Mrs. Dorothy W. Jones
MEBANE - Mrs. Dorothy Marion Watkins Jones, 72, of 3454 Jones Road, died at 3:44 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after two years of failing health, three days critical.
A native of Wake County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Robert Willard Jones Sr., and the daughter of Mr. William Ervin Watkins and Mrs. Lillie Mae Cox Watkins, both deceased. She retired after 45 years of service from Cone Mills, Granite Finishing Plant in Haw River. She was past president of American War Mothers and was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Patricia Jones Stanley of Lawrenceville, Ga., Miss Deanie Jones of Graham and Mrs. Lynn Jones Walters of Mebane; two sons, Mr. Robert W. 'Bobby' Jones Jr. and Mr. Dennis J. Jones, both of Mebane; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by the Rev. Skip Williams and the Rev. Jesse Staton. Burial will be in Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home after the service.

Mr. John J. Holt
MEBANE - Mr. John Julius Holt of 416 Tate Ave., died at 3 p.m. Monday, March 9, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a long illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Gus Holt and Mrs. Estelle Simmons Holt, both deceased. He was a retired orderly with Grassland Hospital in White Plains, N.Y.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Robert Wilson of White Plains; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Swan of Atlanta and Mrs. Marilyn Holt Snipes of Mebane; a brother, Mr. David Holt of Mebane; four sisters, Mrs. Mildred Thompson and Mrs. Deloise Walker, both of Burlington, Mrs. Hazel Scoggins of Graham and Mrs. Shirley Cousins of Mebane; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sharpe Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the Mebane Community Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home 30 minutes before the service.
Mrs. Bessie P. Rainey
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Bessie Burch Paschal Rainey, 86, of 2531 Ossipee Front St., Elon College, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Sanford Ball Jr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. Sanford Floyd Ball Jr., 65, of Burlington, died at 2:51 p.m. Monday, March 9, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham after several years of failing health, one month critical.
A native of Forsyth County, he was the son of Mr. Sanford Floyd Ball Sr., and Mrs. Mary Clara Caviness Ball, both deceased. He was a retired painter and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a Baptist.
There will be no service and no visitation.

Mrs. Bessie P. Rainey
ELON COLLEGE - Mrs. Bessie Paschal Rainey, 86, of 2531 Ossipee Front St., died at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Caswell County, she was the husband of the late Mr. Mack Nathaniel Rainey, and the daughter of Mr. Elisha P. Paschal and Mrs. Fannie Viola Tate Paschal, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Altamahaw Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Ben (Linda) Jones of Elon College; a son, Mr. Bobby Wayne Rainey of Rockingham; three brothers, Mr. Wilbert Paschal and Mr. Ernest Paschal, both of Reidsville, and Mr. Houston Paschal of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Nonie Moore of Burlington and Mrs. Anne Binus of Louisville, Ky.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Jesse Paschal and Mr. Eddison Paschal; and a sister, Mrs. Hattie Haney.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Altamahaw Baptist Church by Dr. Dan Christopher, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of the daughter, 2025 N. Crest Drive, Elon College.

Mr. Wayne E. Phillips
BENNETT - Mr. Wayne E. Phillips, 73, of 3586 Bennett-Siler City Road, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
A native of Chatham County, he was the husband of Mrs. Allena Grace Phillips, who survives. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II. He was a 1950 graduate of Elon College and received a master of education degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He was principal, teacher and coach at Bennett School and later retired as principal of Chatham Central High School. He was a long-time officer of the Randolph Telephone Board of Directors and was president of Bennett Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors. He was a member of the Chatam County Board of Education for eight years. He was a member of Bennett Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He also served as moderator of Sandy Creek Baptist Association.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Ms. Vivian Phillips of Bennett; a son, Mr. John Wayne Phillips of Siler City; a brother, Mr. Daniel Phillips of Bennett; and three sisters, Ms. Sue Routh and Ms. Lucy Pugh, both of Bennett, and Ms. Gretchen Simmons of Staley.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Bennett Baptist Church by the Rev. Timothy Strider, the Rev. Robert Bouldin and Dr. Curtis Barbery. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Jerry M. Hargis
SUPPLY - Mr. Jerry M. Hargis, 47, of Old Ferry Road, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Born July 24, 1950, in Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Mark T. Hargis and Mrs. Hazel Tate Hargis, who both survive. He was a crane operator for Atlantic Diving and Marine of Wilmington and was a former member of the Shallotte Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Survivors other than his parents of Mebane, include a son, Mr. Chris Hargis of Supply; two daughters, Ms. Michelle Hargis and Ms. Megan Hargis, both of Supply; three sisters, Ms. Carolyn Graham and Ms. Lisa Lynch, both of Burlington, and Ms. Kaye Armfield of Asheboro; and a grandchild.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service Chapel in Supply by the Rev. Billy Smith.
The family will be at the chapel following the service.

Mr. 'Rusty' Lovin Jr.
BOONE - Mr. L.G. 'Rusty' Lovin Jr., 70, of Boone, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.
Born Sept. 20, 1927, in Red Springs, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Marilyn Meeks Lovin, and the son of Mr. Leak Gibson Lovin and Mrs. Sadie Fulton Lovin, both deceased. He grew up in Walnut Cove. He was a graduate of Christ School in Arden and received a degree in textiles from N.C. State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired as vice president in marketing from Celanese Inc., in New York, and was a founding partner in the Stokes County Yarn Company in Greensboro. He was an Episcopalian.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Dave (Kelly) Schumacher of Burlington; a son, Mr. Fulton Lovin of Boone; a stepdaughter, Ms. Crystal Lynn Campbell of Greensboro; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church in Walnut Cove by the Rev. Ted Weatherly. Burial will be in Walnut Cove Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of Mr. Blaine Tuttle and Mrs. Phyllis Tuttle, Summit Street, Walnut Cove.

Mr. Joseph Statkevicus
ELON COLLEGE - Mr. Joseph D. Statkevicus, 85, died at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, March 12, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Great Neck, N.Y., he was the husband of Mrs. Irene Rupsky Statkevicus, who survives, and the son of Mr. John Statkevicus and Mrs. Adele Statkevicus, both deceased. He was retired from Lehigh Valley Railroad.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Gail Pauza of Hershey, Pa.; two sons, Mr. Phillip Statkevicus of Neshaniz Station, N.J., and Mr. Joseph R. Statkevicus of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Adele Smiros of Clearwater, Fla., and Mrs. Viola Hayes of New York; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. Terry Pescatore, O.F.M., Conv.
There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Marian M. Sims
YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Marian Lipscomb Mitchell Sims, 56, of 17 Riggs Road, Washington, D.C., formerly of Blanch, died Monday, March 9, 1998, in Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Born Feb. 27, 1942, in Blanch, she was the wife of Mr. Joseph Sims, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. John Lewis Lipscomb and Mrs. Annie D. Johnson Lipscomb, both deceased. She was a member of Hamer Baptist Church in Blanch and a member of New Bethel Church of God in Christ in Washington, D.C., where she was an usher and was a member of the Senior Choir. She attended Howard University and was employed at First Union Bank in Washington, D.C. where she was branch bank manager.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Ms. Phyllis Mitchell Booth of Graham; a brother, the Rev. Maurice Lipscomb of Yanceyville; a sister, Mrs. Barbara Lipscomb Shearin of Durham; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hamer Baptist Church by the Rev. Cephus Lea. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Fulton Funeral Home from 7 to 8 this evening and at other times at the home of her nephew, Mr. George Lipscomb, 3988 Slade Road, Blanch.
Mr. Robert Pennington Sr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. Robert E. 'Bob' Pennington Sr., 83, of 2822 S. Mebane St., died at 12:53 p.m. Friday, March 13, 1998, at his home, after a sudden illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Lee Whitley Pennington, who survives, and the son of Mr. Robert Daniel Pennington and Mrs. Mary Catherine 'Molly' Phillips Pennington, both deceased. He was the retired president of Pennington Oil Service. He was a life member of Burlington Masonic Lodge No. 721 AF&AM, where he was past master. He was a certified lecturer emeritus, member of the York Rite, Burlington Shrine Club, Amran Temple of Raleigh, honor member for life of the DeMolay Legion of Honor, and former member and past president of the Alamance Civitan Club. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Ann) Olson of Covington, Va., and Mrs. Jim (Kay) Ownby of Elgin, S.C.; two sons, Mr. Robert E. 'Bob' Pennington Jr. and Mr. William J. 'Bill' Pennington, both of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Pansy Hightower of Hawfields; three grandchildren; one step grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Robinelle Pennington and Mrs. Nadine P. Boring; and two brothers, Mr. Carlos Pennington and Mr. Gurney Pennington.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Alamance Memorial Park by Mr. Charles F. Bivins, master of Burlington Masonic Lodge No. 721 AF&AM, and the Rev. David Williams, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.
Burlington Masonic Lodge No. 721 AF&AM will meet for emergent communication at 9:30 a.m. Monday.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 5 to 7 Sunday afternoon, and at other times at the home.
