WILSON
Mrs. Betty Ruth Tompkins Wilson, age 69, of 5586 Fox Ridge Road, Ennice, died Wednesday morning, January 25, 2006, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, Va. She was the daughter of the late, Dock and Vada Greene Tompkins. She is survived by her husband, Paul J. Wilson; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald Junior Wilson of the home, and Ronnie and Nicole Wilson of Chesapeake, Va; two grandchildren, Emily and Jordan Wilson; and a brother and sister-in-law, Leo and Eula Mae Tompkins of Ennice. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning, January 28th at the Little Pine Church of the Brethren. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church Friday evening where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Wilson family.
ANDERS
Mr. Robert Gwyn Anders, age 87, of 551 Elk Creek Ridge Road, Sparta, died Tuesday, January 24, 2006, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby and Robert Anders. He is survived by his wife, Maude Crouse Anders of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Deloris Anders of Sparta; two grandsons, Darrell Anders and wife, Marlia of Sparta, and David Anders and wife Debbie of Yadkinville; a brother, Charlie L. Anders of Sparta; and three step-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Bethany Community Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Dean and Deloris Anders, 206 Collins Road, Sparta.
VINCENT
Mr. Arthur Howard Vincent, age 78, of 78 Joines St., Sparta, died Tuesday morning, January 24, 2006, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Vincent of the home; two daughters, Linda Ehlers and husband Larry of Sparta; Holly Gieger of New Jersey; three sons, Scott Vincent and wife Debbie of New Jersey, Randy Vincent of Florida, and Jeff Vincent and wife Joanne of New Jersey; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Vincent and wife Dorothy of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews. There are no local services planned. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to The First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 668, Sparta, NC 28675. WHITAKER
Thomas Earl Whitaker, age 51, of 477 Wolfe Road, Sparta, died Saturday evening, January 21, 2006, at his home. He was the son of the late Ed and Ina McMillan Whitaker and was preceded in death by a brother, Edward. He is survived by his companion of 28 years, Eva Fender; a daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Jeffrey Moxley of Sparta; a grandson, Steven Moxley; two sisters and a brother-in-law, June Moxley of Sparta, and Geneva and Jerry Bare of Glade Valley; and two brothers, Carlis Paul Whitaker of Sparta and Billy Dean Whitaker of Marion, NC. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 24th at the Evans cemetery in the Twin Oaks Community near Sparta. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. DIMMETTE
Billie Jean Dimmette (Blevins) nee Dancy, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2006 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was predeceased by her sisters, Zella Minton (Myers), Stella Wingler and Nell Weaver; her brothers, Ezra Dancy and Charles Dancy; her first husband, Kenneth Blevins; her husband, Charlie Dimmette; as well as her only son, Kenneth Blevins. Billie and Kenneth were married
in 1949 in Myrtle Beach, SC and were together for 40 years. She married
Charlie Dimmette in 1994 and sadly lost him just two years later. Billie is survived by her friend and sister, Margie Kilby and her husband Harvie; her daughter, Cassandra Goodwin nee Blevins and her husband Stephen; and her grandchildren, Ashley, Robb, Lindsay and David, their spouses and their children, Billie’s great-grandchildren. She was known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as their loving, funny and wonderful “GG” (Great Grammy). Billie will also be greatly missed by the many nieces and nephews in her life, her neighbors, her friends from Fenton, Michigan, Church and here in Sparta - friends like Madeline Shepherd who loved her. To know Billie was to know how important her family, relatives and many friends were to her. She surrounded herself with pictures, art work by her grandchildren and the love of anyone who knew her. Billie will be missed by many for a very long time. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, January 18, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. today at the funeral home. NICHOLS
Mr. Roger Lee Nichols, age 55, of 8781 Glade Valley Road, Ennice, died Monday, January 16, 2006, at his home. He was the son of the late, Lee and Alice Nichols. He is survived by his wife, Senith Geier Nichols of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Kathy Nichols of Independence, Va; two nieces, Sheena Nichols and Holly Nichols, both of Independence; and a brother-in-law, Ken Geier of Port Angeles, Washington. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m Thursday, January 19th, at the Mount Olivet cemetery at Baywood, Virginia. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however, friends may call at the home at any time. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to help on funeral expenses. COOLIE
Betty Bare Coolie, age 45, of Hagerstown, Maryland, died Thursday, January 12, 2006, at her home. She was preceded in death by her father, Hobert Bare of Hagerstown, Maryland.She is survived by three children; five brothers, all of Maryland; and a sister, also of Maryland. She is the niece of the late Raye Bare Rector of Sparta. She is also survived by uncles and aunts, Ottis and Betty Bare of Sparta, Jerry and Geneva Bare of Glade Valley, Gilbert and May Bare of Sparta and Bennie Rector of Sparta. Funeral services and burial will be held in Hagerstown, Maryland, at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 17th.
BURKE
Trinity William (Bill) Edward Burke, 81 lost his courageous fight with lymphoma on Jan. 13, 2006 at the High Point Regional Health System Cancer Center. He was born Oct. 9, 1924 in Baltimore, MD the son of Pearl Offelman and Charles Raymond Burke. He proudly served as a gunner’s mate in US Navy in World War II. After the war he met and married
the love of his life, the former Viola Carpenter at the Lord Baltimore Hotel. Together they had a daughter, Billie and son, Danny. He enjoyed a successful career with Ogden Foods Corporation from which he retired after twenty-five years of service. After retiring he and Vi moved to Sparta, NC, and later moved to High Point, NC, to be closer to their children. Bill went to work for Atlantic Insurance and Realty for sixteen years and formed a lifelong friendship with owner Cam Cridlebaugh. Bill proudly completed GTCC’s GED program where he tested on a college level. He was a resident of High Point for twenty-two years and a member of First Wesleyan Church at Providence Place. Bill is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Vi, and favorite cat, Misty, of the home; a beloved son, Danny and his wife, Candy of Lexington; his cherished daughter, Billie Marsh and her husband Keith of Trinity; and one grandchild, Danny Lee Burke of Baltimore, Maryland. Bill had been a loving foster-grandparent. He was a proud and committed family man. His family cherishes the blessing of having had him as our patriarch. He will be sorely missed. A family service will be held on Sunday Jan. 15 at 11:00 am in Sparta, NC and a memorial service will be held on Tuesday January 17 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm at First Wesleyan Church at Providence Place in High Point, NC. Mrs. Verna Caudill Perry, age 84, of 479 Savannah Lane, Glade Valley, died Thursday morning, January 12, 2006, at the Ekin Health Care Center. She was the widow of Buster Perry and was preceded in death by an infant sister and a brother, Boyd Caudill. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Richard Cole of Cambridge, Maryland; two sons, Walter Perry and Jimmy Perry, both of the home; a sister, Opal Edwards of Sparta; two brothers, Paul Caudill and Claude Caudill, both of Sparta; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 15th, at the Landmark Union Baptist Church at Whitehead. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. BASOM
Carol Glen Basom, age 71, of 254 Williams Lane, Sparta, died Friday, January 6, 2006, at her home. Carol was born in Daniels Run, West Virginia, on November 15, 1934, to Ralph E. and Arvella Everson Maffett. She retired from Ohio Bell as a supervisor of payroll. She was a volunteer at SunBridge of Alleghany and the Council on Aging, where she delivered meals. She is survived by three sisters, Ruth Rogers of Jackson, Michigan; Jean Davis of Columbia Station, Ohio and Opal Fernandez of Las Angeles, California. She was blessed with good friends, Jean Leonard of Coca Ready, Florida, and George and Debbie White of Sparta, just to name a few. There are no local services planned. Mrs. Phyllis Ann Clark Sparks, age 66, of 104 Sparks Ridge Lane, Sparta, died Monday evening, January 9, 2006, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She is survived by her husband, Clarence Edward Sparks of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Scottie Sizemore of Sparta; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Eula Sparks of Sparta, Rex Allen and Velma Sparks of Piney Creek, and David and Angela Sparks, all of Sparta; her mother, Margie Nelson of Rocky Gap, Va; a step-son, Clarence Sparks, Jr. of Charlotte; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Arvin Nelson of Rocky Gap, Va; and a sister, Elizabeth King of Rocky Gap, Va. He is survived by her mother, Raye Sheets Long and father, James Long, both of the home; a daughter, Megan Long of Kansas City, Kansas; a sister, Kandy Holubec and husband Ricky of Mt. Vernon, Arkansas; three brother, James Long, Jr. of Arkansas, Gregory Long and wife Diana of Overland Park, Kansas and Douglas Long of the home; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 10th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Peak Creek cemetery at Laurel Springs.
