GAMBILL Mrs. Ann Truitt Gambill, age 91, of 110 East Cheek Street, Sparta, NC, died Wednesday morning, September 27, 2000, at her home. She was the widow of Robert Eugene Gambill. She is survived by three sisters: Wanda Carpenter of Sparta, NC, Elizabeth Heard of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Dorothy Miller of Tallmadge, Ohio; and one brother: Foster Truitt of Sparta, NC. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, September 29, 2000, at 2:00 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial to follow in the Elk Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. GRUBB Mrs. Maude Hanes Grubb, age 92, of Highway 113, Piney Creek, NC, died Monday Morning, September 25, 2000, in the Sunbridge Nursing Center in Sparta, NC. She was the widow of John Grubb. She is survived by two daughters: Rebecca Wolfe of Mercersburg, Pa., and Sue Finney of Sparta, NC; one son: John Grubb of Piney Creek, NC; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers: Ralph Hanes and Thurmond Hanes both of California; and one sister: Mabel Miller of California. She was preceded in death by three daughters: Ellen, Bonnie and Mary Lou. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 27, 2000, at 11:00 AM at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Burial to follow in the Church Cemetery. Rev. D. R. Gilliam will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the church. BROOKS Mrs. Della Scott Brooks, age 100, of Foggy Mtn. Road, Glade Valley, N.C., died Sunday, September 24, 2000, at her daughter Ellen's home on Mtn. View Road, Glade Valley. She was the widow of Frank Brooks. She is survived by six daughters: Mabel McKnight of Glade Valley, NC, Elsie Moore of Murfreesboro, Tn., Louise Smith of Glade Valley, NC, Ruby Himmer of Abingdon, Md., Ruth Mitchell of Havre de Grace, Md and Ellen Brooks of Glade Valley, NC; two sons: Roy Brooks of Fredricksburg, Va. and Bobby Brooks of Bowling Green, Va.; and twenty-five grandchildren, forty-one great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two children: Roxie Royall and Clifford Brooks. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning, September 26, 2000, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Mtn. View Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. HAWKS Mr. Herman Lee Hawks, age 74, of 161 Rocky Ridge Road, Cana, Va., died Saturday, September 23, 2000, in the Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. He is survived by his wife: Mrs. Wilma Crotts Hawks of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law: Gail and Richard Combs, Carol and James Edwards, Helen and Leon Hawks and Allison and Johnny Barr all of Cana, Va.; three sons and a daughter-in-law: Mark and Teresa Hawks of Sparta, NC, David Lee Hawks and Kenneth J. HAWTHORNE Mr. Herbert Columbus Hawthorne, age 83, of 490 Sullivan Road, Statesville, NC, died Monday Morning, September 18, 2000, at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born April 23, 1917, in Alleghany County, NC, and was the son of the late John Ross Hawthorne and Lela Phipps Hawthorne. He attended Sparta Elementary School and graduated from Sparta High School. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill, class of 1940, and did further studies at the University of Indiana. He was a member of the North Carolina Highway Patrol before entering the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was married to Katherine Jane Grier on November 24, 1942, and following release from the U.S. Navy became a partner in the Grier Cotton Company in Statesville where he continued to be active for 35 years. Mr. Hawthorne was active in community affairs as a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Statesville Rotary Club. In state politics, he was a lifelong advocate of the Democratic Party. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hawthorne is survived by three daughters: Grier Hawthorne Buck of Tuscon, Az., Dr. Mary H. Hawthorne of Pittsboro, NC, and Ann Parks Hawthorne of Washington, D.C.; one grandson: Shane Willoughby MacNicholas of Charleston, S.C.; one brother: James Kemp Hawthorne of Mooresville, NC; and one sister: Emaline Hawthorne Britton of Danville, Va. A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Mr. Hawthorne will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, September 21, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Grant M. Sharp officiating. Interment will follow at 4:00 PM Thursday at the Elk Creek Cemetery in Alleghany County. The family will be assembled at the residence where friends may visit any time. CLODFELTER Mrs. Reba Cleo Pruitt Clodfelter, age 64, of 1072 US Highway 21 South, Sparta, NC, died Monday, September 18, 2000, in the Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, NC. She was the widow of James Harvey Clodfelter. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: Arnold and Sherry Clodfelter of Sparta , NC; two sisters: Rose Harless of Sparta, NC and Rosa Lee Pruitt of Morganton, NC; one brother and sister-in-law: Herbert and Myrtle Pruitt of Sparta, NC; six sisters-in-law: Rosie Hughes, Effie Burkhart both of Lexington, NC, Lillie Bailey of Mt. Gilead, NC, Emma Asbell of Thomasville, NC, and Louisa Pruitt and Marie Pruitt both of Sparta, NC; one brother-in-law: Cope Woodle of Lexington, NC. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, September 20, 2000, at 2:00 PM at the Whitehead Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Whitehead Joines Cemetery. IRWIN Mrs. Carol Taylor Irwin, age 52, of 307 Irwin Valley Road, Sparta, NC, died Wednesday evening, September 13, 2000, in the Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC. She is survived by her husband: Bobby Irwin of the home; one daughter: Jennifer Irwin of Sparta, NC; one son and daughter-in-law: Bryan and Tammy Irwin of Clemmons, NC; her mother: Ruth Evelyn Sanders Taylor; and two sisters: Barbara T. CROUSE Miss Minnie Virginia Crouse, age 88, of Crestview Apartments, Sparta, NC, died Tuesday morning, September 12, 2000, in the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. She is survived by two sisters: Euna Sadler and Maggie Williams both of Sparta, NC. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside Services will be conducted Friday, September 15, 2000, at 11:00 AM at the Sparta Cemetery. Elder Earl Baker will officiate. WALLS Mrs. Edna Rumley Walls, age 76, of 1084 Ridge Road, High Meadows Estates, Roaring Gap, NC, died Sunday, September 10, 2000, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. Mrs. Walls was born on March 29, 1924, in Alamance County, NC to the late J. Dewey and Octavia Wilson Rumley. She was a graduate of the Elon College High School and College. She taught school for 32 years in the Winston-Salem, Forsyth County School System. She was a member of the College Park Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC, a resident of Alleghany County for 33 years, a substitute teacher for the Alleghany County Schools, the President of the Sparta Women's Club, past officer of the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034 Women's Auxiliary; a member of the High Meadows Women's Golf Association; a member of the Retired Teacher's Association of Forsyth County, NC and a Past Chairman of the Relay for Life. She is survived by her husband: Joe B. Walls of the home; one daughter and son-in-law: Dyette (Dee) and Jim Pendleton of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren: Lauren, Jimmy and Ryan all of Charlotte, NC; and one sister: Helen Rumley Cleek of Elon College, NC. GLASCO Miss Bessie Marie Glasco, age 80, of 121 Edmonds Road, Ennice, N.C., died Sunday evening, September 3, 2000, at her home. She is survived by four sisters and three brothers-in-law: Joyce Higgins, Virginia Harless, Loyce and Ray Tompkins, all of Ennice, Nellie and Roger Starnes of Hiddenite, N.C. and Homer Spears of Ennice; fifteen nephews; four nieces; several great-nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Savannah United Methodist Church with Burial in the Edmonds Community Cemetery.
