Mrs. Camilla Bernardi Leggiero, age 85, of Ridgecrest Assisted Living , Mount Airy, NC, died Thursday morning, January 5, 2006, at the Center. She was the widow of Louis Leggiero. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Barry Poole of Ennice, Angela and Bob Yacano of Mt. Airy, and a son and daughter-in-law, John and Kathy Leggiero of Catskill, New York; three sisters, Anna Turner of Norwich, New York, Antoinette Natoli of Norwich, New York, and Rose Marie and Bill Fisher of Norwich, New York; a brother, Steve Bernardi and wife Leslie of Norwich, New York; grandchildren, Mark Yacano, Lisa VanDyke, Stephen Leggiero, Megan Poole, Jessie Poole and Louis Poole; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 9th, at the Church of the Holy Apostle St. Bartholomew. A Rosary Service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Wilson Funeral Home in Norwich, New York. A visitation will follow from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Hospice of Surry County, 1326 N. Main St., Mt. Airy, NC 27030. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at Ridgecrest Assisted Living in Mt. Airy. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the local arrangements.

ROTEN
Johnsie Faye Bare Roten, age 88, of 7701 Glade Valley Road, Ennice, and formerly of Ashe County, went home to be with her Heavenly Father, Wednesday, January 4, 2006. She was the widow of Bunk Roten and was preceded in death by two daughters, Peggy Woodie and Irene Eldreth; two brothers; four sisters; and two sons-in-law. She is survived by five daughters, Evie Bare and husband Brantley of Jefferson, Joey Woodie and husband Jack of Roanoke, Va, Delphia Ryan of Roanoke, Barbara Bare and husband Phil of Ennice, and Martha Bottomley and husband Blan of Ennice; five sons, Danny Roten and wife Ann of Jefferson; Paul Samuel Roten and wife Verla of Ennice, Billy Roten of Ennice, Timmy Roten and wife Kathy of Jefferson, and Steve Roten and wife Nancy of Sparta; a sister, Nola Walton of Segraves Care Center in Jefferson; a brother, Rudd Bare of Baltimore, Md; 26 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and special friend and caregiver, Darlene Smith of Ennice. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 6th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson. The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home in Sparta.

SAUNDERS
William Terry “Bill” Saunders, Jr., age 81, of 85 Skyland Dr. Sparta, died Monday, January 2, 2006, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Cunningham “Peg” Saunders of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Denise and Franklin Tye Babb of Richmond, Va. and Melissa Kitts of Clover, SC; and three grandchildren, William Andrew and Kellett Babb and Elizbeth Kitts. A private memorial service will be held at Grandview Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to the Alleghany Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 9, Sparta, NC 28675.

WAGONER
Lorraine Holloway Wagoner, 76, of 978 Hwy. 18 N., Sparta, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Clifford and Dorothy Richardson Holloway and was preceded in death by a brother, Dale Holloway. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Paula Wagoner of Sparta and Garland and Tammy Wagoner of Pfafftown; and three grandchildren, Fallon Wagoner of Pfafftown and Garrison and Allie Wagoner of Sparta. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated, or memorials may be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. Box 1287, Sparta, NC 28675.

HAYES
Mrs. Grace Estelle Smith Hayes, age 76, of 112 Deer Haven Road, Sparta, died Thursday, February 23, 2006, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born in Wilkes County to the late, Lester Clarence and Bertha White Smith and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Elledge and Darnell Billings. She is survived by her husband, Archie Hayes of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Gary Murphy of Sparta; a son, Jeff Hayes of Purlear; four grandchildren, Courtney Murphy, Lance Murphy, Gage Hayes and Brooklynn Hayes; six sisters, Annie Billings, Wannie Crysel, Barbara Eller, Peggy Pruitt and Debra Smith, all of Wilkes County, and Kay Fox of Hendersonville; six brothers, C.L. Smith, Claude Smith, Archie Smith and Jerry Smith, all of Wilkes County, and J.C. Smith of Linville and Jessie Smith of Forsyth County; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 26, at the First Baptist Church of Sparta. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral service to lie in state. Burial will follow in the Arbor Grove Methodist Church cemetery in Wilkes County. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Arbor Grove Methodist Church cemetery Fund or the First Baptist Church of Sparta.

IRWIN
Mrs. Doris Catherine Mickelson Irwin, age 86, of Hillcrest Heights, Maryland, died Saturday evening, February 18, 2006, at her summer home in the Whitehead Community near Sparta, NC. She was the widow of Judge Leo H. Irwin. Doris was born, December 31, 1919, in Durham, NC, to the late Fred and Dolly Stansbury Mickelson. She worked as an administrative assistant in Washington, DC, for both houses of congress for many years, including serving as secretary to Congressman Robert “Farmer Bob” Doughton while he was chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. She met her husband to be while working in that capacity. She is survived by four children, Lisa Irwin of Sparta, Patrice Russell and her husband Mark of Glendale, AZ, and Leo H. “Chip” Irwin, Jr. of Hillcrest Heights, MD; Lori Irwin of Hagerstown, MD; a step-daughter, Sandy Nickles and her husband Nick of Annapolis, MD; a granddaughter, Natalie Russell of Glendale, AZ; two sisters, Elizabeth Braswell of Durham, and Marie Broadwell and husband Needham of Chapel Hill, NC; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Reed and her husband Dave of Chapel Hill. A graveside service will be held at the Antioch cemetery in the Stratford Community near Sparta, at a later date. In Lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions are made to, Star Community, Inc., 13757 Broadfording Church Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is assisting the Irwin family.

BILLINGS
Mr. Tyre Willard Billings, age 83, of 21 Independence Road, Sparta, died Friday, February 10, 2006, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was the son of the late Hillary and Martha Billings and was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Billings; and four sisters, Bessie Taylor, Clyde Delp, Alice Toliver and Lillie Caudill. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Lois and Jim Brown of Sparta, and Mary Sell of Sparta; two grandchildren, Marty Chambers and Valerie Brown, both of Sparta; and special friends, Ella Billings of Independence, Va, and Jane Toy of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 13th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will be at the home of Mary Sell, 1043 Pine Swamp Road in Sparta.

SANDERS
Mrs. Ruth Pennell Sanders, age 84, of 179 Combs St, Sparta, died Wednesday evening, February 8, 2006, at SunBridge of Alleghany. She was the daughter of the late, Roby Patterson Pennell and Carrie Lou Mink Penell and the widow of Charles Joseph Sanders, and she was preceded in death by a grandson, Alfred “Al” E. Andrews, Jr.; and a brother and three sisters. Ruth retired from Camp Cheerio. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Juanita “Nita” and Alfred “Al” Andrews of Moravian Falls; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark Patterson and Lori Sanders of Sparta, and Charles Mack “Chuck” Sanders of Glade Valley; two grandchildren, Trey Sanders and wife Rebekka of Laurel Springs, and Paul Scott Sanders of Sparta; a step-grandson, Roland Fielder of Hays; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eloise Johnson and her husband Walter of Roaring River, and Faye Lawhon and her husband Cary of Charlotte; step-daughter, Madeline Joines of Roaring River; and special friend, Earlene Miles of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 11th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Alleghany County Rescue Squad, P.O. WADDELL
Mrs. Eva Mae Sparks Waddell, age 91, of 179 Combs St, Sparta, died Wednesday, February 8, 2006, at SunBridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Mack Waddell and was preceded in death by a son, Robert Waddell. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Junior and Annie Marie Waddell of Sparta, James E. and Shirley Waddell of Elizabeth City, Brice David and Carol Waddell of Laurel Springs, and Walter Wade and Charlotte Waddell of Kernersville; one daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Richard Bobbitt of Winston-Salem; one sister, Pauline Hicks of Traphill; four brothers, Ed Sparks of State Road, Banner Sparks of Zephyr, Roy Lee Sparks of State Road, and Linville Sparks of Traphill; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 11th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the New Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Junior and Annie Marie Waddell on Grandview Drive in Sparta.

EDWARDS
Clyde Marie Edwards, 87, of Havre De Grace, MD, died Feb 1 at Citizens Care Center in Havre De Grace. She was born in Sparta, North Carolina. She was the wife of the late Olen C. Edwards, also of Sparta. Born December 22, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Charles Clayton Wagoner and the late Grace Alice Wagoner. She retired from Bata Shoe Factory after 28 years of service and enjoyed cooking for her family, spending time in the garden and canning. She is survived by one son Keith Edwards, Sr. and wife Karen of Bel Air and daughter in law Barbara Edwards of Havre De Grace; two sisters Elsie Joines of Sparta and Rose Richardson of Old Fort, NC; one brother C.J. Wagoner of Mt. Airy; six grandchildren, Keith Edwards Jr, Karl Edwards, Justin Edwards, Adam Edwards, Lorne Edwards and Brenda Loveless; and 12 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by son, Dennis Edwards of Havre De Grace, sister Ethel Shores, and brother Bert Wagoner. Funeral services will be at Grandeview Funeral Home in Sparta, N.C on Sunday, Feb 5, at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of Elsie Joines, 23 Hal Street in Sparta. Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Alleghany Senior Citizens Center in Sparta for a meal and fellowship.

HAAS
Peggy Jane Greer Haas, age 67, of 120 Oak Street, Jefferson, NC, died Wednesday, February 1, 2006, at the home of her son in Sparta. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Libby Haas of Sparta; two grandchildren, Matthew Haas of Sparta, and Jennifer Bryant and her husband, Lester Ray, of Mt. Airy; a great-grandchild, Kathryn Michele Bryant; a sister, Frances Nadeen Danner and her husband, Robert, of Orlando, Fla; two brothers, Robert “Buck” Greer and his wife, Marzetta, of Lenoir, and James “Jimmy” Greer and his wife, Faye, of Boone; a special friend, Boyd Arnette of Boone; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4th, at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Boone. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will gather at the church at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, P.O. Box 4072 Pittsfield, Massachusetts 01202. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Haas family.
