Mrs. Margaret Salter
REIDSVILLE - Mrs. Margaret Ransom Salter, 84, of 100 Wisteria Drive, died at 2:35 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro after five years of failing health, two weeks critical.
A native of Toledo, Ohio, she was the wife of the late Mr. Jesse Shephard Salter, and the daughter of Mr. Arthur Earl Ransom and Mrs. Cecilia Smitz Ransom, both deceased. She was retired from Pate Printing Co. She was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Women's Sunday school class and was active in Ladies Circles. She attended Thompsonville Baptist Church in Reidsville. She was a member of the Heart Track Program at the YMCA.
Survivors included two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Jerry) Warren of the home and Mrs. Robert (Carol) Broyles of Newport News, Va.; two sons, Mr. Jesse Carl Salter of Edge Water, N.J., and Mr. Ronald Franklin Salter of Trinity; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Raymond Needham. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary form 6 to 8 Sunday evening, and at other times at the home of a granddaughter, Ms. Michele Johnson, 4444 N.C. 87 North, Elon College., 1997
Dr. William Vaught Sr.
BURLINGTON - Dr. William Wayne Vaught Sr., 86, of 434 Shadowbrook Drive, died at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
Born Nov. 17, 1911, in Eldorado, Ill., he was the husband of Mrs. LaJune McIntire Vaught, who survives, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chelsea R. Vaught, both deceased. A 1934 graduate of Washington University School of Dentistry in St. Louis, he moved to Danville, Ill., where he practiced dental surgery for 35 years. In 1951, he was president of the Champaign-Danville District Dental Society. He was a member of the Elks Club and the Masonic Futher Light Lodge 130. He was active for several years in the local Boy Scout organization and served as chairman of a troop committee. In 1980, he moved to Burlington. He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Henry A. (Jenna) Johnson; a son, Dr. William W. Vaught Jr.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A private memorial service will be conducted following the visitation. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery in Elon College.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home from 1 to 3 Saturday afternoon.

Mrs. Beatrice Thompson
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Beatrice Ritchie Thompson, 85, of 1935 Tucker St., died at 1:26 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, two months critical.
A native of Cabarrus County, she was the wife of the late Mr. June O. Thompson, and the daughter of Mr. Luther M. Ritchie and Mrs. Ida Lolabelle Love Ritchie, both deceased. She was a retired employee of Kayser-Roth Hosiery and was a member of Beacon Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Roger (Kaye) Hudgins of Liberty; two sons, Mr. Luther E. 'Dinkie' Cox of Alabama and Mr. Jackie O. Thompson of New Bern; two brothers, Mr. Harry Ritchie and Mr. Roy Ritchie, both of Burlington; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Morris 'Moe' Cox; three sisters, Mrs. Pearlie Mae Brantley, Mrs. Marie Arrowood and Mrs. Helen Arrowood; and a brother, Mr. Odell Ritchie.
The funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Henry Sink, pastor of Sharon Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 2:30 to 3:30 Sunday afternoon, and at other times at the home.
Mrs. Lois H. Matkins
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Lois Evelyn Huffman Matkins, 86, a resident of Twin Lakes Retirement Center died at 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at home after a short illness.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Eugene Cosmo Matkins, and the daughter of Mr. Louis Andrew Huffman and Mrs. Elizabeth Whitt Huffman, both deceased. She was a manager of Motherhood Maternity and was a lifelong member of St. Mark's Reformed Church, where she was a member of the Adult Bible Class and Circle No. 4.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. William M. (June) Poole of Rockwell and Mrs. Charles Jeter (Ann) Wilkins of Greensboro; a son, Mr. Eugene Huffman Matkins of Tullahoma, Tenn.; a brother, Mr. Louis Gordon Huffman of Hickory; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Reformed Church by the Rev. Robert M. Disher Jr. pastor.
The family will be in the parlor of St. Mark's Reformed Church following the service.

Mr. Ludrick Cates
HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Ludrick Cates, 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, in Durham Regional Hospital.
Born May 8, 1923, he was the son of Mr. Adolphus Cates and Mrs. LeAnna Hester Cates, and the stepson of Ms. Bertha Cates, all deceased. He was educated in Orange County Schools. He was a farmer and worked for Garrett Sausage Corp. and in construction.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Dorothy Lean Harrington of Durham; a sister, Ms. Katrina Bradsher; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in Chavis-Parker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Larnie Horton. Burial will be in Mount Zion Old Church cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home 30 minutes before the service.
Mr. John E. Morton
ALTAMAHAW - Mr. John Everette Morton, 76, of 2355 Osceola Road, died at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at the Hospice Home in Burlington, after 11 years of failing health, three days critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mae Harrison Morton, who survives, and the son of Mr. J.E. 'Ebb' Morton and Mrs. Sally Price Morton, both deceased. He owned and operated John Morton Grocery for many years and retired as postmaster at Altamahaw after serving for more than 20 years. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radar operator on the USS Ericsson during World War II. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where he served in various offices including treasurer from June 1969 to January 1996. John Morton Day was observed at the church Jan. 28, 1997, and a mission recognition was awarded by the United Methodist Women (UMC) of Fairview UMC in his honor. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Altamahaw-Ossipee Volunteer Fire Department for approximately 25 years, serving as secretary and chairman.
He served as treasurer of the Parent Teacher Association at Altamahaw-Ossipee and Western Alamance high schools, and was a former member of the boosters club at both high schools.
He served as precinct chairman of Morton Township for the Democratic party.
He was a former member of the Altamahaw-Ossipee Civitan Cub, where he served in all offices. He served as president of the Alamance Civitan Council. During his term in office, Camp Green Leaves at Lake Cammack was presented, debt free, to the city of Burlington as a gift from all the Civitan clubs of Alamance County. He was a member of the Tabasco Lodge No. 271 AF&AM.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Gary Morton of the home; a brother, Mr. Russell V. Morton of Burlington; three sisters, Mrs. John W. (Hazel) Robertson Jr. of Burlington, Mrs. Desmont T. (Peggy) Wilson of Elon College and Mrs. Mack Dwight (Alyse) Simpson of Altamahaw.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Frank Morton and Mr. Vance Morton; and a sister, Mrs. Edith Morton Tunstall.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairview United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Dutton, pastor, and the Rev. Dave Gilbert, pastor of Bethlehem Christian Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Winnie Lee Cottle McGowan, 95, a resident of White Oak Manor, died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at her home.

Mr. H. Clancy Way
BURLINGTON - Mr. H. Clancy Way, 76, of 2112 Combs St., died at 4:40 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at Rehabilitation and Health Care Center of Alamance, after a long illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Pattie M. Way, who survives, and the late Mrs. Verna Lloyd Way. He was the son of Mr. Willard Lee Way and Mrs. Thelma Stinson Way, both deceased. He retired as office manger and former owner of Cammack Office Supply. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a former chairman of the church deacons, former Sunday school director and former member of the church choir.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. Harold Nicolas Way and Mr. Jan Brugh Way, both of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Ms. Hope Lynette Cox of Graham; a stepson, Mr. Darrell Duane Kirkman of Elon College; a sister, Mrs. Judy Kakavas of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Paul Way and Mr. Roger Way, both of Burlington; three grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Mildred Greeson and Ms. Marie Vervest.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Charles May. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

BURLINGTON - Esequiel Guevara Reyna, infant son of Isequiel Guevara Reyna and Amalia Guevara, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
He was born in Orange County.
Survivors include his parents of 400 Williamson Ave., Burlington.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Faye Allison Harrell, 58, of 702 S. Sellars Mill Road, died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at her home after several years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Aubrey McDonald Harrell,
who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Rudy Lee Allison and Mrs. Molly Mae Massey Allison, who both survive. She was a homemaker and a member of First Alliance Christian Church.

Mr. Eric D. Fogleman
GRAHAM - Mr. Eric Duane Fogleman, 20, of 6876 Bethel South Fork Road died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Larry Keith Fogleman and Mrs. Marilynn Stout Fogleman, who both survive. He was an installer for Energy Accent Products of Burlington.
Survivors other than his parents of the home include a brother, Mr. Christopher Fogleman of the home; maternal grandparents, Mr. John R. Stout and Mrs. Mary S. Stout of Snow Camp; and paternal grandparents, Mr. Billy D. Fogleman and Mrs. Myrle M. Fogleman of Liberty.
