JOINES
JoAn "Sherry" Joines, 78, formerly of Miller Academy Road, Carrollton, Ga., passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2006. She was born Feb. 16, 1928, in Bronx, N.Y., to the late Grace Britton Newman and George Newman. Mrs. Joines was a retired LPN having worked at Tanner Medical Center. She received her LPN degree from Carroll Technical Nursing School. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Fleet Joines and Melvin James Nelson, also two brothers and a sister. Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Jemelle and Rick Craig of Virginia Beach, Va., Sharlene and James Lack of Kennett, Mo., Marla and Bill Langford of Carrollton and Felicia Edwards of Statesville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Charles and LouAnne Joines and Reece Joines, all of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two sisters, Delores Smith of Roopville and Rosiland Klinger of Walton, N.Y.; and a brother, Barry Newman of Grahamsville, N.Y., several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, March 24, at 2 p.m. from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel with Chaplain Harold Peacock officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, March 24, from noon until the funeral hour. In accordance with the families wishes, Mrs. Joines body was cremated. Mr. Thomas Wilbern McGee, Jr., age 66 of 3061 Rockbridge Road, Troutdale, Virginia, the Flatridge Community, died Friday morning, March 31, 2006, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Felts McGee; a daughter and son-in-law, Erin and Jason Stewart of Mocksville; grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Dinkins and Meredith Leigh Dinkins; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Scott Gregory of High Point; a nephew, James Thomas Ward of King; and a niece, Jayne Ward Johnston of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Christ Episcopal Church in Sparta. A reception will follow the service at the church. There is no visitation at the funeral home. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the McGee family.
DAVIS
Mr. Earl Leonard Davis, age 92, of 942 Bledsoe Creek Road, Sparta, died Friday morning, March 31, 2006, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was the son of the late John Henry and Carrie Shores Davis. He was preceded in death by brothers, Ray, Kemp, Bert, Don, Carl and Clate Davis; and a sister, Grace Vanhoy. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Osborne Davis of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Chip Hamilton of Port Orange, Florida; four sisters, Lorraine Sturgill and husband J.M. of Sparta, Betty Hampton and husband E.C. of Walkertown, Eula Smith of Winston-Salem, and Lucille Blum and husband John of Rustburg, VA; two sisters-in-law, Marge Davis and Lola Davis; a brother-in-law, Plummer Vanhoy; and several nieces and nephews also survive. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 3rd, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Interment services will follow in the Osborne Memorial cemetery near Sparta with full military rites provided by Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. WOOTEN
Paul E. Wooten, age 64 of 264 Fairplains Road, North Wilkesboro, and formerly of Alleghany County, died Friday morning, March 31, 2006, at the Wilkes Regional Medical Center in North Wilkesboro. He was the son of the late Sam and Annie Wooten and was preceded in death by three brothers, Vaughn, John and Clay Wooten; four sisters, Lou Spicer, Marie Spicer, Ruth Maines and Nell Hudson; and two infant brothers, Leff and Rush Wooten. Paul loved to play golf, fish, play baseball, he was a scout leader, a football coach, he served as a disc jockey for WFMX Radio in Statesville and WKBC Radio in North Wilkesboro, and he was a recording artist at Stop Records, in Nashville, Tennessee. He served his country in the U.S. Army and owned and operated the Captain’s Table seafood restaurant in North Wilkesboro for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ward Wooten of the home; three children, Pauletta Warfford and Tracy Wooten, both of Clemmons, and Sammi Sigmon of Conover;, four step-children, Pam Gill of Statesville, Angie Lackie of Hickory, Eddie Jarvis of Millers Creek, and Michael Halsey of Hamptonville; a sister, Ercell Miller of Sparta; and five grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m Sunday, April 2nd at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Whitehead-Joines cemetery near Sparta. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.
BROWN
Mrs. Nellie Archie Phipps Taylor Brown, 93, of Statesville and formerly of Ashe County, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006. Her first husband, James Hardin Taylor, died in 1975. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Robert Newton Brown of Statesville. Also surviving are three children, Larry R. Taylor (Gertrue) of Statesville, Virginia "Tootsie" T. Henderson (James Leroy) of Hamptonville and Gaynell T. Kiser (Earl Jr.) of Statesville; two stepdaughters, Geraldine B. Jarvis of Roaring River and Rachel B. England of Mocksville; a half brother, Claude Roupe of Laurel Springs; and a half sister, Nancy Finney of Sparta. Four grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren also survive. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today, March 31, at Nicholson Funeral Home in Statesville, with the funeral service beginning at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 Saturday evening, April 1, at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 2, in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Richardson cemetery in Ashe County. Nicholson Funeral Home of Statesville is serving the family of Mrs. Brown.
BOONE
Roy Alvin Boone, age 61, of 15 Warden Road, Sparta, died Monday, March 27, 2006, at his home. He was the son of the late Mack and Flora Anders Boone, and was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Boone. He is survived by a daughter, Marsha Boone of Sparta; two sisters, Stella Scarborough of Floyd, Va., and Helen Johnson of Sparta; four brothers, Harry, Bill, Rex and Herbert Boone, all of Sparta; and four grandchildren, Mason, Paul, Alvin and Kenny Mullis. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 29th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the South Fork cemetery at Piney Creek. Mrs. Rosa “Hazel” Smyrski, age 65, Sparta, died Monday morning, March 27, 2006, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Chris and Maude Hooper. Hazel retired from Bowman Gray School of Medicine as a Lab Technician. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Sparta. Hobbies included cross-stitching and reading. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Stephen “Joe” Smyrski of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Edward Light of Durham, and Catherine and Timothy Reagan of Hillsborough, New Jersey; three grandchildren, Erin Light of Durham, and Juni and Cedar Reagan, both of Hillsborough, New Jersey; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Jan Hooper of Lexington; a sister, Geraldine Hooper of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 30th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Mr. Jim Fields Brown, age 71, of Sparta, died Saturday, March 18, 2006, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was the son of the late Fred and Donna Hash Brown. He is survived by his wife, Lois Billings Brown of the home; a daughter, Valerie Lynn Brown of Sparta; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Irene Brown of Sparta; Joe and Janet Brown of Independence, Va; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Dorothy Mabe of Winston-Salem, Sue and Phillip Caldwell of Boomer, Evelyn and Charles Earp of Sparta, Donna Chapman of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Linda and Joe Hornung of Sparta; a special sister-in-law, Mary Sell of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 20th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Elk Creek cemetery near Sparta. Mrs. Lillie Mae Johnson Bledsoe, age 60, of 2700 Big Laurel Road, Creston, NC., died Friday, March 17, 2006, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was the daughter of the late Talmage and Naomi Brown Johnson of Alleghany County. She is survived by her husband, Lee Roy Bledsoe of the home; four children, Ella Mae Brown of North Wilkesboro, Sheila Ann Triplett of Spokane, Washington, Jim Triplett of Spokane, Washington, and David Triplett of Boise, Idaho; three step-daughters, April Bare of Deep Gap, Lea Stanley of Mtn. City, TN; Joey Bledsoe of Boone; and one sister, Eula Faye Hodge of Independence, Va.; one nephew, James Hodge of Independence, Va; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 21st, at the Glade Creek Union Baptist Church near Sparta. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral service to lie in state. Mrs. Berkie Poe White Lindamood, age 90, of 433 Carriage Hill Drive, Pulaski, Virginia, died Friday, March 17, 2006, at her residence. She was preceded in death by husband, Stanley (Pat) White, and was the widow of Ralph Eugene Lindamood. Berkie was born in Alleghany County on April 30, 1915, to the late Osborne and Effie Reeves Poe. Among her many interests, she loved to write poetry and some of her work was published in World Treasury of Golden Poems. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Gill of Roanoke, VA., and Patsy Tipton of Fort Washington, MD; two sons, Ralph Eugene Lindamood, Jr. and Daniel T. Lindamood of La Plata, MD; one sister, Marge Beckwith of Royal Palm Beach, Fla; three grandchildren and spouses, Kim and Tommy Whittaker, Becky and David Nunley, and Tim and Anna Gill; four great-grandchildren, Robert Gill, Beth Nunley Lancaster, Elizabeth Chitwood and Brice Gill; and three great-great-grandchildren, Cassidy Lancaster, Jacey Lancaster and Braxton Gill. Mr. Raymond Richard Eller, age 52, of 129 Deerfield Lane, Sparta, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his parents, Raymond and Nina Johnson Eller of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Eddie and Vickie Eller of Glade Valley; and three nieces, Carolyn Creed and husband Jimmy, and Diva Eller, all of Glade Valley; Jackie Perry and husband Joe of Ennice.
