ARMENTROUT Mrs. Marjorie Choate Armentrout died August 31, 2001, at the Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Armentrout was born September 7, 1913, in Alleghany County to the late Tom and Lula Cheek Choate. She attended Mars Hill College, Stetson University, and Appalachian State University. She was a music teacher in Alleghany County until her retirement, and also taught private piano and organ lessons in her home. Mrs. Armentrout had devoted over 50 years to playing both the organ and piano at the First Baptist Church in Sparta where she was a member. She was a member of the Sparta Woman Club, the National Society DAR, the National Society Colonial Dames, the National Huguenot Society, Delta Kappa Gamma, the North Carolina Retired School Personnel Association, and the Alleghany Unit of Retired School Personnel. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Norma Richardson and Max and Judy Armentrout; two grandchildren, Debbie Richardson and Tommy Richardson; and one great-granddaughter, Tiffany Richardson. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sparta. Interment will follow at the Sparta Cemetery. The body will be placed in the Church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday night at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home. MONTGOMERY Mrs. Josephine Wagoner Montgomery, age 81, of 413 Carson Creek Rd., Low Gap, N.C., died Monday morning, Aug. 27, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Abie Montgomery. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Buddy Robinson of Galax, Va., and Helen and Dennis Flippen of Low Gap, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law; Loyd (Buck) and Drema Montgomery, and Johnny and Debbie Montgomery, all of Ennice, N.C.; four sisters, Vella Wiles of N. Wilkesboro, Blanche Reeves of Galax, Sadie Wagoner of Galax, and Hazel Jones of High Point, N.C., two brothers, John Wagoner of Galax, and Jim Wagoner of Low Gap; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Galyean Cemetery in Baywood, Va. BUGIELSKI Mrs. Mary Ann Triplett Bugielski, age 54, of 138 Atwood Street, Sparta, NC, died Sunday, August 19th, at her home. She was the widow of Tony Bugielski. She is survived by one daughter: Sabrina Arnold of Sparta, NC; two sons and a daughter-in-law: Jeff Bugielski of Belmont, NC, Jimmy and Robin Bugielski of Sparta; three grandchildren: Chad Bugielski, Leah Bugielski and Brianna Arnold; one brother and sister-in-law: Michael and Debbie Hudson of Sparta, NC; special nieces and a nephew: Wendy, Amy and Alan Hudson all of Sparta, NC; step-father: Arthur Hudson of Sparta, NC; and a special caregiver: Tonya Andrews of Sparta, NC. COX Mrs. Kate Caudill Cox, age 86, of 898 Vox Road, Sparta, NC, died Thursday, August 16th, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Carl Cox. SPURLIN Mrs. Matilda Mae Brannock Spurlin, age 90, of the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Independence, Va., formerly of Sparta, died Tuesday evening, August 14 at the Center. She was the widow of Lonnie Spurlin. She was preceded in death by two sons. She is survived by one daughter: Helen Winesett of Winter Garden, Fla.; three sons and a daughter-in-law: Clifton Spurlin of King, NC, Golden Spurlin of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Luther and Pam Spurlin of Ennice, N.C.; one granddaughter: Angela Surguine of Clermont, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren: Holly Surguine, Mandy Surguine, and Justin Surguine, all of Clermont, Fla. DUNCAN Mrs. Emily Logan Duncan, age 93, of 3950 Brinton Place, Charlotte, NC, died Sunday morning, August 5th, in the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. She was the widow of Dean F. Duncan. She is survived by two sons: Hugh M. Duncan of Charlotte, NC and Dean F. Duncan, Jr. of Mt. Holly, NC; one daughter: Harriett Duncan of Warsaw, NC; one brother: Charles O. Logan of Boyton Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. WOODRUFF Mr. Paul Woodruff, age 88, of 394 Camp Butler Rd., Glade Valley, N.C., died Saturday morning, August 4th at the Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. Mr. Woodruff was born in Alleghany County, May 16, 1913, the youngest of nine children born to James Frank and Olivia Cockerham Woodruff. He was of the Baptist faith. LANDRETH Mr. John Basil Landreth, age 81, of 718 Independence, Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Friday evening, August 2nd, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. Mr. Landreth was born November 23, 1919, to James Lonnie and Lula Irwin Landreth in Alleghany County. He graduated from Piney Creek High School in 1937. He served four years in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a well-known barber in Sparta for 50 years. He was a member of the Sparta Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and elder and was a member of the choir. He is survived by his wife: Lois Reeves Landreth of the home; one son and daughter-in-law: John Mitchell and Jane Landreth of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law: Jane and Alan Wyatt of Sparta and Julie and Curtis Duncan of Sparta; five grandchildren: Thomas Landreth, Mitchell and Elizabeth Wyatt, and Hannah and Rebecca Duncan; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Bill and Betty Landreth of N. Wilkesboro and Lon Max and Dixie Landreth of Concord, N.C.; and one sister and brother-in-law: Laurene and Charles Warden of Newark, Delaware.
