CROUSE Mr. Roy Lee Crouse, 70, of 587 Napco Road, died at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC on January 29, 2001. He was born on February 26, 1930, in Alleghany County to the late Greek and Gladys Choate Crouse. Mr. Crouse retired from the Dr. Grabow/Sparta Pipe Company and became a full-time dairy farmer until his death. He had special interest in spending time with his granddaughters while riding horses or eating out, attending stock car races and looking at God's scenic creations. He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Crouse. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bobbie Jean Maines Crouse of the home; a son and daughter-in-law: Ricky Lee and Joann Crouse of Sparta; two granddaughters: Brenda Crouse and Thalassa Vanhoy both of Sparta; and a sister-in-law: Ennice Monk of Ocala, Fla. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, February 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hobert Dowell and Rev. James Smith officiating. JOHNSON Martha Rogers Johnson, wife of Dr. Terry Johnson, died January 27th, 2001, at their home after a lengthy illness. She was born August 22, 1949 to Patsy Sheppard Rogers and Ernest Rogers. She graduated from North Forsyth High School in Winston-Salem in 1968, and from Central Piedmont Community College in 1970 with a degree in Dental Hygiene. Surviving are her two sons, Zachary T. Johnson and Samuel R. Johnson, in addition to her husband and parents. A sister, Mrs. Kevin (Robin) Spainhour of Winston-Salem, NC survives as does her brother, Robert Rogers, his wife Deborah and their son Landon of High Point, NC. Martha Practiced dental hygiene with her husband for 20 years, and was active in many community organizations including First Baptist Church of Sparta, PTO, Alleghany County Band Boosters, Boy Scout Troop 299, and the Second District Dental Society Auxiliary of North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. at Grandview Funeral Home in Sparta Tuesday evening, January 30th. The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Sparta at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 31st, with interment in Sparta Cemetery. Gifts may be made to Hospice of Alleghany County, P.O. JOHNSON Mr. Clyde Monroe Johnson, age 95, of 29 Glade Creek Road, Sparta, NC, died Monday morning, January 22, 2001, at his home. He is survived by two sons: Hersel Johnson of Ennice, NC, and Kemp Johnson of Lexington, NC; one daughter: Dorothy Jean Miles of Statesville, NC; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at 2:00 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial in the Glade Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. HAWKINS Mr. Billy Gene Hawkins, age 55, of 1051 Delp Road, Laurel Springs, NC, died Sunday, January 21, 2001, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. He is survived by his wife: Patricia Vandeveer Hawkins of the home; three daughters: Lori Richardson of North Wilkesboro, NC, Shari Newton of Laurel, Delaware and Billie Lynn Taylor of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; one sister: Edna Milmen of Delaware; and one brother: Jimmy Russ of Ohio. Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. at Mr. Hawkins' Homeplace at 1051 Delp Road, Laurel Springs, NC. Rev. Larry Atwood will officiate. ABSHER Mrs. Mazie Halsey Absher, age 57, of 582 Wolfe Road, Sparta, NC, died Saturday, January 20, 2001, in the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, NC. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: Michael and Nita Absher of Lansing, NC; two daughters and sons-in-law: Debbie and Ronnie Simmons of Mt. Airy, NC and Kathy and Randy Sexton of Sparta, NC; three grandchildren; one step-grandson; three brothers: Glenn Halsey of Street, Maryland, Bobby Joe Halsey of High Point, NC and Billy Rector of Sparta, NC; one sister: Lois Crouse of Sparta, NC; and several nieces and nephews. ASHWORTH Mrs. Alma Simmons Ashworth, age 79, of 157 North Cricket Drive, North Wilkesboro, N.C., died Saturday afternoon, January 13, at her home. She is survived by her husband: Dwight Ashworth of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law: Raymond and Barbara Burkentine of Sugar Grove,Virginia, W.L. and Elizabeth Simmons of Wytheville, VA; two daughters and a son-in-law, Della Richardson of North Wilkesboro, Georgia and Kenneth Billings of Glade Valley, NC; two sisters: Myrtle Smith and Anna Lee Copeland, both of North Wilkesboro; 14 grandchildren eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Saddle Mountain Cemetery. DOWELL Mr. William Paul Dowell, 66, of Fairview Rd., Galax, Va., died Thursday, January 11, 2001 at his home. He is survived by two brothers, Woodrow Dowell of N. Wilkesboro, N.C., and Lonnie Dowell of Roaring River, N.C.; two sisters, Rosa Lee Neaves of Lansing, N.C. and Laura Byers of Wilkesboro, N.C.; his guardian, Deanna Maines of Galax, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery.Rev. Fred Jennings will officiate. HOLBROOK Mr. Britt L. Holbrook, age 91, of 2601 Topia Road, Piney Creek, NC, died Sunday, January 7, 2001, at the home of his daughter. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Gaye and Allen Blevins of Piney Creek, NC; one son and daughter-in-law: Billy H. and Millie Holbrook of Notasulga, Alabama; two grandsons: Scott Blevins of Wilkesboro, NC and Johnny Britt Holbrook of Palm Bay, Fla.; two granddaughters: Gwyn Epley of Opelika, Alabama and Karen Bennett of Eufaula, Alabama; three sisters: Jean Miller of Laurel Springs, NC, Ikie Davis of North Wilkesboro, NC and Opal Stoker of Beckley, W. CHURCH Mrs. Irene Brown Church, age 81, of 486 Stratford Road, Sparta, NC, died Wednesday, January 3, 2001, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law: Lorraine and J.D. Brooks of Laurel Springs, NC; one grandson: Johnny Brooks of Butner, NC; four sisters: Eva Billings of Sparta, NC, Marie Busic of Piney Creek, NC, Jessie Delp of Woodlawn, Va. and Louise Paisley of Winston-Salem, NC; two brothers: Colonel Brown of Sparta, NC and Russell Brown of Woodlawn, Va. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband: Osco Church; a granddaughter: Kim Brooks; two sisters: Lessie Delp and Velma Ross; and a brother: Horace Brown. VAUGHN Mr. John Vaughn, age 87, of 441 Vaughn Rd. Ennice, N.C., died Wednesday Morning, January 3, 2001, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife: Thelma Greene Vaughn of the home; one son and daughter-in-law: Nelson and Brenda Vaughn of Ennice, N.C.; three daughters and sons-in-law: Judy and Harold Baldwin, Gaye and Guy Galyean and Barbara and William McGrady, all of Ennice, N.C.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother: Paul Vaughan of Ennice, NC; and three sisters: Hazel Cleary and Hattie Bedsaul, both of Ennice, N.C. and Cleo Swicegood of Welcome, N.C. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, January 5, 2001, at 11:00 AM at the Little Pine Church of the Brethren with Burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Jay Tilley, Rev.
