BROWN Mrs. Letha E. Brown, age 84, of Rising Sun, Md., died Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the Union Hospital in Rising Sun, Md. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law: Elizabeth B. and Chris Johnson of Amelia, Va., Louise B. and Russell Hall of Seligman, Az., Irene B. and Gerry Hand of Glendale, Az. and Rita B. and Rick Davison of Rising Sun, Md.; two brothers: Eld. Ernest Brackins of Low Gap, NC and Ralph E. Brackins of Columbus, Ohio; one sister: Agnes L. Blevins of Oxford, Pa.; and 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Prathers Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. COURTESY ANNOUNCEMENT FROM GRANDVIEW Mr. Wade Holbrook, age 65, of 137 Jackson Ave., Lexington, NC, died Wednesday in the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He is survived by his wife: Gloria Holbrook of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law: Wade Ray and Debbie Holbrook, and Dennis James and Tracey Holbrook all of Lexington, NC; one sister: Blanche Murray of Glade Valley, NC; one brother: Paul Holbrook of Lexington, NC; and four grandchildren: Christie, Bryan, Stacey and Josh Holbrook, all of Lexington, NC. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 PM at the Woodruff Primitive Baptist Church with Burial to follow in the Church Cemetery. CAUDILL Mr. Willard (Bill) Caudill, age 73, of 335 Ballpark Rd., Sparta, NC., died Friday evening, February 23, 2001, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by three brothers: Haywood and Henry Caudill of Laurel Springs, NC and Tom Caudill of Wilkesboro, NC. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Landmark UnionBaptist Church with Burial in the Church Cemetery. ATWOOD Mr. Elgin Atwood, age 70, of 380 Duncan Ridge Road, Sparta, died Tuesday evening, February 20, 2001, at his home. He is survived by his wife: Lillie Cox Atwood of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law: Betty and Bobby Maines of Sparta, and Dianne and Rick Proffit of Laurel Springs; four grandchildren: Mitch Atwood of Greensboro, Hunter Maines of Sparta, Brian Proffit of Tennessee and Brooke Proffit of Chapel Hill, NC; one brother: Kenneth Atwood of Hillsville, Va.; one sister: Myrtle Michael of Maryland; and mother-in-law: Kate Cox of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon, February 22, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Home Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Church Cemetery. POOLE Mrs. Sadie Crouse Poole, age 85, of 19 Carson Blvd, Sparta, NC, died Monday, February 19, 2001, at her home. She was the widow of Reid Clifton Poole. She is survived by one son: Dale Poole of Sparta, NC; one daughter and son-in-law: Gail and Ron Fannon of Boone, NC; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother: and Earl Crouse of Filer, Idaho. DARNELL Mr. Harold Lee Darnell, age 49, of 444 Missy Circle, Concord, NC, died Monday, February 12, 2001, at the North East Medical Center in Concord, NC. He is survived by two daughters: Crimson Darnell Corene and Amber Lee Darnell Michele both of Charlotte, NC; his parents: Worth and Faye Jenkins Darnell of Charlotte, NC; three brothers: Donnie Ray Darnell of Miami, Fla., Thomas Virgil Darnell and Timothy Estel Darnell both of Charlotte, NC; and one sister: Linda Faye Christie of Sanford, Fla. Several nieces and nephews also survive. PARSONS Mr. Walter Thomas (Tom) Parsons, age 65, of 3555 Highway 21 North, Sparta, NC, died Monday, February 12, 2001, at his home. He is survived by his wife: Eva Edwards Parsons of the home; one daughter and son-in-law: Carol and Jimmy Johnson of Sparta, NC; one granddaughter: Sarah Johnson of Sparta, NC; a step-son: Alton Brooks of Piney Creek, NC; step-mother: Veatrice Parsons of North Wilkesboro, NC; two sisters: Carolyn Parsons of Winston-Salem, NC and Judy Parsons of North Wilkesboro, NC; four brothers: Billy Joe Parsons and Jack Parsons both of North Wilkesboro, NC, Jerry Parsons of Winston-Salem, NC and Glenn Parsons of Charlottesville, Va.; Several nieces and nephews also survive. MELLOW Joseph Anthony Mellow, M.D. of Roaring Gap, NC, died on February 9, 2001, husband of Suzanne R. Mellow. He was born in Mayfield, Pennsylvania, a town 10 miles north of Scranton, Pa. on May 5, 1912. His parents were Orazio Meliado and Mary Caracciolo. Surviving brothers and spouses: Dr. Emil Mellow and Inez Mellow of Satellite Beach, Fla.; Anthony and Eleanor Mellow of Peckville, Pa.; one sister, Mrs. Catherine and deceased brother-in-law: Louis Alimenti of Old Forge, Pa. and a sister-in-law: Helen Mellow of Melbourne, Florida; sister-in-law: Vivienne Fulford of Fairfax Station, Va.; and a brother-in-law: Lewis Tricarick of Troy, New York; sister and brother-in-law: Dr. Lee and Carole Janizcek; step-mother: Irene Varano of Wynnewood, Pa.; step-brother: Peter and wife, Gloria Taraborelli, and step-brother, Robert Taraborelli of Wynnewood, Pa. His first wife, Muriel and two brothers, Dominick and Frank and son-in-law, John Tramontano preceded him in death. Children: Mrs. Mary Louise Tramontano of Erie, Pa., Joanne and husband, Al Jacovec of Winston-Salem; Joseph Mellow, Jr. and wife Donna of Pinnacle, NC; grandchildren: John, Craig, Tracy, Suzanne, Laura, Brittany and Carson; and great-grandchildren: Chelsey, Jarred and Carly. Dr. Mellow graduated from Fordham University in 1934, and New York Medical College in 1938. Prior to World War II, Dr. Mellow interned at Yonkers General Hospital and was a resident at Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital, Mineola, N.Y. and Metropolitan Hospital in New York City, specializing in OB-Gyn. In 1940, Dr. Mellow married Muriel Tricarick and lived in Port Washington, New York where he began his practice until the beginning of World War II. In 1942, Dr. Mellow sailed from Charleston, S.C. to the island of Bora-Bora where he was stationed until 1944. From 1947 until 1973, as a Board Certified OB-Gyn Specialist, he served in many capacities of leadership including chief of staff and chief of Ob-Gyn department at Nassau County Medical Center in Manhasset, N.Y. Dr. Mellow was also on the staff of the North Shore University Hospital and St. Frances Hospital, both in Manhasset. Dr. Mellow was a Fellow of The American College of Surgeons (FACS) and The American Medical Association (AMA). He was a member emeritus of the Alumni Association of New York Medical College. While in Port Washington, N.Y. he was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, and an active member and avid golfer of the North Hempstead Country Club, and a member of the Long Island Pigeon Association. In 1973, Dr. Mellow married Suzanne R. Varano and resided in the golf resort complex of High Meadows in Roaring Gap, NC. From 1974-79, he had a private medical practice in Elkin and was on the staff of the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. In 1979, Dr. Mellow retired but continued to serve the local community in various ways. Along with his friend of 60 years, Dr. Joseph Teta, he assisted the Alleghany County Schools as a sports physician. He served as the doctor for the Cherry Lane Volunteer Fire Department. Being a great enthusiast for the game of golf, he was active in the High Meadows Men's Golf association and served as co-chairman for the handicap committee. As a member of St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Sparta, he served as chairman of the Parish Council. For over fifty years, Dr. Mellow belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Legion in New York and continued to be active in the Sparta, NC Post of # 7034 as health prevailed. In lieu of flowers: Memorials may be made to the Alleghany Educational Foundation, C/O Lib Goodman, P.O. Box 38, Sparta, NC 28675 so that the Dr. Joseph A. Mellow scholarship may be established for a student entering the medical profession or to St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, Highland Dr., Sparta, NC 28675. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, Sparta, NC. Viewing at 9 a.m. and Mass of the Resurrection at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Antioch Methodist Church in Roaring Gap, immediately following the mass with Military Rites by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta is in charge of the Funeral Arrangements.
NICHOLS Mrs. Mexa Reeves Nichols, age 92, a resident of the Sunbridge of Alleghany, Sparta, NC, died Thursday morning, February 8, 2001, in Sunbridge. She was the widow of Robert L. Nichols. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: JoAnne and Jim Kaltreider of Charlotte, NC; and two grandchildren: Julia Jones of Charlotte, NC and Lisa Stoner of Kansas City, Mo. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, February 9, 2001, at 12:00 PM at the Shiloh Methodist Cemetery. Pastor Susan Sides will officiate. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. MOXLEY Mrs. Della Ruth Wagoner Moxley, age 87, of 159 Luther Street, Sparta, NC, died Wednesday, February 7, 2001, in the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. She was the widow of William Curtis Moxley. She is survived by four daughters: Lucille Williams of Laurel Springs, NC, Betty Perez of Sparta, NC, Wanda Frady of Conover, NC, and Barbara Hodge of Newton, NC; one son: Stoney Joe Moxley of Hickory, NC; 30 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, February 10, 2001, at 2:00 P.M. at the Shiloh United Methodist Church with Rev. Dean Adams officiating. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Methodist Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening, February 9, 2001, from 7-9 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
