Mr. Garry Duckworth
GRAHAM - Mr. Garry Lee Duckworth, 42, of 1023 E. Gilbreath St. died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at home.
An Alamance County native, he was the husband of Mrs. Rosemary Brown Duckworth, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Mildred Brewer Duckworth, who survives, and the late Mr. Willie Mark Duckworth. He was a custodian at Grove Park Baptist Church, where he was also a member.
Surviving are his wife of the home and mother of Oxford.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Steve Duckworth.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grove Park Baptist Church by Dr. Roy Taylor and the Rev. Charles McMillian. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mrs. Gladys S. Patton
INMAN, S.C. - Mrs. Gladys Spoon Patton, 90, of 199 Brookgreen Drive, formerly of Piedmont Way and Sellars Mill Road in Burlington, died at 1:55 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at the Hospice Unit of Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, S.C.
An Alamance County native, she was the wife of the late Mr. William Jennings Patton and the daughter of Mr. Merriett Claude Spoon and Mrs. Daisy Bertine Spoon, both deceased. A 1929 graduate of Elon College, she was a former teacher at E.M. Holt and Southern Alamance High School for 35 years. She was a member of Beverly Hills United Church of Christ and the Eastern Star and White Shrine.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. John Robert 'Bob' Patton of Inman and Mr. William Claude 'Bill' Patton of Greensboro; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Kenneth Register. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Lowe Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Ms. Wanda Huffines, 120 Dogwood Drive, Burlington.
Mrs. Hazel H. Hamlett
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Hazel Hundley Hamlett, 73, of 4256 N.C. 62 South died at 1:22 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A Rockingham County native, she was the wife of the late Mr. Garnett Lee Hamlett and the daughter of the Mr. Raymond Calup Hundley and Mrs. Cora Alice Martin Hundley, both deceased. She was a retired Hospice nursing aide, a volunteer with Hospice and the Mt. Zion Thrift Store and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ellen Mays of Burlington and Mrs. Claudia (Penny) Holderfield of Alamance; two sons, Mr. Raymond Hamlett of Ossipee and Mr. Walter Hamlett of Alamance; one step-daughter, Miss Angie Hamlett of Graham; two sisters, Mrs. Yvonne Davis of Graham and Mrs. Estelle Hamlett of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Mr. Grady Hundley of Graham and Mr. Wayne Hundley of Burlington; 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Wesley Hamlett and Mr. Roger Hamlett; one brother, Mr. William Hundley; and one sister, Mrs. Hester Black.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fellowship Baptist Church by the Rev. Ken Simpson, pastor. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

Mr. James M. Dixon
BURLINGTON - Mr. James M. 'Jim' Dixon, 79, of 1445 Graham-Hopedale Road died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at his home.
Born May 30, 1918, in Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nellie Rainey 'Polly' Dixon, who survives, and the son of Mr. V. Ben Dixon and Mrs. Bertie Griffin Dixon, both deceased. He was a retired general contractor and was a member of the Bula Lodge No. 409 AF&AM. He was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he served on the Organizational Church Committee, was a member of many other committees and was first chairman of the administrative board.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. George (Anna Gail) Workman of Mebane and Mrs. Harmon (Rainelle) Mishoe of Wilmington; a brother, Mr. Paul B. Dixon of Burlington; five sisters, Mrs. Mary D. Strickland of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Rosella D. Allred and Mrs. Pat D. Qualls, both of Burlington, Mrs. Anna Jean D. Kennedy of Florida and Mrs. Becky D. Councilman of Alamance; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. James M. Dixon Jr. and two sisters, Mrs. Violet D. Wilson and Mrs. Mildred D. Dixon.
The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carson Wiggins, pastor, and Dr. Harmon Smith, former pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 4 to 7 this evening, and at other times at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Anna Gail Workman, 2114 U.S. 70 West, Mebane.

Mrs. Helen M. Steele
GRAHAM - Mrs. Helen May Steele, 71, of 305 Washington St. a resident of White Oak Manor Nursing Home for three years, died at 2:40 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Wilbur Thornton Steele, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Goley Ervin May and Mrs. Hallie May, both deceased. She was a retired sales clerk and was a charter member of People's Memorial Christian Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Miss Cornelia A. Steele of the home and Mrs. Karen Steele Neely of Burlington; a son, Mr. Don Mitchell Steele of Graham; two brothers, Mr. Boyd May and Mr. Herman May, both of Alamance; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Raymond May and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Max Allman, pastor of People's Memorial Christian Church and the Rev. Benny Smith, pastor of Staley Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home after the service, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Judy J. Oates
WINSTON-SALEM - Mrs. Judy J. Oates, 55, of 3377 Sally Kirk Road died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997.
A native of Burlington, she was the wife of Mr. Rudy Oates, who survives, and the daughter of Mrs. Mildred Lewis Johnson, who survives, and the late Mr. Lonnie Johnson. She was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Survivors other than her husband of Columbia, S.C., and mother of Burlington include three daughters, Mrs. Mark (Deborah) Sloan of Vacaville, Calif., Ms. Elizabeth Oates and Ms. Rebecca Oates, both of Columbia; a sister, Ms. Marlene Jenkins of Charlotte; and four brothers, Mr. Sherman Johnson of Angier, Mr. Reginald Johnson of Burlington, Mr. Donald Johnson of Golden, Colo., and Mr. Jonathan Johnson of Fayetteville.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Reynolda Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Alan Wright.
The family will be at the church following the service.

Mrs. Sarah Moreland
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Sarah Lubore Moreland, 98, of 743 Chapel Hill Road, formerly of Washington, D.C., died at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham.
A native of Washington, D.C., she was the wife of the late Mr. James E. Moreland, and the daughter of Mr. Louis Lubore and Mrs. Eva Bricker Lubore, both deceased. She was a Yeoman Third Class in the U.S. Navy during World War I. She was formerly employed by the U.S. Government - Clerk Treasury Dept. She was a charter member of the Jacob Jones Post No. 2, American Legion, Washington, D.C.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Grace L. Schofer and Mrs. Clara L. Thomas, both of Florida; and a brother, Mr. Terry S. Lubore of Burlington.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Lincoln cemetery in Brentwood, Md.

Dr. Hobert Perdue Sr.
BURLINGTON - Dr. Hobert Lee Perdue Sr. of 2247 Saddle Club Road died at 10:10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health.
A native of Thomasville, he was the husband of Mrs. Linda Hardie Perdue, who survives, and the son of Mr. Ernest Grady Perdue and Mrs. Carrie Black Perdue, both deceased. He graduated from Thomasville High School, where he was state wrestling champion in 1937 and 1938, and graduated cum laude from Appalachian State College. He received a masters degree in education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the Medical College of Virginia. He was a retired dentist, practicing in the Alamance County area for 35 years. He was at lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy and graduated from the Mid-Shipman School at Columbia University. He served as captain of the USS Algroma during World War II. He was a member of the American Dental Association. He helped organize and coach the first wrestling team at Williams High School. He was a past member of the Burlington Lions Club and was former co-chairman of the United Fund. He was a member of the Gideons, the Elks Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three daughters, Mrs. Jodie Gee of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Miss Carrie Anne Perdue and Miss Laura Jane Perdue, both of the home; a son, Mr. Hobert Lee Perdue Jr. of Elon College; a sister, Mrs. Odessa Crews of Walkertown; two brothers, Mr. Carl Vernon Perdue of Asheboro and Mr. Richard Ernest Perdue of Ravenna, Texas; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Charles Willard Perdue and Mr. William Ray Perdue.

Mr. Beverly D. Hayes
ORLANDO, Fla. - Mr. Beverly 'Biff' DeShazo Hayes, 74, of 4937 Waterway Court, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at Arbors Rehabilitation and Sub-Acute Center in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
A native of Burlington, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Helen Corinne Wood Hayes, and the son of Mr. Frank Alfred Hayes and Mrs. Blanche DeShazo Hayes, both deceased. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was an area supervisor for Pan Amtrans Atlantic Cable Co. He was a member of the Mokanna Masonic Lodge No. 329 F&AM, past district deputy grand master, Bahia Shrine, created past Master's Unit and created Southeastern Past Master's Association. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Frank A. Hayes of Clifton, Ariz.; a daughter, Mrs. Helen B. McKibben of Hobbs, N.M.; a stepson, Mr. Woody L. Hayes of Carlsbad, N.M.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Tobie P. Smith of College Station, Texas; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted in Magnolia cemetery in Elon College at a later date.
There will be no visitation.

Mr. Vance H. Shoffner
BURLINGTON - Mr. Vance Harrison Shoffner, 73, of 3665 Clapp Mill Road died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a short illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Burton L. Shoffner and Mrs. Mary Bailiff Shoffner, both deceased. He worked for Walden Saw Mill Co. and was a member of Low's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Blanche Vance of Burlington; and a brother, Mr. Billy Joe Shoffner of the home.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ruth Isley and Mrs. Margaret Reitzel; and three brothers, Mr. Colon Shoffner, Mr. Lucian Shoffner and Mr. Burton Luther Shoffner Jr.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Low's Lutheran Church cemetery by the Rev. Alvin Horne, pastor of Friendship United Methodist Church.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, and at other times at the home.
