Mrs. Mary T.D. Moody
DURHAM - Mrs. Mary Theo D. Moody, 90, of 13 Sparger Springs Lane, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at her home.
A native of Davidson County, she was wife of the late Mr. Robert Hurley Moody and the daughter of Mr. Matthew Will Davis and Mrs. Jane Taylor Davis, both deceased. She was retired after 30 years of service with Sellars Department Store in Burlington. After moving to Durham, she crocheted blankets for Project Linus. She was a member of Grey Stone Baptist Church and former member of Grace United Methodist Church of Burlington.
Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Rebecca M. Emory of Durham and Ms. Ruth Smith of Greensboro; two sisters, Ms. Nina Carrick of Lexington and Ms. Lillian Daniels of Denton; two brothers, Mr. J.T. Davis of Denton and Mr. Sam Davis of Lexington; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Rachael Moorefield.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Grey Stone Baptist Church by the Rev. Malbert Smith. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Carson Wiggins.
The family will be at Clements Funeral Home in Durham from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mr. John W. Chapin
GRAHAM - Mr. John Willard Chapin, 93, of 1816 Meadowview Drive, died at 1:45 p.m. Friday, March 6, 1998, at his home after an extended illness.
A native of Akron, Ohio, he was the husband of Mrs. Violet Debaun Chapin, who survives, and the son of Mr. Charles Ezra Chapin and Mrs. Mary Ann Edwards Chapin, both deceased. He was a retired industrial engineer with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. He attended Akron University and in the 1950s was chief inspector for the All-American Soap Box Derby. He was recognized as the man who started the youth bowling program in Akron and was a member of the Tri-County Bowling Hall of Fame. In Graham, he was the oldest playing member of the Alamance County Seniors Golf League at the end of his membership in 1992. In his 90s, he bowled in a senior league at Country Club Lanes. He helped in three 'Strike Out Family Abuse' campaigns. He was a life member of JAPPA Lodge No. 666 of the Masonic Order and received his 55-year pin in 1995. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Graham.
Survivors other than his wife of the home, include a son, Mr. Jack Leonard Chapin, of the home; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday at his home by Mr. Mark Jones.
The family will be at the home from 1 to 4 Thursday afternoon.

Mrs. Huldah C. Way
GRAHAM - Mrs. Huldah Coleman Way, 76, of 779 Woody Drive, died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 1998, at the Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center of Alamance after several years of failing health, six weeks critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Clay Pritchard Way and the daughter of Mr. James Coleman and Mrs. Annabelle Hinshaw Coleman, both deceased. She was a retired textile inspector and a member of Piedmont Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a brother, Mr. Robert Coleman of Salisbury, Md.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rich & Thompson Chapel by the Rev. Morton Kurtz, interim pastor of Piedmont Presbyterian Church, and the Rev.
Powell Sykes, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times at the home of a niece, Mrs. Margaret Mansfield, 1708 Brown Ave., Burlington.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Arthur Warren 'Art' Baker, 73, of 5017 Baker Bell Farm Road, died at 6:40 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 1998, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Mary E. Eakes
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Mary Lee Ellington Eakes, 75, of Briarcliff Road, died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at home.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. L. Garner Eakes and the daughter of the Rev. R.P. Ellington and Mrs. Belva Cheek Ellington, both deceased. She was a member of Myers Park Baptist Church, where she was a choir member.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Beth Martino of Charlotte; a son, Mr. David Eakes of Charlotte; two brothers, Mr. Floyd Ellington of Charlotte and Mr. R.P. Ellington Jr. of Burlington and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Mr. Hillis Ellington, Mr. Carroll Ellington and Mr. John Newby Ellington.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte.
The family will be at Harry & Bryant Funeral Home in Charlotte from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mr. Arthur W. Baker
BURLINGTON - Mr. Arthur Warren 'Art' Baker, 73, of 5017 Baker Bell Farm Road, died at 6:40 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 1998, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a short illness.
A native of Moselle, Mo., he was the husband of Mrs. Pauline Johnson Baker, who survives, and the son of Mr. Silas E. Baker and Mrs. Susan Scott Baker, both deceased. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, he retired after 23 years with the rank of electronics technician senior chief. He was retired after 21 years of service with AT&T. He was a member of The Fleet Reserve and was a volunteer with The Alamance County Board of Elections. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where he held several offices and was a member of United Methodist Men.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Jeffrey Baker of Swepsonville; a daughter, Ms. Deborah Baker Miller of New Bern; two brothers, Mr. Henry Baker of Alma, Mo., and Mr. Herbert Baker of Garden Grove, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Alice Moore of North Kansas City, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Silas Baker Jr.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Fairview United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Dutton, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Salisbury National Veterans' Cemetery.
The family will be at the home.

Mr. William Hobson
BURLINGTON - Mr. William 'Frank' Hobson, 63, of 2248 Troendly St., died Monday, March 9, 1998, at his home.
Born May 12, 1934, in Moore County, he was the husband of Mrs. Glenda Hobson, who survives, and the son of Mr. John Thomas Hobson and Mrs. Myrtle Beard Hobson, both deceased. He was retired from A-1 Rental Service in Greensboro.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Calvin (Luanne) Colyer and Mrs. Dale (Wanda) Taylor, both of Fayetteville; a son, Mr. William Frank Hobson of Fayetteville; two sisters, Ms. Hazel Lindsey of Orlando, Fla. and Ms. Patsy Baugher of Jonesboro, Ga.; four brothers, Mr. Johnny Hobson of Burlington, Mr. Don Hobson of Johnson City, Tenn., Mr. Oscar Hobson of Huntsville, Ala., and Mr. Roger Hobson of Fayetteville; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel by the Rev. David Cartner.

Mrs. Phoebe Self
KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Phoebe Self, 57, of Kernersville, died Wednesday morning, March 4, 1998, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem after a period of failing health.
A native of Johnston County, she was the wife of Mr. John Burton Self Jr., who survives, and the daughter of Mrs. Annie Johnson, who survives, and the late Mr. Worth Johnson. She was retired form AT&T in Greensboro and was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Kernersville.
Survivors other than her husband and mother of Four Oaks include a daughter, Ms. Stephanie Walton of Graham; a son, Mr. Ross Walton of Snow Camp; a stepson, Mr. Greg Self of Fellsmere, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Ms. Susan Self of Beaufort; two sisters, Ms. Wanda Long and Ms. Gloria Godwin, both of Raleigh; four grandchildren; and one step grandchild.
The funeral was conducted Friday at Minshew Funeral Home in Four Oaks. Burial was in Juniper Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Mildred Johnson
FRANKLINTON - Mrs. Mildred Broughton Johnson of 403 Cheatham St., died Wednesday morning, March 11, 1998.
A native of Wake County, she was the daughter of Mr. Joseph Broughton and Mrs. Edna Pipkin Broughton, both deceased. She was the former owner of the Corner Drug Store.
Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Susan Johnson Woodlief of Raleigh and Ms. Judy Johnson McArn of Franklinton; two sons, Mr. Michael Lewis Johnson of Franklinton and Mr. Robert Steven Johnson of Elon College; six sisters, Ms. Virginia Vaughn and Ms. Clyde Schuster, both of California, Ms. Dorothy Williford of Beaufort, Ms. Edna Lois Floyd of Michigan, Ms. Leola Drake of Garner and Ms. Mary Grace Shaw of Williamsburg, Va.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Franklinton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Averette. Burial will be in Montlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Jack L. Sigman
BURLINGTON - Mr. Jack L. Sigman, 73, of 927 Kimberly Road, died at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville after a short illness.
A native of Spencer, he was the husband of Mrs. Della Young Sigman, who survives, and the son of Mr. Howard L. Sigman and Mrs. Annie Meadows Sigman, both deceased. He was retired from AT&T and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was past president of the Burlington Civitan Club and Civitan of the Year in 1996, member of the Board of Directors of Twin Lakes Center and was a member of the Burlington Traffic Commission. He was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church, where he was a former member of the church council and teacher of the Men's Fellowship Class.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Susan Shelton of Williamston and Mrs. Ellen Greenson of Burlington; a son, Mr. Jim Sigman of Charlotte; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Macedonia Lutheran Church by the Rev. John C. Earp, pastor, and Dr. Clyde Christmas. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mrs. Mamie C. Norton
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mamie Cathrean Norton, 78, of 1604 Morningside Drive, Apt. F, died at 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
A native of Person County, she was the wife of the late Mr. David Odell Norton, and the daughter of Mr. James Dolph Wagoner and Mrs. Katie Ferrell Wagoner, both deceased. She was retired from Brown-Wooten Mills Inc., and was a Baptist.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Marie Norton Effler of Gray, Tenn.; two sons, Mr. Raymond Norton of Graham and Mr. Maynard C. Norton of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Jean Gray Stallings and Mrs. Joyce Tickle, both of Graham; a brother, Mr. Earl Wagoner of Greensboro, eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Felton Massey, interim pastor of Faith Bible Chapel, and the Rev. Wade Cox, of Nall Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
