THOMPSON Mary Ennice Osborne Thompson, age 83 formerly of Sparta, died Thursday morning, August 31, 2000, at the Putnam General Hospital in Eatonton, Georgia. She is survived by her husband: Alton W. Thompson; a daughter: Ann Thompson Rutherford of Eatonton, Ga.; a sister: Susie Fleetwood of Monroe, N.C.; two granddaughters: Mary Rebecca Long and Sally O. Bombich; and three great-grandchildren: Atlanta Marie Long, Tyler and Ryan Bombich. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Walter Frank Osborne, Jr. and Thomas Zack Osborne. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, September 3, 2000, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Rev. Thom Burelson and Dr. James Frazier will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
JOHNSON Mr. Walter Eugene Johnson, age 86, of 975 Old Barrett Rd., Ennice, N.C., died Wednesday morning, August 30, 2000, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. He is survived by four daughters: Ella Billings, Brenda Cochran and Juanita Combs, all of Sparta and Patsy Daniel of Eden, N.C.; two sons: Michael David and Omar Johnson both of Ennice, N.C.; a sister: Edith Clonch of Lenoir, N.C.; 25 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife: Maude Johnson and a son: Walter Lee Johnson. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, September 1, 2000, at 2:00 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial to follow in the Scottville Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Reeves Jones and Bishop James Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, August 31, 2000, from 7-9 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta and at other times at the home of the daughter, Ella Billings at 462 Maple Street, Sparta, NC.
HARRIS Mrs. Lura Cynthia Harris, age 99, of 1844 Macedonia Church Road, Sparta, NC, died Monday morning, Aug. 21, 2000, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. She was the widow of Thomas Harris. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Olen and Shirley Harris of Sparta, NC, Bert and Sue Harris of Piney Creek, NC; four daughters and three sons-in-law: Mae and Edward Hoffman of Newport News, Va., Mary and Rayford Harris of Mocksville, NC, Mable Parsons of Campbellsville, Ky and Sue and Linton Andrews of Independence, Va.; one brother: Andy Cleary of Sparta, NC; one sister: Louise Pruitt of Sparta, NC; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and two special friends: Grace Fender and Nancy Shumate. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial to follow in the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Rev. BROWN Mrs. Veatrice Billings Moxley Brown, age 69, of 140 Taylor Street, Mt. Airy, NC, died Friday morning, August 18, 2000, in the Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. She is survived by her husband: Steven Brown of the home; one daughter: Brenda Shew of Pilot Mtn., NC; two sons: Ronnie Moxley of Asheboro, NC and Stanley Moxley of Sparta, NC; six grandchildren: Lisa Shaw, Dale Moxley, Stephanie Jolly, Shannon Moxley, Ryan Moxley and Chonda Moxley; three great-grandchildren: Brandy Shaw, Beth Shaw and Tristen Moxley; three sisters: Ethelene Pruitt of Yadkinville, NC, Irene Ashley and Georgia Feene Caudill both of North Wilkesboro, NC; and one brother: J.C. Billings of Ohio. She was preceded in death by her first husband: Joe Bill Moxley. BRINEGAR Mrs. Clyde Billings Brinegar, age 84, of 21 Clyde Lane, Laurel Springs, N.C., died Friday morning, August 11, 2000, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Robert Brinegar. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Emma Lou Crouse and Edna Marie Brinegar. She is survived by four sons, Lewis Brinegar of Coral Springs, Fla., Gladys Brinegar of Forest Hill, Md., and Robert Brinegar and Richard (Ricky) Brinegar, both of Sparta; six daughters, Georgia Shumate of Forest Hill, Md., Imogene Cantler of Laurel Springs, and Rosalie Sturgill, JoAnn Johnson and Nancy Ratcliff, all of Sparta and Jackie Stanley of Laurel Springs; 36 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren; four half-sisters: Beatrice Brown of Mt. Airy, NC, Ethelene Pruitt of Yadkinville, NC, and Irene Ashley and Georgie Feene Caudill both of North Wilkesboro, NC; and one half-brother: J.C. Billings of Atlanta, Georgia. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, August 13, 2000, at 2:00 p.m. at the Westside Independent Baptist Church, with Burial in the New Salem Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Smith, Rev. Lauderdale, Fla., Kelly Hohn of Jacksonville, NC, Kim Parsons of Sparta, NC, Cathy Oliver of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sidney Schaefer of Ennice, NC, Sara Moore of Coral Springs, Fla., Ellen Schaefer of Coral Springs, Fla., and Sandy Weems of Cleveland, Alabama; 17 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; an aunt and uncle: Betty and Russ Kuehn of Dunnellon, Fla.; and special friends: Pat Pennington, Pat Davis, Mary Dalton and Gina Maines. FOBES Mrs. Gwen Hendricks Fobes, age 72, of 639 Big Oak Road, Ennice, N.C., died Saturday morning, August 5, 2000, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Max Richard Fobes, Sr. She is survived by one son and friend: Rick Fobes, Jr. and Sharon Wood of Sparta, NC; her grandchildren: Angela Dawn Miles and husband Michael, and Ronald Dayton Fobes and wife Abby; great-grandchild: Alexis Miles; brother and sister-in-law: Bob and Janie Hendricks of Nevada; and half-brother and wife: Joe and Lucia Hooker of Beaver Dam, Ohio. SHUPE Mr. Mainess Shupe, age 78, of Sparta, died Thursday evening, August 3, 2000, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. He is survived by two sons: Mainess Edward Shupe of Ocala, Fla. and Bob Jensen of Palm Bay, Fla.; one sister: Elsie Reprogal of Maryland and one brother: Charles Shupe of Maryland. He was preceded in death by his wife: Dorothy Maxine Shupe. TODD Mrs. Gladys Caudill Todd, age 69, of 5183 Pleasant Home Church Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, evening at her home. She is survived by her husband: Rex Todd of the home; four daughters: Brenda Roark, Gail Reece, Gloria Murray and Jane Absher all of Sparta; three step-sons: Roger Todd, Tommy Todd and Wayne Todd all of Sparta; two sisters: Grace Sexton and Muriel Toliver, both of Sparta; one brother: Marvin Caudill, Jr., of Independence, Va.; and fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
