CARTER Mr. Donald Matthew Carter, age 52, of 268 Ward Circle, Glade Valley, N.C., died Friday, June 23, 2000, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Gaby Spatz Carter of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David and Carmen Carter of Raleigh, N.C., and Darren Carter of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren; his mother, Hazel Pruitt Carter of Sparta; one sister, Brenda Johnson of Galax, Va.; and his maternal grandmother, Boyde Pruitt of Sparta. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Cherry Lane Fire Dept. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the arrangements.
TREDWAY The Reverend William Marshall Treadway, IV, 87, died Thursday morning June 22, 2000, at his family's home in Mebane NC, from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. He was the son of the late William Marshall Treadway, III and Cora Whitmore Tredway of Chatham, Va. Rev. Tredway was ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in June 1966. He served churches in the Wilmington, Appamattox, Albemarle, and New Hope presbyteries. He retired from the ministry in 1982. Rev. Tredway is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, William Marshall "Buck" Tredway, V and Kirsten Hentz Tredway of Mebane, and a grandson, William Marshall Tredway VI, also of Mebane, along with a multitude of nieces, nephews and life-long friends. He was preceded in death on February 16, 1997, by his wife, Freddie Sue Sexton Tredway, of Sparta, N.C. Rev. Tredway was the last living member of a family of five siblings; Marjorie Cunningham Tredway Edmundson of Richmond, Va., Alice Rebecca Tredway Overbey of Chatham, Va., Robinet Whitmore Tredway of Richmond, Va., and Fredrich Milton Tredway of Richmond, Va. Visitation will be at Grandview Funeral Home, Grandview Drive, in Sparta, from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 26. Funeral services will be held at the Sparta Presbyterian Church, on Tuesday, June 27, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at the New Haven Church of the Brethren in Twin Oaks. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Alzheimer's Association or The Hospice League of Alamance-Caswell (Burlington, NC).
BOLLIN Mrs. Vivian Johnson Bollin, age 83, of Cheek St., Sparta, N.C., and Wilmington, N.C., died Monday evening, June 19, 2000, in the Cornelia Nixon Davis Private Nursing Facility in Wilmington, N.C. She was the widow of Melvin N. Bollin. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lark and Tom Futch of Wilmington; one granddaughter; Scarlett Vivian Futch of Wilmington; one sister, Violet Horton of Johnson City, Tn.; and one sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson of Sparta. A graveside service will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Sparta Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home. FOBES Mr. Max Richard Fobes, Sr., age 73, of 639 Big Oak Road, Ennice, NC, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gwen Hendricks Fobes of the home; one son, Rick Fobes, Jr. of Sparta, N.C.; two grandchildren, Angela Dawn Miles and Ronald Dayton Fobes; one great-grandchild, Alexis Miles; two brothers, Robert Dale Fobes of Longmont, Colorado and Donald Alex Fobes of Houston, Texas; one sister, Patricia Fobes Doremus of Houston, Texas; and two brothers-in-law, Robert J. Hendricks Sr., of California and Joseph D. Hooker of Dayton, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Sparta United Methodist Church with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. NICHOLS Mrs. Alice J. Nichols, age 70, of 8793 Glade Valley Road, Ennice, N.C., died Sunday evening, June 11, 2000, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, N.C. She was the widow of Lee Nichols. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Senith Nichols of Ennice, and Gary and Kathy Nichols of Independence, Va.; two grandchildren, Shenna and Holly Nichols of Independence, Va.; two brothers, Morris Derreberry of Gastonia, N.C., and Albert Derreberry of Carrollton, Ga.; eight sisters, Jewell Carico of Ennice, N.C., Evelyn Hawthorn of Marietta, Ga., Hope King of Canton, N.C., Edna Tull of Andrews, N.C., Sten Brown of Marble, N.C., Berdie Ledbetter of Robbinsville, N.C., Lura Thompson of Marble, N.C., and Essie Ledford of Franklin, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. PHIPPS Mrs. Emma Lou Jarvis Phipps, age 75, of 64 Lilly Pond Lane, Ennice, N.C., died Saturday evening, June 3, 2000, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, N.C.. She is survived by her husband, Charlie "Buster" Phipps of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Mary Jo Phipps of Roaring River, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Chuck Roberts of Sunnyvale, California; three grandchildren, Kim Marino, and Rachel and Gabriel Phipps; four great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Redell and Cora Lee Jarvis of Ennice, N.C., and Martin and Vivian Jarvis of Lorton, Va.; special sisters-in-law, Ola Mae Murphy and Betty Kilgore; and several nieces and nephews.
