.
A native of Chatham County, she was a seamstress and a homemaker. She was a member of Edward Hill Friends Meeting for 77 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Ms. Estelle W. Swaim of High Point, Mrs. Maye W. Cheek of the home and Ms. Faye W. Brooks of Siler City; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Edward Hill Friends Meeting by Dr. Linda Greene and the Rev. J.R. Bouldin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
Mr. Roy Madden
BURLINGTON - Mr. Roy Harold Madden, 76, of 413 Bryan St., died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at his home after several years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Marie Sykes Madden, who survives, and the son of Mr. Andrew Staley Madden and Mrs. Nannie Trollinger Madden, both deceased. He was a retired automobile dealer. He was a member of Union Ridge United Church of Christ, where he taught the Henry Fleming Sunday School Class for several years, a member of the Golden Age Class and the Hustlers Class, and was a former deacon.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Pam) Frisby of Marshall and Mrs. John (Karen) Novak of Pittsburgh; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Ingle and Mrs. Jim (Lucille) Denton, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Charles (Hilda) Averitte of Mebane; a brother, Mr. Andrew S. Madden Jr. of Mebane; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Craig Madden; and a brother, Mr. Ben Madden.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Ridge United Church of Christ by the Rev. Phil Hardy, pastor, and the Rev. John Settlemyre, former pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Burlington from 4 to 7 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Carl Saunders Sr.
GIBSONVILLE - Mr. Carl Howard Saunders Sr., 84, of 9987 Kerr Chapel Road, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Alamance Health Care.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Christine Hedrick Saunders, who survives, and the son of Mr. Loftin Jordan Saunders and Mrs. Susie Faucette Saunders, both deceased. He was a retired tobacco farmer and was Methodist.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Carl H. Saunders Jr. of Raleigh; a sister, Mrs. Joyce Stokes of Burlington; and a brother, Mr. Percy Saunders of Charleston, S.C.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Miss Eunice Delores Saunders.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery by Dr. Guy V. Soule Jr. pastor.
The family will be in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Mrs. Atlas H. Parsons
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Atlas Huckabee Parsons, 79, formerly of 323 Kemper Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 6, 1918, in Danville, she was the wife of Mr. Berkley W. Parsons, who died March 28, 1994, and the daughter of Mr. Atlas Huckabee and Mrs. Flora Smith Huckabee, both deceased. She was the owner and operator of Azalea Motel in Wilmington.
Survivors include nieces and nephews of Burlington.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Edward Johnson

Mrs. Joy A. Carter
LIBERTY - Mrs. Joy Andrew Carter, 92, of 9045-B Cocoa Road, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Clifford 'R.C.' Carter, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Charley Andrew and Mrs. Callie Andrew, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Doris Daniels of Liberty; a son, Mr. Bobby Carter of Liberty; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Hill Christian Church by the Rev. Howard Spray. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Joseph Rodney Jeffries, 51, of 803 Ray St., died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at his home.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Willie Frank Jeffries Sr. and Mrs. Sadie Bowes Jeffries, both deceased. He was a member of First Baptist Church on Apple Street.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Frederick Michaels of Burlington; a daughter, Ms. Angela Nicole Graves of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Johnny Linwood Jeffries and Mr. Donnell Rogers, both of Burlington; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Willie Frank Jeffries Jr.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church on Apple Street by Dr. R.W. Styles, pastor. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
The family will be at the church 30 minutes before the service, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Linwood Jeffries, 1052 Sharpe Road, Burlington.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Laura Louise Jeffries, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at the Hospice Home of Alamance.
Born Nov. 28, 1920, in Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. Elmer Jeffries, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Earnest Jeffries and Mrs. Lizzie Jeffries, both deceased. She was retired from Burlington Industries and was an active member of Martin Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors other than her husband include six daughters, Ms. Faye Taylor of Lincoln University, Pa., Ms. Cecila Kennedy of Lawrenceville, N.J., Ms. Alice Asbury of Atlanta, Ms. Linda Jeffries of Burlington, Ms. Ruth Fuller of Bradenton, Fla., and Ms. Dinah Jeffries of Hillsborough; a son, Mr. Ernest Jeffries of Burlington; three sisters, Ms. May Dawson of Huntsville, Ala., Ms. Frances McBee of Atlanta and Ms. Ada Breeze of Greensboro; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Elmer Jeffries.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Martin Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Albert Morrow. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
