VENEZUELA Ruth Thompson Venezuela, 88, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Well Spring Retirement Community in Greensboro, NC. Visitation will be from 11:00-11:30 Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Grandview Funeral Home and the graveside service immediately following at Sparta Cemetery in Sparta, North Carolina. Ruth was born in Sparta on July 23, 1912, the daughter of Robert V. "Bob" and Metta Joines Thompson. She had two brothers, Jack and Dan. She graduated from Glade Valley High School and attended Salem College in Winston-Salem, Appalachian University in Boone, and the Strayers Business College in Washington, D.C. for night school. Ruth married Robert Landreth, also an Alleghany County native and a graduate of Glade Valley High School. The young couple moved to Washington, D.C. when Robert was hired to work for Congressman R. L. Doughton. During the War years, Ruth accepted an important job as executive secretary and personal assistant to one of the directors of the Inter-American Defense Board. During these years, she continued night school studying foreign languages and became fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French. Years later, she mastered Turkish as well. During this period of employment, she received several letters of commendation for her outstanding performance. Shortly after the war, Ruth was widowed when her husband was killed in an industrial accident in Fredricksburg, Va. She became interested in investing her limited savings in the stock market and resigned from the Inter-American Defense Board for a position on Wall Street with Dean Witter. There she learned about the stock market first hand. She was always a keen student and soon became an astute investor, continuing to make conservative investments until the last years of her life. After two years on Wall Street, her desire to travel brought her back to Washington for the State Department. Her skills and abilities earned her many overseas assignments. During the years to follow, she was assigned tours of duty in Yugoslavia, Ghana, Belgium Congo, Turkey and Afghanistan. She was assigned short duties in most European countries and the Mid East. Where there was international trouble, there was Ruth, helping her country in many operations. After the years in Foreign Service satisfied her desire for travel, she took a job with the Department of Commerce and later with the IRS so she could stay in Washington. During this time, she married Juan S. Venezuela whom she had known in Afghanistan. Mr. Venezuela died in October 1985. Although she was a world traveler, she always looked forward to returning to North Carolina and Alleghany County to visit family and friends. She left the Washington area to live in an Elkin, NC, retirement home and later moved again to Greensboro to be closer to family. Ruth is survived by her brother: Dan of Laurel, Ms.; nieces Carol Combs of Oak Ridge, NC, Susan Nunley of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Dawn Thompson of Maitland, Fl; nephew Bob Thompson of Anchorage, AK; three great-nieces, one great-nephew and one great-great-niece.
